I found you were open to adoptees over at the program. I'm a newborn Wikipedian, so kinda clueless there. I'm also a professional copywriter, licensed pharmacy technician and major sci/fi fantasy fan. I do a lot of medical copywriting and the lack of peer-reviewed references in some articles is driving me batty. I'd love to fix them, I have access to a lot of references already due to the nature of my IRL work, but I don't know how.

== I'm a Bastard,<br />
The major offenders I've seen are in natural and alternative remedies. Herbalism is one of my ongoing hobbies and I believe it has value. I also believe it will never be taken seriously as long as proper scientific studies are ignored in favor of popular psuedoscience authors.

I'm also an Irish pagan, so not against metaphysics per se. I just loathe seeing metaphysics, medicine and science all mixed up together and thrown out there to confuse people. In addition, I enjoy documented historical research, classic literature and I'm going to college for art history whenever I have the time.

Hope that gives you enough information to decide if I'm a good fit for you! Thanks for taking the time to read this and I'll be waiting for your answer.[[User:IceandInk|IceandInk]] ([[User talk:IceandInk|talk]]) 18:32, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

hello, just out of curiosity, just how important do you think it is to place tags on stubs, that make no unverifiable claims, and have links to all of the source data? --emerson7 20:02, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Status report on the Country outlines (Around the World) project

Penubag has been hard at work developing awards for this project. He has completed a very professional looking medal, and is almost done with a trophy that is truly awesome - both of these awards are visually stunning.

I and a few others have been working steadily on the country outlines - one for every country of the world! They're shaping up nicely. So far, 28 of them have been moved to article space - these aren't complete, but they are complete enough to be made available for readers to benefit from them. The rest of the set still includes temporary data that was generated by template (because it matched most but not all of the countries), and before the lists can be moved to article space, all the temporary data needs to be checked for accuracy, and if incorrect it needs to be replaced with correct information.

The effort on the lists has been on 3 fronts:

  1. Working on the lists in article space to complete them so they will be good examples for editors working on the rest of the set.
  2. Adding or correcting other data (fixing redlinks, filling in blanks, etc.). The main type of work participants in "the contest" will be doing. The reason we're doing this is to get a feel for it, to develop the fastest methods for each type of task, etc.
  3. Improving the overall design and implenting changes on all 247 pages, whether in article space or not.

There has been some opposition to us running the contest based on edit counts or iterations. The concern is that we should reward quality work and not quantity, for fear of crappy edits done quickly without thought. I pointed out that the collection of pages are drafts in the Wikipedia namespace (therefore posing no danger to article space) and that most of the work needs to be done with power tools like AWB and Linky (which are specifically designed for repetitive work), but the reply was that we shouldn't set the precedent of rewarding barnstars for numerically-based tasks, and implied the threat of continuously MfD'ing the contest if we attempted to do so (like they did with the Awards Center - I was very surprised and disappointed that participants didn't step up to defend it). So we need to be careful in determining what exactly the awards will represent, and how they will be awarded.

Since rewarding iterations (passes with AWB on all of the pages in the set) are out, we really don't need the globe in stand anymore. Two awards should suffice.

Once we get started with the contest, I'd like to kick the whole thing off with a round of medals for those dedicated few who have worked hard on the project so far.

What do you think of all of this?

Your comments and suggestions are most welcome.

Have you read the novel? If so, please help. I'm going to work on that as well as Heroes Die, Blade of Tyshalle, and Stover's page. The Rypcord. 02:38, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, I have not read any of Stover's novels, I am a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels and was going through a bot generated list of new literature articles looking for new novel articles to cleanup and tag but I will see what I can do. If you are enjoy fantasy or sci-fi you should check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels, they can always use more members. --Captain-tucker (talk) 09:31, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Member in Focus
  • Hi, I have been around this project for quite some time now. Bit of a hiatus earlier this year, but back now just contributing. The Novels WikiProject wasn't started by me but my interest in the subject initially attracted me to what was here. It has developed substantially in the last few years and now takes in all forms of Narrative Prose Fiction within its scope. We are about the content not the format of the prose so WP:Books differs a little in that an implied format is entailed; also they can also focus more clearly on non-fiction. WP:Literature are the "new boys on the block" and are a little more focused on the "quality" aspects of literature, and again they have less emphasis on pure fiction and the prose aspect. Our biggest problem is to maintain a certain focus of interest across such a broad subject area and we need workers who can develop task forces, teams for assessment, teams for peer review and so much more. "So much to do, so little time, I'm late, I'm late, I'm late" to misquote from Alice in Wonderland.

Thank you for getting this newsletter back on its feet and going again. No Boylo equals no Novels Portal...heck, without you, we wouldn't have had a newsletter for these past months...so, for all of the members of the Novels WikiProject, I want to thank you for the time and effort you have put into this project, and I wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors. Thanks, pal.

Barnstar

The Editor's Barnstar
I would like to give you this barnstar for assessing so many book articles. Schuym1 (talk) 20:36, 8 November 2008 (UTC)}[reply]

Hi Cap'n - I've made some edits to the Juliet Marillier page and the Sevenwaters Trilogy page. Some are under an IP address; others under my own tag. I am so glad you're a JM fan - you've obviously been the guiding star of the pages that relate to her and her work!

As I know Juliet Marillier personally, I interviewed her in order to get her opinion on my proposed changes. Some are slight tweaks to biographical info: others involve clarifying the relationship between the new book, Heir to Sevenwaters, and the original trilogy. I also modified the plot outines to remove spoilers. I left comments on the Talk pages of the articles concerned.

Juliet is hoping to get a page going for the Saga of the Light Isles books, too, but as a newbie contributor I have no idea how to do this. Help? CarolFN (talk) 03:44, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'n not sure I would say that I am the 'guiding star'. I did read the Sevenwaters Trilogy and created separate pages for each novel. They were actually the first articles I created. I have not read any of her other works. I would be more than happy to assist you in adding to her pages here on Wikipedia. If you want to create a new page for the here is the process that I use that has worked for me:
  1. First create a 'work in process' page within your user space for working on the new page. Other editors will not bother with with anything in your user space normally. Many editors monitor new pages in the mail article space so if you create a very simple page if can get quickly deleted. So for example if you wanted to create a page for Saga of the Light Isles, I would recommend starting it in User:CarolFN/Saga of the Light Isles. Just click on the prior red link, it will take you to a new blank page where you can start editing. In this way you can edit incrementally without having any other editors looking to make sure that your article meets notability guidelines as you write it.
  2. The best thing to do when first editing on wikipedia is to just copy the style and formatting of other similar articles such as The Sevenwaters Trilogy or The Bridei Chronicles.
  3. When you are completed you then 'Move' the article to its real name Saga of the Light Isles which would move it into wikipedia main article space.
Feel free to ask me any questions as you go, remember one of wikipedia's main principals is to be bold. --Captain-tucker (talk) 18:07, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea how to reply to this but many thanks:-)~CarolFN

(Later) I've created the page as suggested http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:CarolFN/Saga_of_the_Light_Isles but the lines of text don't appear to be breaking. Can you tell me where I've gone wrong?CarolFN (talk) 07:02, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Carol, The problem was the extra spaces at the beginning of the bulleted sentences. If you add spaces before a sentence it put them in that box you saw. Also you should only sign talk pages not articles so I removed that and cleaned up the lead formatting. Looks like you have a good start going. Please feel free to ask me any questions at all. --Captain-tucker (talk) 11:15, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

disambiguation page

Hello Capt'n, thank you for your welcome. As you perhaps have noticed I started a lemma about Holland (publisher). As there are several "holland" lemma's, perhaps it is an idea to have a disambiguation page for Holland. I am rather new on the English Wikipedia, I think it is better someone else should be the judge of this. Yours, --LaconIII (talk) 19:42, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

LaconIII, there actually is a disambiguation page for Holland, its Holland (disambiguation). You may want to put a Template:Dablink at the top of your article and add your Holland (publisher) to the disambiguation page. And thanks for the Thank You, I have placed several hundred of those welcome templates on new users talk page and you are the first to actually say Thank You! --Captain-tucker (talk) 21:16, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your answer, that's very helpfull. I noticed today the template link is now also on top of Holland. I am sorry to hear I am one of the few for a respond on a welcome; that must change. Hopefully we have started something...--LaconIII (talk) 10:10, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, maybe you did start something. Someone just left me a Thank You on another welcome that I left on their talk page, User talk:McTavish 2, good job LaconIII. --Captain-tucker (talk) 11:43, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wauw! (I am telling everyone I am having a pint on Captain-tucker of en-wikipedia and there is laughter. Thank you, I am enjoying this)--LaconIII (talk) 16:25, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dick Vitale

Hello Captain-tucker, I am sorry if my editing has disturbed or intruded on the Wikipedia collection of information, but I must inform you, the information about my article is incorrect and inaccurate. I feel as I have been insulted in my page. Therefore, I ask you to remove my page or suspend it temporarily so any of the true information may not be altered in any way. Thank You. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Polak414 (talkcontribs) 02:55, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you have issues with specific facts in the article you have a couple options, first is to start a discussion on the articles talk page and reach consensus with the other editors. There is a wikipedia policy regarding the biography of living people which this article must adhere to, it can be found here. In addition there is the Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard, which is for reporting and discussing Biographies of living people policy issues which require outside intervention. But you can not just arbitrarily remove the contents of an entire article with no discussion, this is WP:VANDALISM and will be reverted. --Captain-tucker (talk) 10:22, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've added replies to the Juliet Marillier section on your talk page. Many thanks for the help. You will see that I have a problem with lines wrapping - or not wrapping...CarolFN (talk) 07:04, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Beaufort (novel)

Thanks, Cap'n, for the helpful addition of the Infobox template! I followed its link for the code, and find that it's within my abilities though I'll have to search a bit to fill in the required into. I'll get onto it ASAP, unless someone else beats me to it :-) Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 10:48, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Ordinary-things.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Ordinary-things.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:23, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
