Todos

  • incorporate [1], which describes the religious goings-on wrt the university's founding, and details of its initial meetings and accomodations
  • need to add stuff about other faculties (vet really isn't that famous)
  • I have some nice photos of the more modern parts - will add shortly Done.
  • The first sentence: "The University of Glasgow, founded, 1451, in Glasgow, Scotland.". Is it even a sentence? Should be extended I think. made it less broken and easier to read i think.
  • Consider reference to Robert Adam designing original Hunterian Museum. Citation needed if it is to be reinstated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kennedyagain (talkcontribs) 19:40, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Integration

In my day the Queen Margaret Union was for women only. Is that still the case? Tiles 00:44, 12 May 2004 (UTC)

No, not for a long time. It integrated first, before the GUU, and Big Jim's GUU article says that was in 1980 (which I think is correct) - so QMU must have been sometime in the 60s or 70s. I think the informal appelations "The women's union" / "The men's union" lasted for longer. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 09:36, 12 May 2004 (UTC)

It was only a year, maybe a couple of years before the GUU allowed female members (or more accurately was forced to allow them to be members) that the QMU allowed male members. As a graduate of the uni of only a couple years standing Finlay I can tell you that a few folk still refer to the GUU as "The men's union". I think they hanker after 'better' days (quite why men don't want the presence of women around them is beyond me though). Big Jim Fae Scotland 13 May 2004

QMU 1979 and GUU 1980 from Queen Margaret Union --cloudo 11:29, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Both unions were mixed when I returned from my year abroad in September 1980. Students returning to GU in October 1980 were offered a choice between either Union - I chose the QMU for its proximity to the Modern Languages Department. In 1978-79 both unions were still single-sex but the tide was turning. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.25.194.76 (talk) 12:29, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Bower Building clarification

I corrected the following

In November 2001 the century-old Bower Building (home to the university's biology department and biological museum) was gutted by fire. Manuscripts by naturalist Charles Darwin, together with a large number of samples obtained on his expeditions, were destroyed.

as the fire was in October 2001, and the Bower housed the botany department rather than the biology department. I've also added a brief sentence mentioning that the Bower has since been re-opened. Hope this is all right! -- Doughnutraffler (19 November 2004)

I've further edited this - there is no "biological museum" as such in the University. Manuscripts and samples produced / collected by Darwin were not destroyed in the fire. Further, the Botany Department has not existed since 1994, when it became part of the Institute of Biomedical and Life Sciences.

I've edited the information about Darwim slightly and readded it, it would seem that first edition texts of his works were destroyed, but news articles are more vague on whether manuscripts were destroyed or not. Reveilled 01:51, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

-- There is a "biological museum" as such, it is called The Zoology Museum, and is based in the Graham Kerr Building [2] --cloudo (talk) 17:44, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Statistics

The statistics in the article are at odds with those in the infobox. Is it 17,000 students or c 20,000? How many staff/faculty? Tiles 09:05, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

I updated the figures for 2005, taking the numbers from the University's own facts-and-figures page. I also tracked down and added a pointer to the Sutton Trust report describing endowments, but is it really worth mentioning this? While it's true that Edinburgh and Glasgow are 3rd and 4th best-endowed in the UK, each is more than a factor of _ten_ down from Oxbridge, and even those are smallish in US terms. According to the report `Except for Oxford and Cambridge no British university has a significant endowment when judged by American standards', so that drawing attention to this ends up looking rather comical, I fear. Propose image change and deletion

I'm unhappy with the licence of Image:University of Glasgow.jpg. Although it has a copyright-anyuse tag on it, it's not clear that those are the actual terms. The general licence for the website (here) is non-commercial-only. On the actual source page the following terms appear "This photograph is available at a higher resolution for use in publications promoting the University here... The credit should read: 'University of Glasgow'.". It's not immediately clear to me which of these two statements applies to the image we use, and I don't believe either is sufficiently free for use in Wikipedia. The first (non-commercial) is a no-brainer; the second is too restrictive also - free images can be used on any article (say one on Glasgow, architecture, skylines etc.) and not just "publications promoting the University". At best this is equivalent to a fair-use image.

So, I propose to replace that image with this one (which I'll upload to commons as GFDL+cc-by-sa, probably after cropping off some of the vegitation and trying to fix the colours a bit) and mark the old one for deletion. I don't content the latter to be superior; clearly it's not, but it shows roughly the same content, and is properly licenced. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 15:10, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

I don't like the current photo either it is pretty poor quality and the colours look wierd. What about one with less stuff in the way like this or this or one from the library like this or even amore dramatic angle like this? I have these photos like these if the author's creative commons liscence isn't right. --cloudo 11:38, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Adopt an article?

Hi. Can someone merge Global_Village (event) into this article. If it's not notable, then just delete it. I don't think it deserves its own page. Xiner 00:23, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

"Glasgow University" in article titles

A lot of the articles in Category:University of Glasgow are using "Glasgow University" in the article title even when the article itself uses "University of Glasgow" (e.g. Rector of Glasgow University).

I'm inclined to move almost everything to a "University of Glasgow" form in three days time except where individual moves are objected to or where it's clear that "Glasgow University" is the form used in the formal title/current branding of the article's subject.

Articles identified include:

Which of these are currently at the correct location? Timrollpickering 01:23, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Moved, except Glasgow University Boat Club and Glasgow University Scottish Nationalist Association - see additional comments above. Timrollpickering 01:13, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

University ratings

(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)

There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. Colours, and Trinity College

Unless I'm much mistaken, the colours shown as "Master of Theology (MTh)" are, in fact, for the School of Divinity (formerly Faculty of Divinity), which it inherited from Trinity College. The School also awards the BD and LTh degrees as well as the MTh.

Also, the article makes no mention of Trinity College. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 83.217.173.196 (talk) 16:45, 2 May 2007 (UTC).

Neutrality

The introduction to the Glasgow Uni. article seems to focus a little too heavily on the institution's prominent place amongst education establishments in various settings: the top 10 UK uni's; the top 100 in the world; and so on.

Is it worth tweaking the introduction to move away from this?

Creation of Individual Pages

As with several other large universities I wonder if it would improve readability and the amount of info available to create separate pages for many of the large buildings (Boyd Orr, Gilbert Scott, Adam Smith, Wolfson, Joseph Black, Gregory, Gilmorehill...). Each page would feature a photograph, a brief history including architect details and current uses. Thoughts? user:callumsmith1234 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.102.42.39 (talk) 17:54, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Visitor Attractions

I think a section about the excellent Huntarian museum, the art gallery and the zoology museum (all open to the public and free) would improve the article. There some info here: http://www.gla.ac.uk/visitors/visitors/ --cloudo (talk) 17:47, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Black & Gold

There seems to be a bit of a random selection of colours in the infobox - University's main colours (think incorrectly called "Graduate"), Dentistry, Law, Theology and Nursing. The only source I could find for the colours of the University was at the gift shop page (https://sslrelay.com/s130063197.oneandoneshop.co.uk/sess/utn;jsessionid=15495aa3b419fa9/shopdata/index.shopscript) which lists eleven.... Do people think it would be better putting them all in the infobox or putting a section on colours within the article? I tried to do the latter with a table but it went a bit wonky. Rankings wikitable

I boldly removed the Rankings wikitable. I don't mind if anyone wants to fix it and restore it, but in my opinion it is large, unmanageable, and adds little to an already large article. Lateg (talk) 00:22, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

You are invited to the first Glasgow Wiki Meetup which will take place at The Sir John Moore, 260-292 Argyle Street, City of Glasgow G2 8QW on Sunday 12 May 2013 from 1.00 pm. If you have never been to one, this is an opportunity to meet other Wikipedians in an informal atmosphere for Wiki and non-Wiki related chat and for beer or food if you like. Experienced and new contributors are all welcome. This event is definitely not restricted just to discussion of Scottish topics. Bring your laptop if you like and use the free Wifi or just bring yourself. Even better, bring a friend! Click the link for full details. Looking forward to seeing you. Only tertiary-education establishment that offers a complete range?

Under the history section "Glasgow is the only tertiary-education establishment in Scotland that offers a complete range of professional studies, including law, medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, and engineering, combined with a comprehensive range of academic studies, including science, social science, ancient and modern languages, literature, theology and history". That sounds rather dubious. Which of these does e.g. Edinburgh (and probably some others) not offer? Mutt Lunker (talk) 23:51, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Four Departments?

From the lede:

Glasgow has departments of Law, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Dentistry.

What's that about? It's true Glasgow used to have "departments" but there were a helluva lot more than just those four. However, it has, along with most major British universities, gone through umpteen government-inflicted re-structuring exercises, where its various entities were merged, split, flipped over and spun about. Glasgow now consists of four major units called "colleges", consisting of nineteen "schools", covering a gazillion departmental-style "subjects". I suggest we simply ditch paragraph four of the lede entirely. Thomask0 (talk) 23:42, 3 June 2015 (UTC)

Essay-like

A large percentage of this article is pretty superbly written, with lots of detail, and flowing prose. Kudos to the primary author of that. But as a result it's falling foul of Template:Research_paper. The whole thing could be made more succinct, and easier for readers to home in on the important facts, which at the moment is made more difficult than it need be. For example, is it really necessary to mention the duel in Rob Roy, or that at one point the University "[feared that] the surrounding district of Hillhead was running out of suitable building land", or to give bio information on Snowden?Thomask0 (talk) 09:51, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

Staff and student numbers

In the sidebar, the staff and student numbers seem to be out of date.

As of March 2015 there were around 7109 staff in total, see http://www.gla.ac.uk/about/facts/staffnumbers/ . But 3025 of those are research and teaching staff, which don't obviously fall under "administrative staff" as on the sidebar. Would it be possible to separately list the numbers of research & teaching and admin & support staff in the sidebar?

The student numbers also seem out of date, see http://www.gla.ac.uk/about/facts/studentnumbers/ . These are from March 2014, and suggest #undergrads = 18855 (+ 520 at Singapore Institute of Technology) and #postgrads = 7233. There is some double-counting in those numbers, but I suspect not as high as the 2000 and 1000 respective differences to the currently quoted numbers.

Yoghur Edits (4th April 2017)

1) Hi Yoghur, the third column refers to a year and has no citation. If you meant the third row, which refers to the number of students enrolled, the data is from UCAS - the UK's central admissions service. The data is unlikely to be incorrect. If you have any evidence to believe otherwise, please post it here.
2) The sentence you refer to about offer rate: "The university gives offers of admission to 74.3% of its applicants, the 11th lowest amongst the Russell Group", is not incorrect. If you look at the source from the Telegraph, you will see that Glasgow ranks as the 11th lowest amongst the 24 members of the Russell Group.
3) For the UK, Offer Rate is a better representation of the likelihood of an offer. When you refer to 'Acceptance Rate', it is the number of applications divided by the number of acceptances - this may mislead readers in believing that Glasgow rejects far more applicants than the reality.
