Jackie is the sixth studio album release by American recording artist Ciara, released on May 1, 2015, by Sony Music Entertainment. It is the singer's first studio album since the release of the eponymous Ciara (2013). The album was preceded by the release of the lead single "I Bet". The album's title is in reference to the singer's real-life mother, Jackie Harris and features production by Harmony Samuels and Polow da Don.

Background and development

[edit]

In September 2013, producer Mike WILL Made-It confirmed he was working with Ciara on her seventh studio album.[1] Ciara later confirmed in the January 2014 issue of GENLUX magazine that she was in the studio working on the album, stating: "My inspiration is life and reality. It’s important to express myself musically. I am so connected to who I am now, and I want to share pieces of myself through my songs. It’s like having a conversation with the world."[2] In an interview with Rap-Up, Ciara revealed that work on the then-untitled Jackie began around Thanksgiving 2013, revealing: "I’ve been recording on my album. I actually started around Thanksgiving of last year and I’m in the most comfortable creative space I could possibly be in. I actually will be giving my fans something really soon. I’m really excited about it because it’s so beautiful and really sweet."[3]

Release and artwork

[edit]

In early March 2015, Ciara announced the release of Jackie, calling it her "dream album", revealing: ""I always have a vision of what I want to do, but this time I was super specific. I feel like it's such an important time for me, personally, professionally and musically. I am doing everything I could dream of for this album. Sonically I am so content; I had my dream team of producers who I always wanted to work with." She futher confirmed the release of the album for May 2015, and revealed the album's title was inspired by her real-life mother, Jackie Harris. She revealed, "My album is called Jackie, which is my mom's name. It's inspired by how I can now see the world through her eyes, being a mom, and so that's where the title came from."[4] Later that month, the singer unveiled the official album artwork for the album, showing Ciara in a "gorgeous, raw, topless cover shot", as described by Fuse editor Jeff Benjamin.[5][6] Entertainment Weekly editor Isabella Biedenharn called the album's cover "timeless" and "gorgeously understated".[7] Vogue Italia editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani served as the shoot's creative director, while photographer Francesco Carrozzini photographed the album's artwork.[7]

[edit]

On March 9, 2015, Ciara's management team released a press release for dancer auditions for the singer's upcoming concert tour, to launch sometime later that year.[8] Twenty-two days later, on March 31, Ciara officially announced her plans to embark on the Jackie Tour across the United States, for the month of May 2015.[9][7]
