To get some practice editing you can use a sandbox. You can create your own personal sandbox for use any time. It's perfect for working on bigger projects. Then for easy access in the future, you can put {{My sandbox}}
on your user page. By the way, seeing as you haven't created a user page yet, simply click here to start it.
Please remember to:
- Always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes
~~~~
at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your signature, a link to your talk page, and a timestamp. - Leave descriptive edit summaries for your edits. Doing so helps other editors understand what changes you have made and why you made them.
Message you posted at my talk page (19:27, 4 October 2024)
[edit]Hello Avemalakoff,
I am attaching below the message you posted at my talk page two days ago, and my original reply to it. I will then post a new message to you, here at your talk page, suggesting a possible way forward. My intent is to assist you as I would any new editor, and within the guidelines of Wikipedia. More later.
With kind regards;
[Message text copied here from my talk page:]
I am trying to place information on my book on the Man in the Iron Mask, published in August 2024 (see reference below) on the Wikipedia page Man in the Iron Mask. Second Son, the Man in the Iron Mask, contains a solution and new data on the 300-year-old mystery of the Man in the Iron Mask based on archival and library sources, fieldwork by the author in France, and personal consultation with geneticists and craniofacial specialists in the U.S., France, and Belgium, a dramatically different approach from the entire previous body of writing on the mystery. Historians have been searching for the identity and significance of the prisoner of Louis XIV, named Eustache Dauger, held for 34 years in 4 French prisons until his death on November 19, 1703. This book solves most of the problems associated with that mystery and leaves only the problem of analyzing DNA of Louis XIV, which is being attempted. The results of the research will start a conversation about the legitimacy of Louis XIV. I am the first writer to theorize Dauger had cleft lip/palate. I found this diagnosis by following leads in French official state military documents that no writer ever noticed, let alone explored. Through recent genetic studies on craniofacial malformations published in scientific journals, I made a circumstantial link between King Louis XIII's dental problems to Dauger. No writer before me has ever linked the two men.
Second Son is the first book to see the cultural traditions of seventeenth-century France as guides to understanding the events and persons in the story.
- Hello Avemalakoff, and welcome to Wikipedia;
I have just posted a welcome message on your talk page, to help you familiarise yourself with the editorial standards of our encyclopaedia. Since you are the author of a book on the subject of the Man in the Iron Mask, I would point you specifically to the Wikipedia guidelines in the section on No original research, which provides guidance on Primary, secondary and tertiary sources. Please familiarise yourself with these important aspects of editing Wikipedia.
The edit you made, here, on 3 October, was reverted by another editor because, as the author, you are considered a primary source, and I would also point out that Wikipedia is not a platform for promotion. Any updates to Wikipedia must be corroborated by a secondary (an independent review of your book, for example), or a tertiary source. I hope this helped.
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk)(become old-fashioned!) 20:19, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
Possible way forward
[edit]Hello again,
As one of the editors of the Wikipedia article on the Man in the Iron Mask, I would be happy to look out for reviews of your book in historical magazines, or any other reliable source(s). If/when at least two reviews become available, and subject to the usual criteria of verifiability, I would then write a short section in the article about your theory or candidate, similar to the sections on the books by Paul Sonnino (2016) and Josephine Wilkinson (2021).
However, please may I ask that you acquaint yourself with Wikipedia's guidelines on conflict of interest, and understand that my role would strictly be "to summarize, inform, and reference; not promote, whitewash, or sell."
You don't need to do anything about my offer of assistance, but if you wish to communicate with me, then please do so from here (your user talk page), using the following opening text: "Hello {{U|Pdebee}}", and the {{U}} template will post a notification at my own user page to prompt me to come here to read your message. Thank you.
With kind regards;
- Patrick: You have been very nice and I appreciate it. FYI: After I got this: on October 5:
- "You're insistent in trying to get a book you wrote mentioned on Wikipedia. You are trying to get more eyes on it; ergo, you are trying to promote this book to other people. If a completely uninvolved editor (with no prompting from you) came across your book, found its contents useful, and used it to cite information, then that's not a problem. If you're going to effect any action yourself, ColinFine is right: make an edit request on the article's talk page, but it will be scrutinised as you are the book's author.
- I have no interest in your book; I am merely telling you that continuing on this course of action is likely to land you in trouble with contravening a policy sooner or later, which may result in sanctions for your account. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:49, 5 October 2024 (UTC)"
- I have become wary of interacting about this anymore. Thank you 136.56.124.125 (talk) 12:08, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
- A typical sanction in a situation where a person with a conflict of interest persists in editing an article and is being reverted would be a block for editing that article. You have been cautious in only editing the article once and after being reverted, properly discussing on Talk pages. David notMD (talk) 13:25, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
Hello again, Avemalakoff;
(I assume the post at 1:08 above was added by you from your IP address, 136.56.124.125, rather than logged in.)
It is only natural that, as someone new to Wikipedia, you were not aware of the guidelines on conflict of interest and verifiability, and that experienced editors will therefore be consistent in pointing these out to you, in their own way. But as David notMD mentioned immediately above, you have adjusted your approach and all is fine. In any case, my offer of assistance stands, per my above post at 12:33 today; I will do what I can, and will definitely let you know in due course. Feel free to communicate with me from here, using the following opening text: "Hello {{U|Pdebee}}", whenever you wish. Until then, please keep well.
With kind regards;
Managing a conflict of interest
[edit]Hello, Avemalakoff. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization, clients, or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{edit COI}} template)—don't forget to give details of reliable sources supporting your suggestions;
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest § How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam § External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicizing, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Ad Orientem (talk) 14:09, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
