Where is the 'line' between The Spaceship Company and Scaled Composites?
[edit]Does anyone know, and more importantly, have a good verifiable source, just where the line is between TSC and SC? It is not clear in the article. The article states (2009-10-06) that TSC is a "manufacturing company ... which will own the technology created by Scaled for Virgin Galactic's Virgin SpaceShip program." Okay, so is it the manufacturer of WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo? (Most the articles I see seem to claim Scaled is building these, or at least, Scaled is building VMS Eve and VSS Enterprise, the first of the series of each craft; i.e., the development articles.) So then if TSC only "owns the technology" and Scaled is doing the building, why does the article claim TSC is "a manufacturing company"? I'm pretty confused. Does anyone have a clear understanding of this that we might use to improve the article? Obviously, we'll need citations for any sources you have. N2e (talk) 04:03, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
TSC July 2010 update
[edit]There is a brief update on TSC here: A brief Virgin (and TSC) update, from NewSpace Journal.
[TSC,] the joint venture between Virgin Galactic and Scaled Composites that will manufacture the WK2 aircraft and SS2 spaceplanes. “This is a company you’re going to be hearing a lot more about over the next year or so,” he said. “We’re currently assembling a team of individuals to run TSC in Mojave; we’re recruiting like mad.” (There is a list of job openings on the TSC web site.) TSC is currently located in an existing building at Mojave Air and Space Port, but Palermo said there are plans to build a new final assembly hangar there.

July 2011 update: LOTS of additional information on the company, the manufacturing facility, etc.
[edit]The recent Aviation Week article contains a wealth of information on the company and the (now) several buildings being used for manufacturing (including costs). I have updated the article with a few details that are supported by this source. There is much more in the AW article that may be of interest to other editors to further improve the TSC article. Overall view of TSC facilities -- 118,000 sq. ft. in total
[edit]I've just updated the article with the completion of the new FAITH (Final Assembly, Integration, and Test Hangar) 68,000 sq.ft. facility in Mojave, per a source from the Los Angeles Times.
But here is much more on the TOTAL facilities picture for TSC, including TSC's other 48,000 sq. ft. "fabrication and vehicle sub-assembly" building at Mojave, from RLV and Space Transport News, Sep. 2011.:
Located on taxiway-B, FAITH is a 68,000-square-foot, LEED-certified facility that will be used primarily for the final assembly, integration and testing of TSC vehicles before they are delivered to their customers. FAITH will also be used to support major return-to-base vehicle maintenance, and serve as TSC’s operating headquarters. ... FAITH completes the infrastructure needed to manufacture a fleet of TSC’s two core products: the SpaceShipTwo (SS2) sub-orbital spaceship and the WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) carrier aircraft. The facility is specifically sized to support fabrication of SS2 and WK2 with room to produce at least two of each ship at the same time.
It is one of two facilities that TSC will use to produce commercial spacecraft. The other is a 48,000-square-foot existing building at the Mojave Air and Space Port that TSC recently upgraded to serve as the company’s fabrication and vehicle sub-assembly facility. TSC has secured options to expand the size of the FAITH facility and build an adjacent flight test hangar, as the customer base grows.

Branson's investment
[edit]This webzine article provides some solid info on Branson's investment in TSC and in production of the early aircraft: "...$14 million to license Rutan's technology and another $95 million to build five passenger spaceliners over 15 years", Virtuoso Life, p. 4, accessed 2012-09-12. Potential replacement for deadlink source
[edit]Here is a source article in Aviation Week, written only 3 days after a 2011-07-08 article by the same author, that may be useful to fix the deadlink currently in the article. I don't have time to check and see if it supports all four of the existing statements supported by the older (and differently named) article. The Spaceship Company no longer exists as a separate entity from Virgin Galactic.
[edit]This page needs to be updated. The Spaceship Company is now Virgin Galactic, Holdings (stock symbol SPCE) It no longer has its own web page. See excerpt below of a news article.
The Spaceship Company was originally a joint venture between Virgin Galactic and Scaled Composites, later becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Virgin Galactic. Colglazier said in the earnings call that, as part of an internal realignment in December, it “retired The Spaceship Company brand.”
