Welcome!
I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Before getting too in-depth, you may want to read about the simplified ruleset. If you need help on how to title new articles check out the naming conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style. If you need help look at Wikipedia:Help and the FAQ , plus if you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)! There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library. Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal. And if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my user talk page.
Additional tips
Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!
- If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
- You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Five will get you the datestamp only.
- You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
- If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
- If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
- If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.
Happy Wiki-ing.

Hi Dan
user: tdmj here can u please make a Whitgiftian userbox. Reply to my talk page
Just a note.
Heyo, just noticed you around, and decided you seem interesting. I hope you find things nice and addicting. The people around here are usually nice, too, but mind some of the people that can get a bit cranky at times. Leave me a note on my talk page if you want, cos I'm a bored kid waiting to help anybody who wants it, if I can. Anyway, just leaving you a strange robot, cos I feel like it, and hope you have a good day. -Tim Rhymeless (Er...let's shimmy) 07:09, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
Images of browser windows
In response to your question about the image in the Halfbakery article, I probably just have a bigger screen than the person who made the original screenshot. I was able to get the whole site into one Firefox window. I just used GIMP to crop off the browser controls. You could do it the sticking parts together way, too. At one point I used a Firefox extension that made a screenshot of the entire website without the browser controls and without having to scroll. However, I've forgotten which one it is. If anyone finds it, can you stick it on my talk page?

Open letter to the "Whitgiftians"
Wikipedia welcomes contributors regardless of age, but it would be nice to see you actually contribute. So far most of you (with the exception of Dbmag9) seem to have been more interested in building and editing each other's userpages. If your interests go mainly in that direction, perhaps your needs would be better served by getting MySpace or LiveJournal accounts? Remember that Wikipedia is not a free host, blog, or webspace provider.
It is OK to have a Wikipedia account without editing (e.g., in order to keep a watchlist or a non-default skin). But to maintain an elaborate userpage without actually contributing to the actual encyclopedic borders on being a waste of project resources. (End of canned text. I can see from your contributions that you really do contribute to the encyclopedia, but I thought you should see what I'm sending to your classmates(?). Perhaps you could help direct their energies in a more constructive direction?) Henning Makholm 21:56, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the comment. I do try to encourage the others here to contribute, but often to no avail. The allure of posting rubbish on other people's userpages seems too great for them, I'm afraid. Daniel (☎) 23:21, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- No sweat. Ultimately you're not responsible for what they do. By the way, I seem to have hit a wrong chord with "classmates", seing how you and Tristram both put it in scare quotes in your responses. As you all are the same age and go to the same school, I speculated that you probably had classes together. Apologies if my attempt (as a non-native speaker) to express this ended up sounding strange or offensive. Henning Makholm 21:17, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- No, no it is fine. To be honest, we don't share any classes, but it was a reasonable assumption. As a non-native speaker your English is wonderful (I wouldn't have thought it foreign in the slightest). I put it in scare quotes for no particular reason, they just seemed appropriate at the time. I'm sure Tristram was anxious to dissassociate himself with me. Daniel (☎) 21:46, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Spelling on my userpage
Wow, at least two people have actually read the thing. Thanks :) Quite a while back I did actually make a pretty obvious deliberate mistake to see if anyone would fix it. They didn't, but now I've made some non-deliberate ones people have noticed! Thanks, Petros471 20:15, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

A short Esperanzial update
As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.
As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.
Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Hi! Would you consider changing your vote to support C2 instead of E? It also doesn't put "TEST" in big letters through the logo, but makes it very clear that you're on the Test Wikipedia, while still being very elegant -- replacing "The Free Encyclopedia" with "Test Wiki", and in red, too, to make it more obvious. :) —Nightstallion (?) 05:57, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Ancient Greek wikisource
Hi Daniel, I noticed that you deleted incubator:Test-ws/grc. Do you know where the Ancient Greek wikisource project can currently be found? Ferdinand II's plaque in Florence
Hello Daniel,
I see that you have both Latin and Hebrew interests. If you can read this inscription, would you like to edit the description of this wiki Commons image? (Image:Firenze-Ferdinando-II-plaque-1116.jpg; just click on the image to get there)
I took the picture in Florence, where this plaque is mounted next to the entry to some kind of institution (Istituto San Salvatore, probably very Catholic), and would love to put it to good use in an appropriate wiki article. But as I don't know either of the two languages involved, I don't know what Duke Ferdinand II (one of Medici rulers of Tuscany), and his Mom the regent, wanted to say there -- though if it was something about the Jews, it is probably nothing good. They sounds really angry in their last sentence :-)
Please just ignore this note if you don't have time.
Thanks in advance. --Vladimir ( Vmenkov 09:09, 4 November 2006 (UTC) )
- I tried, but to be honest I don't have the skill in either language to translate it properly for you. I can tell you that the Hebrew is almost certainly a Biblical quote, beginning approximately "In the name of God have mercy". I'll put it up on the Languages Reference Desk to see if anyone there knows, as it seems intriguing. Sorry. —Daniel (‽) 16:30, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
