Question about formatting

[edit]

Hello. I am keen to include the specific information about different species - is there a particular style on Wikipedia in order to do so? Seal Boxer (talk) 11:08, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes - don't do it. See WP:UNDUE. Ansh666 17:00, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rename to "Transportation of animals"?

The term "animal transportation" may be confusing for readers who interpret it "animals used for transportation" rather than "animals being transported". We don't appear to have an article on the subject of animals used for transportation. The lack of Elephant transportation is a rather obvious gap in our coverage (that term is well understood to mean transportation by elephants). I suggest this article is renamed to "Transportation of animals" to cut down on possible confusion. Any thoughts? Delicious carbuncle (talk) 17:26, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And Animal transporter. Stalwart111 22:58, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And we do have Animal-powered transport. Stalwart111 23:00, 1 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This sounds like it is a good idea. I had not considered that there could be a confusion about this. I would suggest adding articles such as Donkey rides to that disambiguation page. Not to mention the current confusion with articles for both horsebox and Horse trailer. Would anyone be interested to join me in forming an Animal Transportation Wiki-Project? Seal Boxer (talk) 12:18, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding elephants (and elephant transportation) there is a bit at the Elephant article about Elephants and humans that could possibly become an article in its own right, and an article on Captive elephants. Seal Boxer (talk) 12:22, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Should we use this image?

[edit]
Monkey riding a dog.

We should, right? Maybe we need a new article - Transportation of animals by other animals? Stalwart111 04:47, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

When I saw that I laughed so hard I could barely breathe....*deep breaths*...anyhow, if it's notable enough (which I somehow doubt), go ahead! Ansh666 04:57, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Two people is enough for consensus, right? Stalwart111 05:08, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, why not? Hehe. Ansh666 05:16, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to proceed

[edit]

Now that this article has survived its AFD, we should take the time and effort to fix what's broken.

Title

As mentioned above, the phrase "animal transportation" can as easily be mistaken for the concept of "transportation by animals" as "transportation of animals", and a better title would alleviate the confusion.

Content

A listing of the hows and whys of the transport of any single given species is pointless, unless we plan on expanding the article to include all species, which is clearly in no one's interest. Rather, the article should concentrate on the general topic of transportation of animals, with perhaps a focus on several broad areas, such as "aquatic mammals", "exotic fish", "large land mammals", etc. Perhaps a focus on the various national and international regulations regarding this activity would be in order.

Thoughts?? -- WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 11:11, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed; material on transportation of specific animals should be avoided unless those animals present particularly unusual or notable challenges. This article should cover only more coarse-grained categories of animals, though I lack the subject-matter expertise to help formulate a suitable categorization scheme. Regarding the title, a move proposal discussion is already underway elsewhere on this page. —Psychonaut (talk) 11:40, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think you're both heading in the right direction. I've continued to add sections about specific species in an effort to expand it using the current format, rather than simply leaving it with just a couple of obscure animals. But the format needs some work. There's probably some parts from each example worth using to build larger, more detailed but less specific (if that makes sense) sections on history, zoo animals, aquarium animals, etc. Happy to contribute to the re-write but it would be good to have a small team working on it. Thank you

[edit]

Thank you for all your kind actions to make sure this article can remain. I will be taking a short wikibreak but hope to return and improve the article in future. Seal Boxer (talk) 13:25, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

FYI

[edit]

I've created a new disambiguation at Animal transportation in place of a redirect, as I suggested I would in the renaming discussion above. Pleased feel free to add anything you think I've missed. Cheers, Stalwart111 01:20, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I added animal locomotion to a "see also" section, as it seems similar enough for inclusion. Chris857 (talk) 02:06, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, yeah, good call. Stalwart111 02:20, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The title of this article is still a bit bothersome, in light of the specifics, which pertain entirely to large mammals, some 1/500,000 of the total animal species. There's not even a mention that other animals get transported too (and that's omitting the accidentals). --Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 14:45, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination

[edit]

I do not really understand the reasoning behind closing the last "Did You Know" request for this article (because I was not about? it seems a bit odd), and there are no goats being sung to any more, so I have re-submitted this article.
