Melbourne Meetups

I've only attended one meetup - Wikipedia:Meetup/Melbourne 2. You can check the pictures to see who fronted up. I don't think any were under 18. As far as I know there is no age limit. Why not come to the next one and have a chat to some of the other members. Cheers - Cuddy Wifter 23:49, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Helpme2

Hi,

I was wondering if it's possible to move the non-admin rollback button, on godmodelite, from Lupin's filter page to the diff page.. :|

Thx! :) --Deon555|talk 03:15, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Administrator's Userbox

Hi,

I saw that you had put {{User wikipedia/Administrator}} on your userpage. I have removed it. Please note that adding such a userbox may confuse other editors. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 05:30, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Sorry

I'm very sorry Deon. Not sure how that happened but I assure you it wasn't intentional. Thanks for pointing it out to me. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 04:49, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Deon, please consider withdrawing your RfA. You can resubmit it when you have more experience and are more known in the community. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 05:04, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
No, no, people are forgiving. Lots of current administrators had unsuccessful RfAs. Some had multiple tries before they finally got there. The problem is you don't have many edits so people don't know you. You just need to take that on board, stick with it and try again down the track when people know you better. The admin tag thing can easily be written off as a newbie-ish mistake if you decide to stay and make a good contribution. By the way, are you Australian? I just noticed Cuddy Wifter's comment above about Melbourne meet-ups. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 05:18, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Please withdraw before the opposes continue. I would hate to see this discourage you from continuing to make excellent contributions to the project. — Deckiller 05:22, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

To add to the good advice above, please reconsider your decision to quit Wikipedia. As Deckiller says, you have made some very good contributions. We'd hate to loose you. People are opposing your RfA because we haven't seen enough of your work to know if you'd be a good admin. Being an administrator is not the be all and end all of being on Wikipedia. You can do most of the useful work here, both contributing to articles and fighting vandalism, without having the admin bit.

No one here [1] hates you, we just cannot judge you on a handful of edits. The comment by Ambuj Saxena does not doom a future RfA, as Sarah Ewart points out plenty of people fail at the first attempt and later become admins. Please reconsider. Gwernol 05:37, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Hates you? No, don't think "everyone" does

Per your recent userbox addition: I don't think everybody hates you. I don't hate you (though I admittedly don't know you very well), and I'm part of "everyone" so "everyone" doesn't hate you. =) I suspect you're a little upset about your RfA. I wouldn't call your rejection "hate". You're just a little underexperienced. Life is too short to hate. Just keep editing and things will work out. -- Gogo Dodo 05:22, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Actually nobody hates you. I had to oppose as I found you inexperienced for adminship. If you keep up the good work, and don't "mess around" :), your RfA will succeed if you re-apply in 3 months. -- mean old Abjuj (or watevr) 05:32, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Re your message: I'm glad that you decided to remove that userbox, though your second revision was pretty funny. =) See you around. -- Gogo Dodo 20:27, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Wannabe friends

Hi,

Introducing:The fastest way to friendship

Would you like to be friends with me. As a token, have this nice dessert. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 05:38, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Don't worry if your job is small, and rewards are few;
Remember that the mighty oak, was once a nut like you.
Sorry about the pun, but I meant to lift your spirits. Nobody enters the wiki-world as a pro. Even I was once a new-bie. Experience is a cure-all tonic. — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 05:44, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Your edit to 2006

Hi Pburka,
I have partly reverted your edit to "Remove minor events" in 2006. I hardly see winning the Miss Universe competition to be minor. Feel free to comment here, and click Send me a message on Wikipedia. Thanks--Deon555|talk 00:24, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi Deon,
I really do feel that it is a minor event. There are probably a dozen international pageants like this (e.g. Miss World, NABBA Mr. Universe), Additionally, the Miss Universe contest is an annual event. That there was a winner in 2006 is quite predictable and there is little which makes this winner stand out from previous winners. Pburka 00:44, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

My reversion in Sexual Intercourse

My edit was not vandalism, I was reverting further because the current page contained vandalism. ~ Butros (Talk) 00:46, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Sorry my computers a bit laggy today :). Nothing Intended. Thanks for letting me know.--Deon555|talk 00:48, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

No particular problem, but his bridge achievements (not so big compared with his politics achievements, and with other people's from Category:British bridge players) are listed in the article and he's put in the category. Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Deon555, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC Tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Re:t3 to Sheepyman

This user re-created for the fourth time the page Islamic Sheep (hopefully when the page is deleted this time, it will be protected against re-creation). Though this may not be the same account with which he/she created the articles on the previous instances, it seems clear that his/her edits are repetitively unconstructive. Islamic Sheep is a flagrant violation of Wikipedia's NPOV policy. I would use the blatantvandal template, but this is a more specialized one for the creation of inappropriate pages. Therefore, I feel a t3 is warranted in this case. Fabricationary 00:08, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Nonsense edits by User:71.102.76.166

Ummm... I think there is some misunderstanding here. My reading of the contribution history shows that the anon has flagged these articles for deletion, not created them. - Ta bu shi da yu 09:07, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Wow, Deon. I know you genuinely believed the IP/Lucky was up to no good, but I think you should remember, WP:BITE and WP:CIVIL. Some of our best editors are IPs and it's not good to alienate them with such unnecessarily overly aggressive comments. Just my two cents. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 09:27, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Please don't feel bad about it. I think everyone knows that you're very enthusiastic and acting in complete good faith, it's just something to keep in mind in future. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 09:49, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Hey, it's cool :-) I'm actually very grateful that you are so diligent in catching those edits - I never have the time or patience to watch this part of the site! Thanks for the barnstar, btw. - Ta bu shi da yu 13:20, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

I see what the problem was. Thanks for your diligence and thanks to some of these other editors for their assistance as well. A lot of those stubs (if you can call them stubs) remain, but here's hoping they'll get cleaned up. See you 'round the Internet. 71.102.76.166 16:04, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

No probs. I do think you're doing very well and I'm glad you decided to stick around. Most people who vote on RfA like to see candidates with a good spread of edits across talk, the mainspace and the WP space, so if you're still hoping to try another RfA down the track, I think it would be good to get established in those areas. And yeah, I agree, you should take the problems with VP as a sign! :) Sarah Ewart (Talk) 16:20, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Sadly, it looks from the discussion on the mediation page as though the other interested party (or a sock, or just maybe a different, anonymous, user) is unhappy about the fact that in my talk page you (Deon555) gave a personal opinion – despite the fact that you quickly realised this might be inappropriate and struck it out. I think you did the right thing by not erasing it completely, and I'm personally happy for you to continue as mediator; however, I wonder if you'd agree that given this event, it might smooth things somewhat if a different mediator took over? Having said that, the latest outpouring on the Brighton talk page is very difficult to treat as "sincere" and I think this may be slipping from mediation-required to something else. – Kieran T (talk | contribs) 17:05, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Nice one, Deon. I just did a couple of minor things like disambiged "Thornbury" and added a "see also" section. When you link to most Australian suburbs, you need to write it like this [[Thornbury, Victoria|Thornbury]] otherwise the link will go to either a disambig page or to a different place of the same name (often in the US or the UK). You don't need to do this with capital cities, though. Also, on the subject of Australian projects, there's also this one: Wikipedia:WikiProject Melbourne. Thanks again for the quick feedback. Newyorkbrad 03:19, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

The Resilient Barnstar
This barnstar is awarded to Deon for maturely learning his from mistakes, working hard to become a better editor, cleaning up after vandals and patiently trying to help newbies. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 07:16, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Ha ha! No worries. I thought a few days ago you deserved one for your RC work and dealing with the newbies and vandals, but I was a bit slow getting around to it. :) Sarah Ewart (Talk) 07:28, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

No, I didn't know about the bot, but that sounds like a great project. Let me know how it goes! Sarah Ewart (Talk) 08:54, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Well since my python skills are umm how can i put this.. non-existent? Eagle_101, me and a few other wikipedians have turned it into a Wikiproject :) Wikipedia:WikiProject_AfD_closing. --Deon555|talk|e|Review Me! :D 12:10, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
That looks great. I signed up for it. Hey Deon, do you mind if I make a suggestion about your signature? I reckon the "talk" part of it should go straight to your talk page. I use pop-ups myself and go straight to talk pages when I want to message someone, so it doesn't actually bother me. But I think for people without pop-ups it might be a bit annoying going to that contact page each time. Also, from the contact page, the only option for leaving you a talk page comment is the link which opens up a new comment window. If someone is wanting to add to a current section or just read your page, it could get really annoying. Specially if they're having a back-and-forth conversation with you. Just a thought.
Also, are you be interested in going to a Wikimedia function in Melbourne? Angela Beesley has offered Melbourne people free tickets to go to a function that she is speaking at on the evening of August 31. She will be talking about "Future Directions for Free Content." It's at the The Churchill Club and tickets normally cost $66. I'll probably be working that night, so I don't think I'll be able to go, but I just thought I'd let you know. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 12:55, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
P.S. You should make a barnstar section on your user page and move your barnstar over there! Sarah Ewart (Talk) 12:57, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
P.P.S. Congrats on reaching 1000 edits. The first 1000 are the hardest, I think. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 12:59, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes, that's quite likely. Mount Dandenong, Victoria to be specific. You may also know Shan and Cain. If you feel enthusiastic, do add to St. Joseph's College, Melbourne as well :D. See you around. Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 09:26, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

What nonsense?

Good grief...this is why I left the project. I used to edit as "Lucky 6.9." I was once an administrator. I had 20,000 edits and six features to my credit and left this project precisely over the attitudes I'm encountering here and asked to be de-adminned to prevent the temptation. I was thinking of perhaps returning; I can see that little has changed here. You would do well to read the no personal attacks section. 71.102.76.166 07:05, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

No problem. You want proof? Check (a) my signature and (b) my contributions. Lucky 6.9 07:23, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

After rereading your comment, I'd like to add (c): I didn't write the stubs. I tagged them as a speedy under the proper criterion since I no longer have administrative rights per my own request. I was tempted to return and thought a little bit of RC patrolling might be a nice way to start. The temptation has gon away, believe me. - Lucky 6.9 07:27, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Deon555, here's a good lesson in AGF: Lucky 6.9's edit counts [3] (over 20,000) and admin resignation [4] (February 2006). I'm sure he'll have some good advice for you. Tyrenius 11:42, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Pholcodine

Thanks for nothing. I made major changes to the page overall if you look at the previous revivsion, and was just testing the different pixel sizes for the picture. Think before you revert please. IQ: 132-145 last time i checked (2003)? I think not. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Javsav (talkcontribs).

Ok, sorry. My Bad.

Open proxies

If you know about such things, I would be grateful for a mini tutorial if you have the time. Open proxies can be blocked indefinitely, unlike other IPs, but how do you tell if it is an open proxy? Thanks. Tyrenius 11:29, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Missed message

I was just archiving some messages on my talk page and realised that I missed your reply about the Melbourne thing. I must have got other new messages at the same time and not noticed yours. Anyway, I had NO idea that you were under 18! I figured you would have been in your early 20s! You seem very mature. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 10:29, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

OMG totally shocked!!! I had no clue at all! Sarah Ewart (Talk) 01:26, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi Deon555

I recommend a bare minimum of 3000 edits, preferably 5000. At the moment you still come across as too impatient, which is not a good thing. The longer you wait between RfAs the more the community likes it. Restraint is always valued. Wait 3 months after an RfA. How much difference does such a small amount of time matter really.

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.
