revival?

[edit]

Why are they called jazz revival and not just jazz? --61.41.222.175 06:52, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Because they were one of a number of bands who, in the early 1980s, started re-popularising jazz/jazz-influenced music when it was not necessarily popular before. Of course, this also makes them jazz, but jazz revival is a more specific and descriptive term. It is like the difference between calling a band "rock" or calling them "classic rock". Lifted verbatim?

[edit]

Most of the text of this page is lifted straight from the "Dr Heckle and Mr Jive' album sleeve. Should it not be rewritten and the source attributed?

  • I wrote most of the text of this article, and i have never read that album sleeve, but that said i dont remember how much of what i wrote was based on text that was already here. I made a mental note to clean this article up a while back, its no longer up to scratch, it will be taken care of in the next couple of weeks (when i'm less busy), unless anyone else takes it for a spin first, which would be great (though unlikely, as I don't imagine this article gets much traffic). Jdcooper 13:14, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the whole article suffers from POV, and is not written to an encyclopedic style. I added {{POV}} and {{Wiki}} tags to the main article accordingly.

I've removed the {{Wiki}} - seems like there's plenty of links. Wwwhatsup (talk) 22:46, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Also could someone remove the British slang, phrases such as "he took a runner" make little sense in the rest of the world.24.165.188.30 (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 00:20, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've replaced it with 'absconded' I hope that's clearer. Wwwhatsup (talk) 22:46, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jazz vs Ska?

[edit]

I'd say, that Pigbag is ska, and in my expierience, their music is generally considered ska. I can see why someone can hear jazz elements in the music, but the foundation is clearly two-tone ska.

  • I'd say it is far more funk than either of those things. I've been gearing up for a rewrite of this article for aaaages, I will look for some sources supporting any of these labels when i do. Jdcooper (talk) 19:36, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd agree and say that they were neither Jazz nor ska, although they had elements of jazz. I have a reference that describes them "Revelling in classic brass-led soul/funk yet retaining a residue of edgy paranioa from The Pop Group". It also mentions Latin influences and "the bass groove/jerky jazz workouts of 'Brian The Snail'". Another source describes 'Brand new Pigbag' as "funk/soul". Let me know if these will be useful if/when you come to work on the article.--Michig (talk) 19:58, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's not even *nearly* ska: no off-beat, no swing, no nuffink. Have a look at Madness's version on Youtube, credited to The Dangermen: THAT's a ska version. Pollythewasp (talk) 09:16, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hamlyn/Hamlin

[edit]

It is not altogether clear which of these spellings is correct. Even the fansite, while mostly using 'Hamlyn' notes at one point that it "might be spelt Hamlin". Furthermore, most biographies of the band on the internet seem to be versions of the same text, and its impossible to say a) where the text originated and thus b) whether that text was right. I favour leaving it as 'Hamlyn', since that is how its spelt in the vast majority of places (235 google hits vs. 4 for 'hamlin') though as I said, that's doesn't necessarily entail accuracy. Claudia Fragapane usage?

[edit]

so, there was a claim that Claudia Fragapane used the track:

British gymnast [[Claudia Fragapane]] used a remix for her floor music between 2015-2016 including the 2016 Summer Olympics.<ref>Newspaper article ([https://www.thesun.co.uk/archives/sport/150439/clauds-a-leapin-gymnastics-star-claudia-fragapane-aiming-to-be-team-gbs-history-girl/ link])</ref>

I'd love to have this in - trouble is, I went looking and The Sun - a deprecated source, that shouldn't be used for pretty much anything at Wikipedia - is the only place I can find this claim. It's not in any Reliable Source, it doesn't seem to even be in blogs etc.

and it being listed on Claudia Fragapane without evidence doesn't count as evidence to put it here - in fact, because that's a WP:BLP, technically it should be removed as uncited from there too.

Is there anywhere else, at all, listing this claim? ping C21bohemia - David Gerard (talk) 10:54, 1 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

David having said that, I was under the impression the original entry was talking about The Sun newspaper article itself which would not need a reference (unto itself as it were.) Separately by the way, here's more evidence "which can't be used!" although the evidence is building - 0.33 secs into this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FW3eDQoRNko C21bohemia 11:56 3 February 2020 — Preceding unsigned comment added by C21bohemia (talkcontribs) 11:57, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Sun article mentions it in passing - if the Sun wasn't an unusable source, then that'd probably be fine - David Gerard (talk) 13:09, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
