Rollback?

[edit]

You may or may not have heard that the rollback admin tool can now be given to non-admins. As a longstanding trusted user I see no reason why you shouldn't have it, so if you want me to enable it, drop a note on my talk page. Make sure you read Wikipedia:Rollback feature thoroughly first though! (short version: it should only be used for straightforward vandalism reverts, not anything which would require explaining in an edit summary. If in doubt don't use it). Thanks for the info on Bill Harper, by the way. Oldelpaso (talk) 10:41, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent work - many thanks for expanding the article. His name cropped up in some books about tramways, and it was fascinating finding out the further bits of information about him. Who'da thunk it? Divy (talk) 11:23, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Commas

[edit]

In your opinion, commas aren't needed after dates. For other people, it's common grammar. - Dudesleeper Talk 16:56, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Joe Mallett 1916 - 2004

[edit]

Hi - just wondered if your were responsible for the wikipedia entry on Joe Mallett? If you are then I have to thank you heartily for ensuring it is so accurate - I have spoken with my nan about it (Joe's wife) and have confirmed all the dates are spot on.

Many many thanks indeed.

Chris Mallett

Jon Beswetherick is on a 1 month loan from Salisbury City to Weston-super-Mare as stated http://www.confsouth.co.uk/transfers.htm and http://www.salisburyjournal.co.uk/sport/salisburysportnews/display.var.1977544.0.craig_goes_out_on_loan.php here. Therefore his player box should not have been taken out as he is still a current member of Weston-super-Mare. Your "undo" was incorrect. GauchoDude (talk) 08:24, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Until such time as a straightforward reference can be found (if ever), I have used the information you gave me to produce an acceptable guide to verification, formatted as a reference instead of the cite tag, which is now gone. Between us, we've completed the task of expanding and referencing in this article. Let's hope for many more. Thanks and well done. Ref (chew)(do) 21:25, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tip off. I've merged the two articles. I didn't transfer the reference to Arjen Robben as I couldn't find any references (the only page that mentions both players was on wikipedia and its clones) and the two players careers are over a century apart making comparisons unlikely. josh (talk) 19:11, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Football

[edit]

Thanks for your message. No, I'm not going through them - just happened to have them come up as Random articles. Pedantic of me perhaps, but a club is singular (so's a band or group or party come to that) and it grates on my memories of being taught English grammar at school to have something so simple so wrong. I can just about bear "Tottenham Hotspur were the best team*....." and the implicit understanding that Tottenham Hotspur is its individuals, but "The club were beaten..." is a singular too far. AfD nomination of Gerry O'Brien

[edit]

I have nominated Gerry O'Brien, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gerry O'Brien. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Transwiki to a more inclusive site

[edit]

Hi Daemonic Kangaroo,

I see that you've been very active in Wikipedia, especially with regard to bios of sporting figures. As a couple of your articles are currently under review for deletion on the grounds of non-notability, I wanted to suggest that you consider transferring them to Wikipopuli, a wiki that I set up to host biographical articles without a notability requirement. Indeed, given your level of experience in the wiki world, I'd be grateful for any feedback you care to give on the site. Thanks TheYellowCabin (talk) 16:17, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New players

[edit]

Hi, I had no idea such a page existed and have now added all my new pages from February. If you want a full list of the articles I've created then see my subpage, which I'm in the process of revamping. Cheers, GiantSnowman (talk) 13:58, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I found that the height of Kevin Davies had been changed a few times since Sunday night, so I did a small amount of research. Any further information you will desire about what I made of a simple 30-second-long Google search can be found in my questions on Shakehandsman's User talk page. Intrigued to see what you make of it. Bobo. 12:22, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

[edit]
Updated DYK query On 15 February, 2008, Did you know? was updated with facts from the articles William Bambridge, and Charles Bambridge, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Re: Just curious

[edit]

First, I don't believe there is any difference between any of those things. However, of the things you allude to, the edit I made only changed <br> to <br />, and that's just something I do when I'm making other edits. I wouldn't do it just for the sake of doing it. As for the {{height}} to {{convert}} change, the {{height}} template is now deprecated and has had its functionality taken over by {{convert}}. Finally, I also changed hyphens for endashes, which is per WP:DASH. – PeeJay 14:54, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well done with your work here. My involvement was only passing and there does seem to be little info available. Thank again.Cutler (talk) 10:14, 17 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just wondering what your source is for changing Shearer's total league goals. Nickpullar explained the reason for his "correction" of it both on Shearer's talk page and here. - Dudesleeper / Talk 17:58, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note - as far as I can see, his arithmetic is wrong. If you look at the 2001-02 results at [1], Shearer did score 27 goals in total but 4 of those were cup goals; 2 vs. Ipswich & 1 each vs. Palace and Peterborough. Thus, his league goals in 2001-02 were 23, not 24. This ties up with the totals at Soccerbase and www. allfootballers.com. I was meaning to leave a note on the talk page, but family life got in the way. I'll do it straightaway. If you don't agree, I'll have a closer look at the individual match results. Cheers. 20:27, --Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 20:29, 24 February 2008 (UTC)24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Lloyd James (footballer), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Lloyd James (footballer). robwingfield «TC» 23:16, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have just made another Peer Review for Kenwyne Jones and would be delighted if you could make some comments. Thanks.  Sunderland06  20:53, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please be aware that the character "–" which I used is the same as "&ndash;". The "&ndash;" clutters up the source code and has no advantage I know of. --Jaellee (talk) 17:30, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hertfordshire Rangers

[edit]

Hi, DM. Sorry for not replying sooner, have been fairly busy of late. The second link you gave me gives the correct tale - the first link is entirely inaccurate and the third and fourth mix up Hertfordshire Rangers and West Herts, two different entities. I have added what there is in my Watford history book to the article. Cheers, HornetMike (talk) 03:15, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to bother you again, but would you mind making some comments at the Peer Review for Andy Reid. It would be much appreciated. Sunderland06  17:21, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sunderland players

I shall try my best, and I would like to thank you for helping my with the Kenwyne Jones and Andy Reid Peer Reviews. Thanks.  Sunderland06  12:27, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah the section on the Sunderland A.F.C. page looks great, and i'll be sure to pop by.  Sunderland06  14:20, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've just created Thomas Porteous (footballer) it hasn't got much info in. I was hoping that book you have might have some info in it.  Sunderland06  19:03, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hope they don't go down. The other red and whites are starting to play a little better.  Sunderland06  15:15, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nice job with the article. I don't have my reference books with me at the moment but when I get back to them in a couple of weeks I'll take a look and see what I can add. :-) --Simmo676 (talk) 13:44, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Move

[edit]

Hi! I saw that you moved Edward Wright (footballer) to Dundas Wright. Can you please show me your source, that he was refered as Dundas Wright? Thanks and kind regards Doma-w (talk) 16:52, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your answer. Yes, of course, this helps a lot! I have seen, that Edward was not the name he was commonly known. But I was pondering why you did not prefer Gordon? If you prefer Dundas I think it would be good to add some sources, because the two sources now added on his page show him as Gordon, so this does not correspond. By the way, do you have any info (date of birth/death) for the two red links in the 1912 squad of England (Walter Bailey and Samuel Sanders)? And do you have any info if "William Martin" from the same squad is linked to the right William Martin? Kind regards Doma-w (talk) 18:16, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, now I saw your new mail! Yes, I think I would like to move him to Gordon Wright (footballer). Do you want to do it or should I do it? Kind regards Doma-w (talk) 18:18, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for all your help! Good to know you as expert for questions like this! :) Kind regards Doma-w (talk) 18:42, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article titles

[edit]

There are actually two issues here. One is whether to use the term "footballer" which may be seen as a localized term (which are frowned upon) or "football player" which of course could be confused with American/Canadian football; this being an American-based website, it would be correct to use the term "soccer player" and possibly preferred for this reason. The second issue is in using the year of birth in the title -- just because it's used by a number of articles doesn't make it correct under MoS. But as I say I need to check this out. The fact we have 2 football players with the same name complicates matters. 23skidoo (talk) 12:49, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Fair enough. I've left my response there, but it seems people are more concerned with the semantics of the word football than the reason why I moved the article in the first place, so I'll abandon the issue to others to decide. 23skidoo (talk) 13:56, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
