The $ sign in $alz
[edit]Someone asked why I spell (I still do) my name with a dollarsign. It started in 7th grade, when my friends and I were looking for ways to "customize" the programs we wrote for PDP-8/e EDU-25 basic. We read an article that said only the first few letters of the statement counted, so we started doing things like
10 REMarkable program by Rich $alz
and I just stuck with it as my "signature" and a way to get remembered. It worked :) Hope this helps. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:4878:8000:90:a8af:3dc:856f:ba30 (talk • contribs)
sharutils?
[edit]Schily appears to have some objection to my comment (from measurements of usenet postings) regarding Rich Salz, stating that it's self-promotional. On the page, I took care to note my involvement, that in fact I was a minor participant in the events described. Some clarification of the term "self-promotional" might be useful here. To see this in a fuller context, see Schily's edits in Talk:Make (software) TEDickey (talk) 16:46, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
Activist?
[edit]There's no clue in the topic for the "activist" category. TEDickey (talk) 07:54, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
- From the article:
- "was an early contributor to the free software movement. In 1986 he replaced John P. Nelson as editor of the original "moderated" Usenet group for free source code, mod.sources[6] (later renamed to comp.sources.unix[7])."[1]
- Activism in support of free software. Please improve the text to make this even clearer, or add new or alternative categories. — Lentower (talk) 13:54, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
- I don't think that's the same as "activist", which "connotes a peaceful form of conflict". I think the article should report he's a computer programmer and engineer and leave it at that. Msnicki (talk) 15:01, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
