Patrick Simondac[edit]

Patrick Simondac born November 11, 1989, better known by his pseudonym Patrick Starrr, is a Filipino-American YouTube personality and makeup artist.[1] As of March 2018, his channel has over 214 million video views and over 3.5 million subscribers.[2] He is a large figure within the male beauty community and is a 'beauty boy,' a male that wears makeup, who is not trans, and not a drag queen. [3]

Early Life[edit]

Patrick was born and raised in Orlando, Florida. He has two brothers named Peter and Paul and is the oldest of the three. Growing up, Patrick engaged in a variety of activities, such as swimming, tennis, and golf. He studied classical piano and taught piano lessons when he was a teenager. He also accompanied his friends in choir sessions and singing competitions. [4]

In high school, he started doing photography and taking headshots for his friends in the theatre world. He would then use Photoshop to fix up his pictures and from there, he discovered that he could add makeup to these pictures. Following his experience in Photoshop, he gained an interest in makeup. [5]

After high school, Patrick worked at Panera, was a freelance photographer, did hair and makeup for others, and worked at MAC Cosmetics. He was studying to be a nurse at the same time but ultimately decided to continue a career in beauty. [6]

It was when Patrick was in his early twenties that he started wearing makeup himself. When he was doing makeup as a side job he started to put makeup on himself to understand and learn how to do makeup better on other people. He started experimenting with makeup on himself and ended up loving the way he looked wearing it. As he got older he started wearing makeup daily. [7]

YouTube[edit]

Patrick started doing YouTube videos as a place to show off his makeup skills. Felt that YouTube was the only place he could do that. He first joined YouTube February 26, 2013, and his channel took off. He was just 21 at the time. [8]

He is known for doing full glam makeup and often collaborates with celebrities and other famous YouTubers. For instance, some of the celebrities featured on his channel include; Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, Ashley Tisdale, Tyra Banks, plus more.[9]

He often works closely with other male makeup gurus such as Manny Mua and is known as one of the 'beauty boys'. [10]

His most popular video is "The Power of Makeup" which shows him with half of his face done up in full makeup, the other half left with manly stubble, illustrating Patrick's message that makeup can simply be a form of self-expression. "The Power of Makeup" was a trend on YouTube started by NikkieTutorials. [11]

Other Ventures[edit]

Starrr has partnered with many brands over the years of him being on YouTube Benefit Cosmetics, Formula X, Jouer, NYX and most recently MAC Cosmetics.[12]

His collaboration with Mac Cosmetics was for the holiday season in 2017 which featured 12 pieces, including a new loose powder, as he is known for baking with loose power in his tutorials. He brought his philosophy to a life of “Makeup is one-size-fits-all” with his collection with MAC, having custom-colour essentials to match every skin tone.[13]

He also assisted with the Sephora Formula X and developed three nail polish shades. The names of the nail polishes were She Better Werk, Lucky , and Yazzz.[14]

Awards and Nominations[edit]

In 2015, Patrick was part of the NYX FACE Awards, where he was part of the top six and had a chance to be named NYX Cosmetics Beauty Vlogger of the Year. won the category of Innovation.[15]

Patrick won the award in 2017 in Beauty at The Streamy Awards, which honour the best in online video and the creators behind it, streamed worldwide on Twitter.[16]

Personal Life[edit]

Patrick is an openly gay man and proud to be. He is also gender non-conforming.[17]

Starr has also talked about being plus size and dealing with the issues that come with being plus size in the media, hoping that talking about this issue he is helping others feel confident in their own skin.  He coined the tagline “Makeup is a one-size-fits-all” meaning that makeup is for everyone no matter what size, gender, sexual ordination or race you are.[18]
