Spelling

[edit]

Well, both spellings of his last name are obviously correct. Can we find a source where he talks about it? --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 20:32, 21 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

sorry, please send exact email location for me to send documentation of name change. thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eeluby (talkcontribs) 14:50, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sending emailed primary source documentation isn't suitable for sourcing an article. Independently published reliable, secondary sources are what we need. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 15:38, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Article name

[edit]

I have moved the page back to Paul Schoenfield, the spelling used by the bolk of sources on the subject. The UMich faculty page does spell his name Paul Schoenfeld and I'm not sure if that is a misspelling or a change of name. Best to discuss that here, and if needed, propose a move request. See also this. Abecedare (talk) 20:36, 21 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Paul SchoenfieldPaul Schoenfeld – Current UMich website lists him as Schoenfeld. https://smtd.umich.edu/about/faculty-profiles/paul-schoenfeld/. Pulitzer website lists him as "Paul Schoenfeld". http://www.pulitzer.org/finalists/paul-schoenfeld Let's go with the current information instead of the outdated info. • Comment: I'm really not sure about this. I looked at recordings of his music currently listed by the dealer Presto Classical, and of the 41 listed I think I counted 17 where his name can be seen on the CD cover spelt "Schoenfield" and none spelt "Schoenfeld". (On the others his name is not visible on the cover.) It would be useful to see some primary source for this, but he doesn't seem to have a website as far as I can tell. --Deskford (talk) 09:24, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Update: he appears to have had a website at www.paulschoenfield.com (archive), which expired in 2010. It looks like it was maintained by a third party, though, so not a definitive confirmation of his own preferred spelling. --Deskford (talk) 09:52, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There's an IP edit in 2013 that claims that the spelling had changed, so that narrows down the time frame a bit. See also http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n85091671.html - listed as Schoenfield, but with Schoenfeld as an official variant.--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 15:03, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Further addition/confusion about the name-change timeline: the Jury report for the 2003 Pulitzer prize uses both spellings, Schoenfeld (pg 254) and Schoenfield (pg 255). Abecedare (talk) 15:52, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Two more time-points:
  • This 2014 MPR Interview, whose accompanying article spells the name with "ie"
  • This 2015 thesis which consistently uses the "e" spelling
I'm highlighting these two sources, since they both involve personal interaction with the subject and (presumably) reflect his spelling preference at that time, although I suspect we may just be reading tea-leaves abut the latter. Abecedare (talk) 16:18, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak oppose for now. Based on search for sources and above discussion, I believe the "ie" spelling is much more prevalent possibly because it was in use during most of the time the subject was professionally active. It is clear that the "e" spelling is also in use, and likely represents a recent change. However following the precedence of Cat Stevens, Rajneesh etc, I mildly prefer the first spelling for the article title. Can be easily convinced otherwise if definitive secondary sources about the name change or the subject's preference become available. Abecedare (talk) 16:18, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think I concur with your preference to leave the article at the "ie" spelling, at least for now, as this is the spelling by which he is known, and WP:COMMONNAME applies. This is more complicated than I initially realised though! --Deskford (talk) 16:39, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
