Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello Bnperdue2010! While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 18:15, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:OrlandParkCollage.jpg.
This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.
If you have uploaded other derivative works, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F4 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 18:16, 26 March 2023 (UTC). If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 18:16, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

Please stop
[edit]I have reverted nearly every one of your edits because they are unsourced, and most of your photos have been removed because you downloaded them off the web and claimed they were your own. I'm cautioning you to stop adding unsourced content, particularly to biographies of living people. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 22:25, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
- Magnolia677 I'm just trying to help. You don't know how hard my life is. I have to stay inside all day. Editing Wikipedia and trying to make it better is all I have right now. I'm sorry. I just wanted to make meaningful contributions to the things I truly care about in this world. I wish you would give me some constructive advice on how to better improve my edits rather than shutting me down completely. We were all beginners once. But the thought of that seems to be beyond your comprehension. I'm sorry I'm not smart enough for you to understand. Edit: I wanted to make a collage of Joliet because it's my home. All of these south suburbs of Chicago have been my home all my life. All I want to be able to do is walk along the Des Plaines River and learn/teach about it's history like I used to. But I can't do that anymore. So I wanted people that visit the page to at least see our beautiful river, on which our city is centered on. And also, it IS known as the "City of Stone". There are beautiful stone bluffs here that I bet you've never seen before. Bnperdue2010 (talk) 23:15, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is a free content encyclopedia.
- The "free content" portion is not about payment or lack of payment to read Wikipedia. It refers to the content being freely licensed. That means that text, and more importantly here, images, must be freely licensed. Most images that you find on the Internet are copyrighted and are not under a free license and cannot be used here on Wikipedia. That is why many of your images have already been deleted. WP:Derivative works are those works based on or built on from other works. A collage is such a work, as it built from other photos. In order for such a work to be freely licensed, the component pieces must also be freely licensed. Your collages do not provide any sources for the photos used.
- The "encyclopedia" portion is about proving summarized knowledge about a topic. Part of that is having material that is verifiable. Although your personal knowledge about a topic can be very useful in contributing, those contributions must be verifiable. On Wikipedia, that is done using reliable sources such as newspapers, magazines, books, academic papers, etc. Your contributions lacked such sources.
- You are currently blocked. To be unblocked, you will need to explain how, when unblocked, you will address these issues. -- Whpq (talk) 02:22, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
- How about this... If I were able to find a way to make it downtown and take the pictures for the collage myself, would that be acceptable? Joliet is more than just one picture and a short, uninformative intro. Pictures I understand, but what I don't understand is deleting my text edits. Everything I added to the intro was 100% true and is basic, common knowledge. Joliet IS on I-55 and Historic Route 66 and it IS the largest city on the Des Plaines River. All you have to do is look at a map and read through population data from the U.S. Census. I would be more than happy to cite these if somebody here could simply explain how. @Whpq@Magnolia677 Bnperdue2010 (talk) 03:41, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Request reason:
All I have tried to do is improve Wikipedia to the best of my ability. There are two users that have been vindictively reverting almost all of my edits. It's nothing short of bullying at this point. I have asked for advice on how to better improve my edits but to no avail. Please let me know what I can do specifically. Because bettering this encyclopedia actually means a lot to me. Bnperdue2010 (talk) 23:34, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
Decline reason:
Looking at your edits, there are problems with unsourced information, and copyright. Your characterization of editors reverting you for these problems as bullying does not help. I am declining your request. PhilKnight (talk) 05:59, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Request reason:
But I've tried to ask questions on how to better source my edits!! I thought this was supposed to be a "community" where editors try to help other editors improve. This feels like a very hostile environment and I'm not the one that made it that way. I understand you don't agree with my characterizing it as bullying but no one has responded at my attempts to fix these issues and find a compromise. You know what forget it. I dont even wanna be a Wikipedia editor anymore. You guys have made it not fun. Congratulations. You ruined it for me. Hope you're all proud of yourselves for making someone else feel unintelligent and small. If that's not bullying than I dont know what is. @PhilKnight Bnperdue2010 (talk) 13:30, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
