- Hey, FloridaArmy, question. A bunch of her plays note them being "all-colored" ones, ie all African-Americans, along with all the book sources you already had in the references that were about African American film history. Hence why I had that descriptor in the article's lede sentence for her at one point. But I removed it when I found the picture above because I was unsure if that was accurate and whether I was reading into something or not. Should I be listing her as African-American? - User:Silver seren all the sources and acting roles say yes. Looking at a photo of the Griffin Sisters they are also light skinned. Micheaux cast light skinned actors. I don't think a white woman could have been in colored productions at that time. See also Draft:Coon Town Suffragettes. FloridaArmy (talk) 09:09, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- FloridaArmy: Okay, I'll make sure to add that in. I also think there's an original name for her we're definitely missing. Since Mattie Edwards was her stage name (and probably only made after she married John Edwards?), so there must be a birth name prior to that. And she may have even done earlier theater roles under that name. Not sure how to find out what it was though. SilverserenC 20:25, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- Martha Mattie Settle? FloridaArmy (talk) 00:41, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- No, she got that name after marrying Edward Settle, which she did after (presumably) divorcing John Edwards. Since she had the Settle last name when she died. Also, it doesn't help that everyone here has too many names in common. :P But I would expect that Martha, at least, was her birth name. It's just the original last name we don't know.
