Repeating Levels?
[edit]Is it true that - at least in the MS-DOS version - the levels would repeat once the last one had been completed? I recall using a cheat program to gain unlimited health and experiencing a never-ending loop of levels, but a friend swears he beat the game and that there was an ending.
My guess is that my friend was thinking of Firehawk, as I also cheated to beat the MS-DOS version of that game and remember an ending.
Some other trivia I've gathered over the years:
- The PC version of Thexder supports only PC Speaker or Tandy sound. Tandy sound is superior, but the graphics are inferior to the hi-res EGA mode.
- Sierra seems to have re-arranged the music from the MS-DOS version of Firehawk, as the music sounds different from the original MSX versions that I've heard. This was probably a side-effect of having to port to different sound hardware (e.g. from whatever the MSX uses, to the Yamaha OPL3 in the Adlib/Soundblaster, as well as the Roland MT-32 MIDI synth).
- The MSX version of Firehawk has an intro story sequence which is not present in the MS-DOS port. However, I recall that Sierra made up for this by including a comic book (or perhaps it was in the manual?) version of the intro story with the MS-DOS version. I don't know if the story is the same, but the comic book version ties the two games (Thexder and Firehawk) together and provides a back-story for both.
Thexder was the first Sierra game I ever owned :) Firehawk was the first game I played on my first sound card, an 8-bit ISA SoundBlaster 2.0. --HunterZ 22:43, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
- It was quite a while ago but I do vaguely recall playing the original DOS Sierra/GameArts Thexder over and over with a cheat waiting to see an ending and finally giving up in disappointment when I couldn't get to it. I remember feeling cheated because it was a Sierra release without an ending! Sierra adventure games were really popular at that time and they all had great endings. I can't remember if Silpheed had an ending.. oh well. I also owned an original 8-bit SoundBlaster btw. Ahh nostalgia.. :) -- Ϫ 07:23, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Moonlight Sonata?
[edit]I used to play the Apple ][ version when I was a kid, and I believe the main title music was the first movement of the Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven. is this right? If so, it might deserve a mention. I've wondered if I can get a recording of the theme from Thexder. I think it was sped up a little. --Howdybob 00:53, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Yes that's right, it was indeed Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. It was also used in the Sierra release, though much sped up. I remember it vividly. In fact ever since I've heard it at that speed I've always thought it sounded better when played fast. It probably could be mentioned somewhere, though I'm not sure how to best integrate it into the text without it coming off as some random bit of trivia inserted indiscriminately. -- Ϫ 07:15, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
