Edit request from Australian Matt, 28 June 2011

My request is for the removal of
link alias-football = Australia national association football team
from this template.
At the moment all {{fbu}}
links are going to the National Team page (see links from the {{fbu|17|AUS}}
template in use here), even though there are suitable U-17, U-20 and U-23 pages for each team.
Regards, Australian Matt (talk) 06:31, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
- You may be right, but this may affect other uses and does not seem to be the best way to go about this. Perhaps we need to add another variable such as
|link alias-football-U17=Australia under 17 national association football team
. But I will ask User:Andrwsc to attend to this request. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:16, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
- The
{{{age|}}}
template should then be included, so that it reads: link alias-football = Australia {{{age|}}} {{{mw|}}} national association football team
- Australian Matt (talk) 00:43, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

[edit]If one's using {{nbt}}, Australia's screwed up --> Australia. Can this be fixed? –HTD 14:01, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
- That's because {{nbt/code}} links to Australia national association basketball team if the input is "Australia". It doesn't seem {{nbt}} uses the country data templates at all. SiBr4 (talk) 14:25, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
- I see. Can someone edit that so that {{nbt}} can use the country data templates? –HTD 16:46, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
- To get the link for Australia working, it's easier to change {{nbt/code}} to point to the right article. If changing the template to use country data templates is helpful for more countries, that could be done using coding like [[{{getalias|{{{1}}}|link|basketball}}|{{{1}}}]] → Australia. SiBr4 (talk) 18:12, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
- Note that this coding only works for country data templates that have a {{{link alias-basketball}}} parameter defined: Belgium doesn't work. Something needs to be done with parser functions to have a "default" link for other countries. SiBr4 (talk) 18:16, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
- I already take care of {{nbt/code}}, but you're right it has to be fixed for everyone else. –HTD 09:13, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

Please add the Australian Army flag and link, so that the link shows correctly when using Template:Army:
| flag alias-army = Flag of Australia (converted).svg | link alias-army = Australian Army
Derekbridges (talk) 18:02, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
- Partly done: Added the army link: Australian Army. I did not add the flag variant since the army flag is identical to the national flag; the files File:Flag of Australia.svg and File:Flag of Australia (converted).svg just use different official sets of colors (web colors vs. Pantone colors). Please replace "Flag of Australia (1901–1903).svg" with "Flag of Australia (1901-1903).svg", and "Flag of Australia (1903–1908).svg" with "Flag of Australia (1903-1908).svg". These files have been renamed. Fry1989 eh? 17:42, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

flag alias-1908 = Flag of Australia (WFB 2014).gif
flag alias-1954 = Flag of Australia (Pantone).svg
flag alias-2004 = Flag of Australia (WFB 2004).gif
Remove these flags as they are just based on the shades used in pictures in different editions of the CIA World Factbook (you can see if you open the flag image) and not are official or even real changes to the flag used by Australia, they should not be included and especially not linked to a specific year. Also remove "pantone" since its not a historical variant from that year 1954
But, I also suggest that the normal "Australia" alias should link to Flag of Australia (converted).svg
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Australia_(converted).svg (which is identical to "pantone")
instead of
Flag of Australia.svg
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_Australia.svg
since the former is the one currently used as the "common file" for the flag of Australia in the article for the country: Australia, and would more be accurate in matching historical predecessors of the Australian flags and consistent with other Commonwealth flags. It is also based on official pantone specifications by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet
There would be no errors or missing flags if these changes were made.
The code which needs to replace the current one for these changes
{{ {{{1<noinclude>|country showdata</noinclude>}}}

- Special:WhatLinksHere/File:Flag of Australia (WFB 2014).gif
- Special:WhatLinksHere/File:Flag of Australia (Pantone).svg
- Special:WhatLinksHere/File:Flag of Australia (WFB 2004).gif
- Partly done: The 3 spurious flags have been removed. Now would be a good time to get the files deleted before they confuse the situation again.
- I'm reluctant to change Flag of Australia.svg to Flag of Australia (converted).svg. I think it would be a "cleaner" change to re-upload the image at Flag of Australia (converted).svg as a new version of Flag of Australia.svg. Feel free to disagree. Cabayi (talk) 09:47, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
- Cabayi well, the Flag of Australia.svg is also based on government specifications, so both files should probably exist. However, the "converted"/pantone variant is the commonly used one (like on the article for the country itself and the article for its flag), The RGB variant is basically only so widely used since this template uses it.--Havsjö (talk) 09:55, 12 January 2019 (UTC)
- Havsjö - I'm only looking at this in terms of templates and what might be an efficient and effective way of doing stuff. If it comes down to the virtues, aesthetics or political sensitivity of having two near identical Australian flags I think you'd need to have that discussion at WP:AWNB. Replace
flag alias = Flag of Australia.svg
with
flag alias = Flag of Australia (converted).svg
I was asked to ask about this on the Australian notice board, which I did around 4 weeks ago, I got 1 oppose and 2 support. There was no major "controversy" aside from that the the person who opposed thought it might look darker. Anyway, the question there is rather "dead" now, and with the consensus there in mind and the fact that this is the accepted file used on both Australia and Flag of Australia and equally "official" as the current file, I now put it a formal request to change it for the flag icon's as well.

The flag template looks so strange after the previous edit.
[edit]A few Wikipedians, including me, were used to the original SVG image used in this template. This new template makes it feel so dark and strange while the other one stood out so well. It makes the sports pages feel so disgusting like the square-shaped Belgium flag. Can someone please do something about this? #bodyContent a[title="User:Aaxelpediaa"] { background-color: #0000ff; color: #ff0000; font-weight: bold; (talk) 09:38, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

Population data for Australia needs to be updated because it is incorrect. The current figure (at time of writing) on the population clock page on the ABS website shows 26,050,073 whereas the entry for Australia in the Wiki page shows 25,979,011 despite the link https://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs%40.nsf/94713ad445ff1425ca25682000192af2/1647509ef7e25faaca2568a900154b63?OpenDocument going to the correct information. I'd like to request that File:Flag of the United Kingdom.svg be added as a parameter for pre-federation (i.e., colonial) Australia, as there are instances (particularly for sports) where there is a desire to link to Australia, but the era (pre-1901) means they were using File:Flag of the United Kingdom.svg (not National Colonial Flag), such as for the 1896 Summer Olympics, for example. Note that the desire to link to Australia (and not Australia at the 1896 Summer Olympics) means {{flagIOC|AUS|1896 Summer}}
would not be suitable. Rowing007 (talk) 17:24, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

- @Paine Ellsworth: How is this any different from my requests to Template talk:Country data Austria and Template talk:Country data Sweden, both of which you've implemented? All I'm asking is to add a missing variant. Prior to 1901, Australia was not a unified nation but six separately administered British colonies, but the results of Edwin Flack are typically given with him listed as Australian. The Australian Olympic Committee was founded and recognised in 1895. Rowing007 (talk) 19:24, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
