Surname
[edit]Some references (e.g. "Betts") give his surname as Macauley. --Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 16:58, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Change of Information with Citation
[edit]I have revamped the final paragraph on his business activities in place of existing information by Betts, in favour of information cited to Keith Warsop The Early FA Cup Finals and the Southern Amateurs (2004) as being more detailed, and as a book source two years older than Betts. At same time I also added other information quoted from Warsop about his footballing activities.Cloptonson (talk) 21:36, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
I have also changed existing statement he "scored the only goal" of the 1882 FA Cup Final to contributing to that goal, also cited to Warsop's work. In three sports journals' match reports, the direct goal is credited to William Joseph Anderson, accepted by Warsop, who comments that in tributes to Macaulay in The Times at time of his death (1937), the latter liked to recall that he outpaced the Blackburn players and helped towards the goal. Warsop considers the sequence of passing from Macaulay to Arthur Dunn to Anderson is the most likely one.Cloptonson (talk) 20:40, 6 July 2012 (UTC) I notice the existing article bears a cited report (to an unnamed periodical) that Macaulay "steered the ball between the Blackburn goal posts". I will not delete it but bring in Warsop's information in support of my statement when time permits me to edit. Contradictory reports of play were not unknown in pre-tv days, and the narrative could be influenced by where the reporter literally stood when he viewed play.Cloptonson (talk) 09:53, 7 July 2012 (UTC) I notice the questionable report is quoted in support of naming Macaulay as the scorer in the article on that Cup Final itself. I will bring the added information in when time permits.Cloptonson (talk) 08:53, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
