Sainthood

[edit]

I think there might be some confusion regarding the current version and the supposed canonisation of William of Roskilde. The source to the statement that he was canonised is a hobby page, although it is sourced I would question its accuracy. If he was canonised, his canonisation date is unknown to us in the source used, the current date used in the article is likely a confusion with Abbot William of Æbelholt who was canonised in 1224.

I tried to dig for more information, but danish sources on Danish saints does not mention William of Roskilde as one of their saints, but acknowledge Abbot William of Æbelholt who was a foreigner like William of Roskilde. One of the sources on the hobby page also states probably a confusion with Abbot William of Æbelholt. Furthermore, the sources for William of Roskilde that say he was canonised get his death and the death of King Svend II wrong, setting it in 1067. It seems it is based on Saxo Grammaticus' fanciful story about William and the King's close relationship who wrote his work 150 years after their deaths with many liberal changes to what is known from more contemporary sources like Adam of Bremen. I suggest removing what cannot be defended with sources until it can be verified using an official list of roman catholic saints and finally remove the claim if it turns out William of Roskilde was never canonised.
