Edgard Varese Professor[edit]

Feldman became the Edgard Varese Professor at the University at Buffalo. Prior to that time, Feldman had earned his living as a full time employee at the family textile business in New York's garment district.

Would someone care to explain this title? I know what a professor is, and who Edgard Varese was, but what on earth is an Edgard Varese Professor? Giamberardino 00:56, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is probably an endowed chair. Someone gives a heap of cash to the school, and the interest from the investment of said cash (usually along with some of the school's own money) is used to establish a professorship, or at least give a nice raise to a professor. The donor then gets to name the professorship after himself (The Hubert R. Moneybags Chair in Sociology), or his no-good kid, or Pepsi-Cola, or whoever else he likes (such as Varese). 64.4.98.244 23:03, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Arguing with his teachers[edit]

Feldman studied ... composition with Wallingford Riegger and Stefan Wolpe. He did not agree with many of the views of these composition teachers, and he spent much of his time simply arguing with them.

From the book "Soundpieces: Interviews With American Composers" (by Cole Gagne and Tracy Caras; Metuchen, N.J. & London: Scarecrow Press, 1982) :

Q: All we've been able to read about your studies with Stefan Wolpe was that the two of you argued all the time.

FELDMAN: I'm very sorry about that: Stefan was hurt when he read that. We talked a lot - that's about all I really meant.

Partial list?[edit]

The partial list of works is getting longer, and none of the titles are formatted correctly. In addition, we have an unreferenced list of "notable" works. What makes them notable, and who said so? The user was blocked by an admin. Eventually, the block expired and now they are back and making the same edit again. I requested a new block at [1]; a new block is now in effect. SethTisue (talk) 05:44, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I removed this gentlemen's name from the section header as it was coming up in search engines (Yahoo specifically) under his name, and he phoned the Wikimedia office to complain. I did explain to him that we (the Wikimedia Foundation) have nothing to do with content. The name is available in the page history, but should not be spidered any longer. Wonderful article, but needs citations[edit]

This is perhaps the best article I've ever read on Wikipedia. It's clean, well-written, concise, and each paragraph is contained within itself, starting with a relevant and clear topic sentence and containing only facts that add to/clarify/further the topic and the article in general; the list of works is clean and organized. I've read a lot about Mr. Feldman, and I'm pretty sure the entire article is factually correct, and it contains no opinions. However, because this is Wikipedia, each fact needs to be cited, especially quotes and statements about musical style. There's a list of reading from which I assume the author(s) got his information, so perhaps the same person(s) could put page citations?

Under Cage's influence?[edit]

I think this is a little misleading, implying some kind of hierarchy between the two that i dont believe existed.

The article says "he met painters Richard Lippold (who had a studio next door), Sonia Sekula." Richard Lippold was a sculptor not a painter (and is accurately described as a sculptor in the Wikipedia article on Richard Lippold). The text should be revised to read:

Well, actually it's only just over four years since the article was protected (in November 2010) because an editor using various IP addresses in Portland Oregon was repeatedly and persistently adding a non-notable name to the article.
