Watneys Red Barrel

[edit]

One extremely notable reference to Watneys Red Barrel is missing. In the 1970s, it was frequently known as Grottneys Beer. This was a reference to a regular cartoon that appeared in the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) literature written by Bill Tidy. This was seen as one of the most important factors that resulted in the success of CAMRA in promoting real ale and stopping brewers like Watneys buying up and closing small local breweries. It also resulted in the end of Red Barrel, which was one of the worst beers ever produced in the UK. This needs sources. It is not even mentioned on the CAMRA article, where there is not even a mention of Bill Tidy who produced cartoons for them for decades. Not being in UK now makes it more difficult for me to find sourcers. --Bduke (Discussion) 22:31, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Watneys Red Barrel was bloody vile. It was the drink of choice of northerners on holiday in spain, in places like Torremalinos. Party Fours and Party Sevens were standard for taking to parts. They were a large can that was virtually impossible to open without spraying half the contents all over the room. A common sight in single mens places of abode were three or four empty Part Seven cans soldered together in a long cylinder, and used as a cigarette ash receptacle.

But ofc wikipedia isnt interested in recording verbal fokelore...................82.21.207.51 (talk) 21:09, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not to mention being the butt of jokes well-known throughout the UK (like making love in a punt, etc). But that's the basic problem with encyclopædias: if it's not written down somewhere, it doesn't exist. Paul Magnussen (talk) 04:25, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Watney's Red Barrel was NOT the beer in Party Fours and Party Sevens: WRB was sold as a premium beer, and the Party canned beers were certainly not premium. Of the sources given to back up the claim, the first does not in fact back it up at all, and the second merely directs to the Wikipedia page for The Times, which is presumably smeone's idea of a laugh. Deleted. Thanks. Dormskirk (talk) 19:10, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

TV slogan

[edit]

I was going to add the following to the main article after the first paragraph under the Red Barrel heading. I remember it well from the period, but don't have a citation so hesitated.

It's the same in here as in any bar / It's Watney's Keg Red Barrel

— Slogan from 1960s TV commercial reflecting its stability

Fine - but you really need a citation. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 17:33, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A bit more date research would be welcome - in season 1 of the Young Ones (1982) you can see a can of Party Seven in the party scene. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.167.214.130 (talk) 18:03, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
