Include women under "Notable members" as it is no longer a men's organization. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.247.141.154 (talk) 22:47, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

How authentic is this article? As for notable members are they actually members and what makes them notable? There is at least one person who I don't think anyone even knows who it is. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.202.244.250 (talk) 14:51, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
Citations needed for members
[edit]All members listed should have verifiable sources demonstrating that they are or have been members and, if they have no associated article, that they are notable. Fæ (talk) 21:27, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
"Catholic" club
[edit]The NYAC's membership leans significantly toward Catholics, and many prominent church figures including Cardinal Dolan are members. Should anything be said about this topic in the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.125.172.194 (talk) 17:38, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
Restrictions against Jews and Blacks
[edit]As of 6/25/14, at least half the NYAC entry is devoted to restrictions against blacks and Jews in the membership. This is ridiculous and the page no longer serves its purpose. Initially I am going to move these to the bottom but suggest they would be better served as a separate article entirely. Currently looks like someone with a vendetta against the club is trying to gate crash the page. 155.201.34.51 (talk) 18:58, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
The first sentence of this section currently says: "From its establishment in 1868, the NYAC barred Jews from becoming members through a restriction in its constitution." However, none of the sources actually state this to be the case, suggesting it is factually incorrect. Whoever posted this stuff please check the facts and update the references. I intend to delete statements which are not supported by fact. 155.201.34.51 (talk) 19:13, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
- It all is properly sourced, to high-level RSs, but I agree that we need to bulk up the rest of the history (which is where it belongs) with other stuff to address your point about the percentage treatment. I'll look to find more material for that section for balance over the next week or so, but can't see moving or deleting what is there. The provision you point to is RS-supported (e.g, see here). --Epeefleche (talk) 23:41, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
The reference you are citing states the following: "many social and athletic clubs like the New York Athletic Club and the Jockey Club barred [wealthy Jews] from membership through restrictions on their constitutions, by blackballing applicants, or common consent." That does not support your contention that "the NYAC barred Jews from becoming members through a restriction in its constitution". Please amend the statement or cite a reference which supports it. 72.229.20.132 (talk) 13:57, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
As noted above, there are a number of unsubstantiated claims in this section. Despite me pointing this out, the contributor has not removed or edited them and my reasonable edits have been undone. I have now removed/edited certain content including the following statements which were clear examples (i.e. none of the references specifically supported them): "From its establishment in 1868, the NYAC barred Jews from becoming members, through a restriction in its constitution. Through at least the early 1970s, the NYAC had membership restrictions against blacks and Jews." 155.201.35.153 (talk) 19:55, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
- As noted above, you should not remove text that is properly sourced, to high-level RSs. And as indicated above, I agree that we need to bulk up the rest of the history section (which is where it belongs--obviously, this is part of the history of the club ... no need to hide it by moving it down away from the history) with other stuff to address your point about the percentage treatment. I started to look to address that, and began expanding the history, but was distracted by travel and other matters. Much, much more needs to be done. But please take this as a caution not to delete RS-supported text. Epeefleche (talk) 20:52, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
As I have noted several times above, and to which you have still not specifically responded, many of the statements which were in the section were NOT properly sourced (e.g. "the NYAC had membership restrictions against blacks and Jews"). I believe the section, as I have updated it, includes content which is both fully sourced and relevant. 155.201.35.153 (talk) 19:13, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
- Hello Mr. IP. See my comments above. I'll fix improper deletions when I have a chance, if you don't avail yourself of the opportunity. See also my comments re section placement. And see also my comments re: a) expanding history on other aspects (I see you've only added more history of restrictions .. vis-a-vis women), and on referencing the unreferenced material (which should be done per wp:v; otherwise, such material is subject to deletion). Epeefleche (talk) 19:38, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
Epeefleche - I would like to challenge you on the header wording you keep reverting to: "Admissions restrictions against Jews, Blacks, and Women". The NYAC used to have admissions restrictions against Women and I have added text describing that. However, none of the references you cite substantiate that there were ever admissions or membership restrictions in place against Blacks or Jews. Indeed, they are mostly just points of view (e.g. a Woody Allen joke) which may or may not be based on fact. As a result, the wording for the header you keep reverting to is making an unsupported political point and is entirely unnecessary. Please add specific references in the section which substantiate that there were once "restrictions" on the "admission of blacks and jews", otherwise we should revert the header to what I had previously "Contentions over admissions" or something similar. 155.201.35.153 (talk) 16:39, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
Epeefleche - I am going to revert the title as I have described above. You have still not specifically addressed any of my talk posts and have ignored the last one. as such, I hope you will refrain from undoing my edits to this site. 155.201.34.51 (talk) 18:27, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
Could links be provided to the various versions of the Club constitutions? It should be easy enough to settle what it says. 2A00:23C3:E284:900:25B9:611:9D20:EEA8 (talk) 18:46, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
Mercury Cup series
[edit]Can someone reference this wholly unreferenced section? Tx. --Epeefleche (talk) 23:43, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
- It should just be removed.

[edit]Post 754, on the 12th floor. Despite the number, one of the oldest, with an historic connection to the NYAC. Worth a mention? 2A00:23C3:E284:900:25B9:611:9D20:EEA8 (talk) 18:49, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
Removal of Presidents category
[edit]Is that removal of that section okay? Just because it may not be public info doesn't mean it should be blanked? I do not know if I'm right here. What do you guys think?

Proposal to remove Mercury Cup section
[edit]The Mercury Cup section makes no sense. No other sport at NYAC has a section for every single in-house tournament. (The Mercury Cups were a tiny competition; there is no need to catalogue the results outside of [1]AskFRED.)
Are we to expect the Fall Classic squash tournament to be included as a section as well? What about the results of the Athlete's Fund golf tournament? It makes absolutely no sense to have this irrelevant (and outdated) section. 2603:7000:3AF0:8450:C145:919:AA8E:E024 (talk) 22:40, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
