Newsletter[edit]

History[edit]

Hive80 was founded on April 15, 2020.[11] The name Hive80 is a response to a 2017 Pew Research Survey that showed that 80% of internet users had searched for a health-related topic online. The same study revealed that the majority of people were looking up specific health topics and concerns as well as treatments. A large number were also exploring wellness topics such as health and fitness. Mental health also made up 21% of health searches.[12]

The survey established for founder, Jennifer Banmiller, that people were seeking health support online, not just for illness but for overall wellness. A study by the Journal of Medical Research discovered that 85% of oncologists and primary care physicians use social media to read or explore health information, and 60% said that social media “improves the care they deliver.” [13] and the use of social media by medical professionals continues to increase.[14] Pew research also indicated there is a gap between the number of people seeking health resources online and the number of people who are satisfied with the information they can access online. [15]

With the the knowledge that patients and physicians alike needed a place to interact over health wellness and medicine related issues, Banmiller sought to carve out a private and interactive space for those 80% of internet users. Founder, Jennifer Banmiller, states in her founder's message that she founded Hive80, "to help you understand and take control of all the critical facets of your health, and the health of those you love, in a medical system that has unfortunately run amok."[16] Hive 80 is intended to be a safe and secure place for users to share their health stories and concerns and ask for advice from peers and physicians. Banmiller had worked in the pro-consumer advocacy sphere for 25 years and understand the value of education and community in preventing companies from taking advantage of consumer with faulty devices, medicines, and procedures.[17]

With accessibility at the heart of its mission, The platform is intended to be an aggregate of health resources where consumers can quickly become educated in their field of interest. After working for many years as a consumer and patient advocate in drug recall cases, Banmiller developed the platform to address the need for a more informed consumer of health, wellness and medical products. Though other medical platforms exist such as WebMD and MayoClinic, they lacked the peer-to-peer support, exclusive dedication to health care, and the variety of resources that Banmiller felt was essential to empowerment.

Hive80 fills the market void by focusing on creating a seamless experience for users who seek access to information from other members through relevant articles, videos, and conversation. Hive80 will also focus on creating a positive experience between health-care consumers and providers. In an HRI survey, over 60% of health-care consumers responded that they are likely to trust information posted by providers and that over 40% are likely to share information with providers via social media.[18] This open interaction between health-care consumers and providers creates an environment conducive to cost-effective advertising on the platform.
