What is the NPOV dispute here? Why was the article tagged? Derex 07:20, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The dispute is that there is no mention of the irony in the statement of Leterme that the french speaking uber-belgians as not intellectually capable of learning dutch

I am not sure, because I did not add the tag.

But I can imagine, that someone considers that far too much prominence has been given to Mr. Letermes recent dispute with his francophone compatriots. I myself, in het Dutch (and Flemish) wikipedia, contented myself with the remark that "this interview has caused a violent polemic among francophone Belgians".

Mr. Leterme just gave air to some widespread feelings amongst Flemish people about their french speaking compatriots, and this should not be taken very seriously. French speaking Belgians also tell a lot of rather stupid things about the Flemish. Lignomontanus 14:30, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe it is good to add comments of Maingain (FDF) into this section as an example of this? That this is thing that happens across the language communities? Intangible2.0 19:15, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This article is about Yves Leterme, not about what happens across language communities. It's not our business to add material merely to defend defend Leterme politically, but if some leading Belgian figure had defended Leterme in those terms, it would be legitimate to quote them. -- Jibal 08:14, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Choice of version of city name[edit]

Leterme's political home base is the Flemish city of Ieper (in French, Ypres). The French name was being used. I have substituted the Dutch version because Ieper is part of the Dutch speaking part of Belgium. Now, I am well aware of the special phenomenon in English speaking culture whereby Belgian cities of all regions are known by the French names. Thus, for research purposes a person would have to use the French names. But I assert that the English speaking world should abandon the old practice, the linguistic partitioning of Belgium being the least reason but compelling in itself. These Dutch speaking cities are governed by a regional government whose language is Dutch. In little more than a generation, the world has gotten used to calling Burma Myanmar and Ceylon, Sri Lanka. Americans have partly transitioned from using the terms Blacks to the term African-Americans. Therefore, the English speaking world can stop using French names en masse for Dutch speaking Belgian locales. Hurmata 06:06, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hospitalisation[edit]

Most people spend time in a hospital every now and then - is this really notable? I suppose if his illness ends up permanently incapacitating or killing him, yes, but all evidence points to a matter that was swiftly resolved and had no impact on his career beyond two or three days last month. Biruitorul (talk) 15:06, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The section could be abridged : however, Leterme's hospitalisation was important in that it deepened Belgium's political uncertainty, since the country had been waiting for its new government for many months and most possible coalitions depended on him. Pronunciation[edit]

How is Leterme pronounced? Is it two or three syllables? Dutch-like or French-like? (IPA is highly appreciated.) Thanks. --KINKKUANANAS 07:47, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

French-like. --87.66.178.79 (talk) 13:22, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

According to the Belgian videos I searched online (this, for example), Yves Leterme seems to be pronounced [if lɛ ˡtɛr mə], with Leterme stressed in the second syllable as in French but otherwise quite Dutch-like, in three syllables. Could IPA-knowledgeable Belgian Dutch speakers confirm this? It would also be great if the pronunciation for his full name, Yves Camille Désiré Leterme, were supplied. --Iceager (talk) 10:00, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not prime minister anymore ?[edit]

I think he isn't prime minister anymore, I've heard he quitted in the night of juli the 15th. 81.165.77.76 (talk) 21:03, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Controversies section[edit]

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think it's a little weird having the 'Controversies' section go before his achievements and such. It almost feels as if someone trying to slight him did it on purpose. Thoughts about moving the section closer to the bottom? Geosultan4 (talk) 02:41, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
