Safety of journalists

[edit]

We do have an entire article on that UN-report. Also please do not remove sourced content w/o a good reason. Thanks.Kleuske (talk) Kleuske (talk) 12:58, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Kleuske,
I did not delete the part about the UN report but the one about the Observatory of killed journalist. I did that for several reasons. The first one is because the page need to be cleaned and I see that the contribution related to the Observatory had been add by an user who is suspected to undisclosed link with the subject. Also the contribution was not respecting the "encyclopedic tone", it was more close from the promotional content than from the encyclopedic content. What we should do with that case ? Have you some advice ?Thanks. Emma Rieux (talk) 13:23, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You suspecting something, is not a good reason to delete sourced content. Also, if you think something has a non-encyclopedic tone, you improve that. I am usually quite strong on promotional material, but I utterly fail to see it in that article. In short, your contribution was not an improvement. Kleuske (talk) 13:28, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello,
I think that you misunderstood my approach. I'm not the at the origin of the suspicion. If you look at the top of the page, there is an alert about one of the contribution which has been done by an user who is suspected by the platform (not by me) to have undisclosed link with the subject. For my part I just want to clean this page with the indication and for that I based my work on messages posted at the top of the page. If deleting the part written by this user is not the right solution to clean the page, I will be really grateful if you can give me tips to clean the page properly. Thanks. Cleaning/ updating the page about the safety of journalists

[edit]

Hello,

In view of the need to clean up the page of the safety of journalists, I think it would be appropriate to update the figures and graphs used on the page. To do this, I'd like to update one of the very first paragraphs on the page relating to the murder of journalists, as well as the graphic that accompanies the paragraph. The figures used are those from UNESCO's report from 2016/2017, in the meantime new reports with updated figures have been published (namely the global report 2021/2022 about the World trends in freedom of expression and media development and also Director-General's report about the safety of journalists and the danger of the impunity). I would therefore like to replace the existing paragraph with one similar in style and in the arguments put forward but with more recent data. Below is an example of the replacement text. Thank you

Between 2016 and 2020, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay condemned the deaths of 400 journalists[1]. A downward trend is observed compared to the period from 2012 to 2016, when the Director-General of UNESCO condemned the death of 530 journalists, which is equivalent to an average of two death per week[2]. In 2021, 55 killings of journalists were recorded, this is the lowest number recorded by the Director-General of UNESCO in 14 years[3]. In 2020, most of the murders committed against journalists took place in a context other than that of an armed conflict, representing 61% of the murders of journalists of the year. The opposite trend was observed for the year 2016, where 50% of killings took place in countries in countries plagued by armed conflict[4].

[2] The data on the killings of journalists correspond to the condemnations by the Director-General of UNESCO, which follow Resolution 29 adopted by the 29th session of the General Conference. Each year, the Director-General of UNESCO sends requests to Member States to inform the organization of the status of ongoing investigations into the murders of journalists for which the Director-General has made public statements. UNESCO’s statistics on impunity are based on these data, published every two years in the Director-General’s report to the IPDC Intergovernmental Council and, in turn, in the Report on Global Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development.
