Nationality

[edit]

Yeah we can all press the revert button, care to explain why? Is scottish a legal nationality? No. Tim! (talk) 23:04, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That is how Scottish people are referred to in articles on WP. It is also how Rob describes himself. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 23:07, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Scotland is a nation, hence Scottish is a nationality. What on earth has "legal" got to do with it?--Mais oui! 03:25, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He'll have a United Kingdom passport... ;) Anyway Mais oui! I saw on WP:AN/I that you are arguing for consistency, which is good, so if you say Scottish I'll stick with Scottish, and on the English ones we'll have English. Tim! (talk) 10:07, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Received loud and clear. Over and out. :) --Mais oui! 11:45, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Role of Durza in Eragon Film Adaptation

[edit]

Shouldn't this be added to the career section? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.95.112.28 (talk) 12:21, 8 February 2010 (UTC) HarshArunJoshi 17:34, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Doctor Who

Anyone going to mention Doctor who rumours? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.21.158.193 (talk) 16:29, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Possible vandalism

[edit]

This post on another forum indicates that this edit might have been made as part of a "Wikipedia vandalization" contest. The IP responsible for the edit has a long history of vandalism and was blocked for 3 months shortly after the edit was made. I have therefore reverted the edit. If it was in fact made in good faith, it should be possible to supply a reliable source to support it.

The picture displays with text artefacts that do not appear in the source. I do not know what is the reason for this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.96.0.153 (talk) 22:37, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Portrait picture works fine now. I still remove it because its informational gain is negligible - it shows only the head, and he is wearing large sunglasses so that one is unable to identify his face. --85.182.82.188 (talk) 22:20, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

BAFTA win

[edit]

Shouldn't there be some mention of his BAFTA win in the text, rather than just the link in the infobox at the bottom - what did he win it for? The Full Monty? Hamish Macbeth? Inquiring minds want to know these things... :) Grutness...wha? 22:06, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Profile pic

[edit]

I strongly think that the current pic of him taken in 2011 should be the current picture. It's by far the best picture of Carlyle available for us to use in terms of him looking straight at the camera with nothing obscuring him.

I'm not sure what exactly the rule is for showing an actor in costume but the one for Charlie Chaplin shows Chaplin as his "Tramp" character, and in this case, it's just Carlyle wearing a suit and nothing outlandish or covered in Rumpelstiltskin's makeup. --CyberGhostface (talk) 02:05, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding is that the rules are different for actors who living from those who have passed away and that living ones are not to have pics from a specific role in the infobox. I have started a thread here Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Actors and Filmmakers#Looking for an answer to get some clarification on this. If you know of any other project talk pages where assistance could come from please feel free to post there as well. MarnetteD | Talk 04:23, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, I'll wait until we get further response. --CyberGhostface (talk) 04:48, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The main reason for excluding photos of characters is that these are almost always copyrighted, and the rationale is that a living person should be accessible enough for someone to capture a photograph and freely license it. In the case of people who have died, we have to rely on the extant collection of images, in which case there may not be one with an acceptable license, and we have to use a copyrighted picture with a Fair Use Rationale that explains the need to use a non-free image. In this particular case, it has been pointed out that Carlyle is more recognizable in the 2011 image, and while he may be "in costume" and on location as a character in a show, he is not wearing makeup or prosthetics which obscure his identity, and the image is licensed under a Creative Commons license that permits us to use it freely without concern of fair use. I would favor it as well. Elizium23 (talk) 06:13, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for the explanation. I think it clears things up a lot. Technically he is in "makeup" as the purple eye shadow attests to but I don't think that overturns your main points. CyberGhostface I went ahead and restored your pic - my apologies for not letting you do this but I did not know how long it would be before you would be editing again. Also, I am not trying to stop the discussion, if other editors have more input please feel free to add it. MarnetteD | Talk 15:27, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No problem and thanks. :) --CyberGhostface (talk) 16:15, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Stargate role

[edit]

Just wondering, how come his role in Stargate keeps getting removed from the opening lede? I've never watched the show but I imagine it's a fairly significant role for his career having lasted 40 episodes.--CyberGhostface (talk) 20:14, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For me it is a WP:NOTABILITY problem. That series had a loyal fan following but was never in the top 100 (or even 200 from what I can find) watched television shows. As far as his career is concerned it was more of a steady income for two years than a significant role. I just don;t think that many readers will be aware of the series and as we move farther away from its run that situation will grow - but this is just one editors opinion. I think a mention of this role would be better served in the article and I thought there was one but now I see there isn't so if you want to restore it to the lede plz feel free to do so. If you want to see one of his edgiest roles track down a copy of Ravenous and then go to the opposite end of the scale by watching an episode of Hamish Macbeth (TV series). These show just how versatile he is and why he is always fun to watch. MarnetteD | Talk 21:51, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for explaining. I've only watched Trainspotting, 28 Weeks later and Once Upon a Time so I wasn't aware how significant it was. I'll take a look at those recommendations, thanks.--CyberGhostface (talk) 22:37, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's not a notability problem at all, nor should it be. Noting that the mention is currently in the lede, is should absolutely stay in the lede. Notability isn't just about how popular a thing is amongst the general population. It also applies to WHY anyone might be looking up the title of any article in the first place. Robert Carlyle was the STAR of Stargate Universe, therefore this fact would be notable enough amongst anyone that watched even one of the 40 total episodes of that show to Google his name to see what else he's been in. The purpose of the lede isn't solely about proving notability of an article's existence. It is also to educate readers about various reasons the subject matter would be of interest to any reader. If Stargate were left out of this lede anyone coming here due to watching Stargate and Carlyle being the STAR of the show, would be justifiably baffled as to why this obvious fact isn't mentioned until deep into the article. IF Carlyle had starred in dozens of shows and/or movies more notable than Stargate exclusion from the lede might be justified. In Carlyle's case excluding it is certainly not justified. 73.69.251.97 (talk) 22:40, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Needs tidying up

[edit]

This does read a bit like a hand-out for an audition. It could do with re-writing in plain English. We still have two 'high profiles' close to each other when neither is really necessary. Other changes might make it a better read. Cannonmc (talk) 02:13, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The lead

[edit]

Per WP:LEAD the info there should be a summary of the article. It is not meant to be a long list of the film and TV shows that he has appeared in. It is a fact that it could be improved but just adding in a film that one editor enjoys (as is currently being done) does not do that. MarnetteD|Talk 22:24, 28 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"The Last of us" involvement.

[edit]

Mhodge23 (talk) 01:42, 24 April 2016 (UTC) I can find no credible source to substantiate Robert Carlyle's involvement in this production. All my searches lead back to [1] which appears to be nothing more than fiction.[reply]
