Name and members[edit]

three members of ・・・・・・・・・

There is no official pronunciation of the name — which consists of nine interpuncts originally representing the nine founding members, although the actual number of members varied over the history of the group and ten performers have been in the group in total, albeit not at the same time — but the group has referred to themselves in interviews and online variously as dots, dotstokyo, dotsnine, tenten (a colloquial term for kana voicing marks which are dot-shaped), tenkyu (indicating that there are nine dots but also a pun off "thank you"), and so on.[1]

Each member referred to themselves pseudonymously as "・" (ten), although they also differentiated themselves online through a series of nicknames, which changed regularly in synch. The real identities of the members were not widely publicised during the group's tenure, but the birth names of most members are now known to the public.

Events[edit]

Pre-launch period[edit]

In April 2016, Girls' Tokyo Tsukurou!! held a casting call for new idol groups called "Project Idol Audition".[1][5] Themes of the competition were "idols in the post-Pokémon Go era", "idols who are always dressed sharply",[6] and "urban ghosts".[7]

In response to these themes, the group decided that they would not reveal their own names or full faces (choosing to wear black blindfold-like face masks with polka-dot rhinestone decorations), that their music would take inspiration from shoegaze and underground punk rock, and that their performance would be characterised by use of technology. Live performances would be referred to as 'observations', and fans as 'observers' to further the concept that the band was a phenomenon appearing spontaneously in Tokyo. Furthermore, the band established a policy that only photographs can be taken during live shows; videos would not be allowed.
