The First is an upcoming American web television drama series created by Beau Willimon and starring Sean Penn and Natascha McElhone. The show portrays members of a team of astronauts as they become the first humans to visit Mars.

The show was ordered by Hulu in May 2017 with a straight-to-series order and will be a co-production with Channel 4. It is set to debut in 2018.[1]

Premise

The First will follow "the first human mission to Mars, while exploring the challenges of taking the first steps toward interplanetary colonization. The story focuses not only on the astronauts, but also on their families and loved ones, as well as the ground team on Earth."[2]

Development

In September 2017, Hulu announced that they had given a straight-to-series order for The First, a new television series from Westward Productions. The show was created by Beau Willimon who is also set to write it as well. He will executive produce the series alongside his producing partner Jordan Tappis.[1] The series reportedly has been given a budget of around $54.6 million dollars.[9]

Casting

In September 2017, it was announced that Sean Penn[3] and Natascha McElhone[4] had been as the series' leads. In October 2017, LisaGay Hamilton[5], Oded Fehr, James Ransone[6], and Hannah Ware[7] were cast as series regulars. In November 2017, Anna Jacoby-Heron was cast in the series in a co-starring role.[8]

Filming

The series was set to finish pre-production and enter principal photography on September 18, 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The shoot is scheduled to last about 85 days.[9]
