Chronology
PredecessorBMW 5 Series (F10)

The G30 BMW 5 Series BLANK[1]BLANK is a mid-size executive car produced by German automaker BMW. Launched in October 2016, it is the seventh and current generation of the BMW 5 Series.[2] Sales commenced in February 2017.[3]

The 5 Series is offered in three body styles:

  • 4-door saloon (G30)
  • 5-door estate (G31), marketed as the 5 Series Touring
  • 4-door long-wheelbase saloon (G38), a version sold only in China, marketed as the 5 Series Li

The fastback 5 Series Gran Turismo model of the previous generation was replaced by the 6 Series Gran Turismo.

The G30 was the first generation of 5 Series to be offered as a plug-in hybrid.

Launch[edit]

The 5 Series saloon was revealed on October 12, 2016[4] before making its public debut in January 2017 at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.[5]

BMW created The Escape, a short action film featuring a 540i M Sport, to promote the G30 5 Series.[6] The Escape was released online on October 23, 2016.[7][8]

The 5 Series Touring was revealed in February 2017[9] before making its public debut in March at the Geneva Motor Show.[10]

The 5 Series Li debuted in April 2017 at the Shanghai Motor Show.[11] Its wheelbase is 133 millimetres (5.2 in) longer than that of the normal 5 Series saloon.[11] The 5 Series Li is exclusively sold in China.[11]

Specifications[edit]

Platform[edit]

The G30 5 Series uses a version of BMW's Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform.[12] This modular architecture was first used by the G11 7 Series.[13] The 5 Series' chassis is made from a mixture of different steel grades and aluminium.[14]

Much of the 5 Series' body panels are constructed of aluminium, including the bonnet, boot lid, roof and doors.[15]

Suspension and steering[edit]

The 5 Series uses double-wishbone front suspension and 5-link rear suspension.[12] The Touring models use self-levelling rear air suspension.[9]

Active anti-roll bars (named "Dynamic Drive" by BMW) are optional equipment.[16]

All versions of the 5 Series use rack and pinion steering with electric power assistance.[17] "Integral Active Steering" is an option on some models; it combines electromechanical four-wheel steering and a variable-ratio steering rack.[16][18]

Powertrain[edit]

The 5 Series is offered with a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. It is also offered as a plug-in hybrid.[19]

The 520d is fitted as standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, while ZF's 8HP 8-speed automatic is optional.[16] All other models, including the 520d xDrive, are exclusively available with the ZF automatic.[20][2]

BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system is optional on some lower-powered models and is standard fitment on higher-powered models.

Special models[edit]

530e iPerformance[edit]

The 530e iPerformance is a plug-in hybrid variant of the 5 Series saloon. It uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine working in tandem with an 83 kW electric motor. The electric motor is integrated into the car's 8-speed automatic transmission and obviates the need for a torque converter. The electric motor is fuelled by a 9.2 kWh lithium-ion battery mounted beneath the rear seats. The 530e is offered with rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive.

The 530e has a claimed all-electric range of 50 km (31 mi) under the New European Driving Cycle.[36] The US EPA estimated all-electric range is 16 miles (26 km).[37][38]

M Performance models[edit]

BMW produces two M Performance variants of the G30 5 Series, the M550i xDrive and the M550d xDrive. These are high-performance versions of the 5 Series positioned between regular 5 Series models and the range-topping M5.

M550i xDrive[edit]

The M550i xDrive uses a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 456 hp and 479 lb⋅ft.

The M550i xDrive is exclusively available as a saloon.

M550d xDrive[edit]

The M550d xDrive is the most powerful diesel 5 Series. It uses a quad-turbocharged inline-6 producing 394 hp and 561 lb·ft. ZF's 8HP 8-speed automatic is the sole gearbox option. Integral Active Steering is standard equipment. Unlike the M550i, the M550d is available in the saloon and Touring body styles.

M5 (F90)[edit]

The M5 version of the G30 5 Series (codenamed F90) was revealed in August 2017.[39] It uses a development of the S63 twin-turbocharged V8 engine used in the F10 M5.[40] This produces a maximum of 591 bhp and 553 lb⋅ft. The F90 M5 uses a version of BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system called M xDrive; this makes it the first M5 to use all-wheel drive.[41] The F90 is also the first M5 to be equipped with an automatic gearbox;[42] ZF's 8HP 8-speed unit is the sole transmission option.[40][43]

Alpina variants[edit]

Alpina Automobiles makes two variants of the G30 5 Series, the B5 Bi-Turbo and the D5 S.

B5 Bi-Turbo[edit]

The B5 Bi-Turbo debuted at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.[44] It uses a modified version of BMW's N63 twin-turbocharged V8 engine. Compared to the standard N63, the B5's V8 uses uprated pistons by Mahle,[45] new twin-scroll Garrett turbochargers[46] and new spark plugs by NGK. It also receives an engine remap.[45]

This is mated to ZF's 8HP75 8-speed automatic transmission, the internals of which are strengthened by Alpina to cope with the engine's high peak torque. xDrive all-wheel drive is standard. The B5 uses 20″ forged alloy wheels to reduce unsprung mass and Pirelli high-performance tyres.

Performance data[47][48]
Model Power Torque 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) Top speed
B5 Bi-Turbo 599 bhp (447 kW) @ 5,750 - 6,250 rpm 800 N⋅m (590 lb⋅ft) @ 3,000 - 5,000 rpm 3.5 seconds 330 km/h (205 mph)
B5 Bi-Turbo Touring 599 bhp (447 kW) @ 5,750 - 6,250 rpm 800 N⋅m (590 lb⋅ft) @ 3,000 - 5,000 rpm 3.7 seconds 325 km/h (202 mph)

D5 S[edit]

The D5 S made its debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.[49]

The D5 S uses one of two Alpina-modified versions of BMW's B57 inline-6 diesel engine, depending on the market.[50] Left-hand drive D5's use a triple-turbocharged version of the engine producing 382 hp and 590 lb⋅ft. The saloon-only right-hand drive D5 S uses a twin-turbocharged version producing 322 hp and 516 lb⋅ft.

The D5 S is available exclusively with xDrive all-wheel drive.

ZF's 8HP 8-speed automatic is the sole gearbox option for both versions.

Production[edit]

Like all previous 5 Series generations, the G30 5 Series is built at BMW's factory in Dingolfing, Germany.[16] This acts as the lead plant for G30 5 Series production.[16][54]

In addition, from March 2017, contract manufacturer Magna Steyr began building 5 Series saloons at its factory in Graz, Austria.[55]

All 5 Series Li production takes place at BMW Brilliance's factory in the Dadong district of Shenyang, China.[56][57]

Complete knock down (CKD) production of the 5 Series takes place in the following locations:
