Why changed name from Tucker to Visitor

[edit]

How come Nana Visitor was born as Nana Tucker - when / why did she change her name? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Belomulo (talkcontribs) 09:59, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Excellent question, and answering 7 years later to a long departed single edit editor but for the benefit of all; she adopted the surname "Visitor" early on in her acting career. The name comes from her mother's side. This has now (finally) be added to the article. --Hammersoft (talk) 17:17, 18 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Still doesn’t say why... is that info available? Was there already another Nana Tucker? Did she want a distinctive name?
NB:I thought it was (recently) coined but Google says there are “lots” of Visitors in Scotland and Bolivia.

Out of curiosity, where in the article is the adoption of the "Visitor" name mentioned?

I can't find it.

And still, no mention of why the name change.

Just curious. 2600:8800:785:9400:C23F:D5FF:FEC4:D51D (talk) 06:20, 23 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also, incidentally, she apparently pronounces it visiTOR. I was at a Trek convention years ago and Avery Brooks was talking about her and pronounced it the way. Alexandermoir (talk) 05:57, 8 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Picture

[edit]

As the article is about the actress and not a DS9 character, it would be nice to have a picture of her without the prosthesis/make-up. --Clay Collier 06:35, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Should these sentences be split?

[edit]

"She is claustrophobic. During the filming of the DS9 episode "Second Skin," Nana struggled terribly with the rubber make-up her character, Kira Nerys, had to wear."

I don't think claustrophobia would give you emotional feelings/problems about wearing prosthetic makeup. Claustrophobia is a fear of closed spaces, and it isn't like she was encased in concrete or locked in a crate or box or something. Thoughts, anyone? SmUX 18:40, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A feeling of not being able to breathe is also associated with claustrophobia, and wearing heavy makeup and prosthetics blocks the pores, which often gives one the feeling of being suffocated.

Her mother?

[edit]

Wasn't her mother a famous dancer who worked with Fosse?

Not to pick a nit, but I think it would be more accurate to say Nana Visitor was the one wearing make-up, not her character. If I recall the plot involved Kira being surgically altered to appear Cardasian, and attempting to convince her that she was Cardasian. If the character had been wearing make-up it would be hard to convince her of this. --202.168.39.41 (talk) 23:14, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification of Kira's rank

[edit]
From 1993-99, Visitor appeared on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as Major (later Colonel, and eventually, Commander) Kira Nerys

The character was never officially given the field title of Commander as that is a Starfleet rank. She was given a starfleet uniform and the title of commander when she and Odo joined the Cardassian terrorist cells to fight the Dominion occupation of Cardassia. This was done because Sisko felt her Bajoran rank and uniform might be counterproductive in working with the Cardassians, since it was the Bajoran resistance who kicked them off Bajor seven years prior. When the Dominion was defeated, she returned to the Bajorn rank of Colonel, continuing to serve on DS-9.

It was presumably made official by the end of the series finale, after Sisko had departed to be with the Prophets, and she was made the station commander. As I recall, she still had the Starfleet uniform on. Nightscream (talk) 17:31, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rape

[edit]

In this podcast, at 31:45, she discusses how she was attacked and raped. It's pretty horrific but it might be worth including. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-106-nana-visitor-pt-1/id1566636928?i=1000525701263 Serendipodous 23:57, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
