The reasons. - This flag is not just for Imperial Japanese Navy. The other political organizations used this flag and also sometimes the army. This is kind of misleading and not wholesome. - The official Japanese name states that this is "rising sun" Kyokujitsu-ki (the sun-with rays-flag). Kyokujitsu also was part of the name of the Order of the Rising Sun order.

Therefore I think this should be moved more approppriately to the Rising sun flag Onetwo1 02:59, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, on account of the fact that 旭日旗 does in fact mean "Rising Sun Flag", I could take it or leave it. It's not an unofficial name, nor (to my surprise) a Western-derived name, but actually the common official name in Japan. That said, I'm perfectly indifferent towards leaving it how it is. On a whim, I did a Google search: "Ensign of the Imperial Japanese Navy" -wikipedia.org -answers.com yields 104 results, and "Rising Sun Flag" -wikipedia.org -answers.com yields 16,200 results. So, it appears the other phrase is more common. I'm fine either way. The article may need to be refactored, though, so it doesn't focus on the Imperial Navy usage. ···日本穣^{? · Talk to Nihonjoe} 03:15, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This article has been renamed from Ensign of the Imperial Japanese Navy to Rising sun flag as the result of a move request. --Stemonitis 10:28, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Further history

The last sentence of the article is:

When Japan was defeated in August 1945, the flag was banned by Allied Occupation authorities.

But an image caption says the ensign was used again starting in 1954. Can we add another line or two about the post-1945 history? -Will Beback · † · 04:17, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Naming

I know we just went through a move request, and I apologize for not bringing this up at the time, but as we're agreed that "Rising Sun Flag" is the formal name of this banner, should it not be capitalized? Union Jack and Star-Spangled Banner are usually (if not always) represented in title case. LordAmeth 19:42, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
