discussion[edit]

The following link is a Marine Corps historical account of the battle of Iwo Jima: http://www.nps.gov/archive/wapa/indepth/extContent/usmc/pcn-190-003131-00/sec3a.htm It says Galer was in the Iwo Jima landing: "Farther east, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Galer, the other Guadalcanal Medal of Honor Marine (and one of the Pacific War's earliest fighter aces), survived the afternoon's fusillade along the beaches and began reassembling his scattered radar unit in a deep shell hole near the base of Suribachi."

Another article on military.com says: "Afterward, Marine Corps officials grounded him because they did not want to risk the life of a Medal of Honor recipient. Galer then trained spotters who worked with ground units to help Marine pilots find targets, participating in three D-day landings in the Pacific at Iwo Jima , Luzon and Okinawa." http://www.military.com/NewContent/0,13190,MoH_Robert_Galer,00.html

Galer's obituary has this quote about Guadalcanal: "Mr. Galer was shot down three times in the battle for Guadalcanal. In a USMC interview, he recounted one of the times he was shot down. "I pancaked into the water near Florida Island, a small bit off the Solomons some 25 or 30 miles from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. It took me an hour and a half to swim ashore, which gave me plenty of time to do some worrying ... about the tide turning before I made it, or about man-eating sharks and poisonous stingrays which infested the waters." http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/obituaries/2002354271_galerobit01m.html 72.219.225.123 (talk) 02:22, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Navy Cross[edit]

A widely published photo shows Galer receiving the Navy Cross on Guadalcanal with John L. Smith and Marion Carl. Recently I learned from the USMC History Division that Bob's Navy Cross was upgraded to the Medal of Honor in February 1943, which explains why his official bio does not show the NC.
