In your introduction, Wikipedia, you state that my great grandfather was best remembered for "having devised" the Plimsoll line. This is a common myth. The honour of coming up with the idea of the line must go to James Hall of Newcastle. My great grandfather was the Member of Parliament who was so appalled by the number of ships being lost, the state of many of them, the treatment of sailors and their families, that he began to campaign for reform and eventually after a great deal of agitation got the relevant legislation onto the statute books. This of course was no mean feat, and one of which I, and indeed all of my family, are very proud. By the way, in the process he very nearly brought down Gladstone's government! Nicolette Jones has recently published a very readable biography of Plimsoll, which I can recommend, although if I may correct one tiny error of hers - she refers to my grandfather as "Professor J H Rose" when he was actually "H J".
