Cover Versions

Cover versions don't get separate articles on WP. Well done. I have a few more that need doing, is it worth running a list? Richhoncho (talk) 08:24, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Ho Hum, I have reduced the widdy list and added a second list. Richhoncho (talk) 19:17, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
And yet more good work, I will add a few more later that have been linked to the coverversions discussion but have already been merged. That should establish a pretty good precedent that cover versions don't get separate articles. Now to emphasis this, what we really need is a new category Category:Redirects from cover versions, probably a hidden category and I think we have established WP procedure once and for all. What say you? Feel free to answer here or back at my talkpage. Richhoncho (talk) 15:31, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
Sorry for delayed response - thanks, I will continue to add to the list as I come across them, and I'll also keep merging and crossing stuff off the list. I see you've been adding that hidden category already? That works for me, I'll begin using it. Perhaps we can remind some users who participated in the past conversation that it still exists and there is cleanup work to be done? - eo (talk) 13:58, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
No probs. The category I am adding is an existing category which I thought appropriate. I'd be more careful before creating a new cat. Am still working on a list of already merged songs. Richhoncho (talk) 14:18, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

versions de couverture

I would merge different versions (a look at the tiddly-widdly list will confirm my opinion) with the original version being the article name - doesn't create any search problems because there will be a redirect anyway. Also, I would list different versions in chronological order which avoids not only WP:OPINION and My band is more important than that band arguments. Do you concur? --Richhoncho (talk) 13:37, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Yes and yes. - eo (talk) 13:58, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

No, this is not an acceptable link. First, readers should not have to browse thru 10 or 15 or 20 pages to "find" the text you're talking about. What you've put there is a photo gallery. And again, in the English-language Wikipedia, citations should be from sources that are in the English language. - eo (talk) 02:50, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

There is no rule against it, and Wikipedia sources can accept any language. As an example, references on the Oricon, in Japanese. There is no problem of walking a few pictures.--ΛΛLIYΛH (talk) 17:03, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

Eo, plz it's been confirmed

I just gave out 2 sources for fame, chris browns new album, and in a radio interview Chris Brown confirmed it was called FAME. The title was even tattooed on his arm! DO U WANT MORE SOURCES? FAME is reallly confirmed. I know its unreleased but its confirmed! I have more sources. The singles "Yeah 3x" and "Calypso" were confirmed, too. I saw it with my own eyes. Come on, plz! (RealityShowsRock (talk) 12:42, 18 September 2010 (UTC))

PS I will jot down more sources after doing research...

The problem here is it violating WP:NALBUM and WP:DISCOG. I understand your enthusiasm, but we cannot rely on blogs or fan sites for stuff like this. Things that work are: announcements on the artist's official website, confirmation by record label (or on the label's website or calendar of upcoming releases), an official press release (in which case you would see it reported in trade sources such as Billboard, etc.), coverage of the release by third-party sources. Since I have now shown you subpage creation, this is a perfect example for you to use one. If you want to begin the article for the new album you may create and use your subpage to begin the new article. Here you can format it, add the sources as you get them, etc., and invite others to contribute. Then, once the release is confirmed and notable per a consensus, you can move the contents of your subpage to a "real" article page. But until you have enough reliable sources, the unreleased material should stay off the discography page. - eo (talk) 14:06, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

I researched and I saw a USA TODAY link on Yeah 3x. USA today isnt a blog right? (RealityShowsRock (talk) 14:19, 18 September 2010 (UTC))

USA Today is good, yes. And just a heads-up: many of these "upcoming album" articles end up being nominated at WP:AfD and redirected/deleted because fans just want to rush to be the "first" to post stuff and create articles. This almost never works. Patience almost always pays off in situations like this. If you come to the table with an already-created, sourced, well-written, non-stub article, chances are others will be much more willing to let it remain in place. Articles with little or no credible information and/or a fansite-vibe or "here's the latest news on Chris Brown's album!" tone just get hosed. I'd start, perhaps, with a small mention, perhaps a sentence or two in Brown's artist page, noting that an album is in the works. Then hold off on the addition to the discography unless sources become obvious and overwhelming. - eo (talk) 14:32, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Okay, but I'm saying now they have a couple MTV.com links, too. So I think it's overwhelming quite a bit. (RealityShowsRock (talk) 19:25, 18 September 2010 (UTC))

Bubbling Under

Hi Eric, I noticed that in the past you have helped users with locating the Bubbling Under peaks of some songs. This link shows that this song by Lady Gaga and Elton John charted on the Bubbling Under chart, but as I do not have a billboard.biz account, I cannot access its peak. If you could help me out, I would greatly appreciate it so that I can add the info to Lady Gaga discography. Much thanks in advance! –Chase (talk) 02:13, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Thank you so much! –Chase (talk) 19:59, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Eric would you take a look at the updated version of the article and comment about how it looks? Thanks mate. — Legolas (talk2me) 11:57, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Done! Overall this looks excellent, there were just some minor things I fixed. I removed the Rose Royce image however - that looks to be one for an album cover, not the real single cover. Amazon fucked that up. - eo (talk) 12:16, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
Oh is it? Any idea what is the single cover? If you find it, can you upload over that image? — Legolas (talk2me) 12:24, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks a lot Eric. That was really helpful. I might ask of a small favour. Since you have access to the billboard.biz, cna you find out if the LDLHA Madonna version debuted at 6 on the Bubbling Under chart. Legolas (talk2me) 13:45, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

hey, could you have a look at the above users contribs cuz he's constantly changing things about, formatting wise, despite tons of warnings from various people (you included) and blockings from you. thanks. oh and with cece peniston, i'd be tempted to change it and point him/her in the direction of wp:discog and some fl's to see how things are done. otherwise they'd think that having flags and incorrect formatting, chart names etc for discogs is ok, better to teach them proper ways early if they're new to wiki. Mister sparky (talk) 16:18, 23 September 2010 (UTC)

CCP

Peniston's "Finally '97" ain't a cover version, it is a new recording of the same artist. Once such song succesfully charts it can appear in a new article as well if preferred. - —Preceding unsigned comment added by Benuliak (talkcontribs) 14:04, 23 September 2010

Hi Eric. About the size of the certifications... when there are so many certifications is better to put them in small, because it may look messy in normal size font. Or at least I was told that. Like Michael Jackson albums discography (certifications and sales). I added this to WP:DISCOG. By the way I saw you are top contributor on this article (via toolserver). I'm trying to make the article a featured list . I reciently nominated it but failed because I'm having trouble with the references and the lead. I'm not a pro on the subject so it would rock if you can help with that.--Neo139 (talk) 21:04, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

No problem - I remove the small on so many discographies its almost a habit at this point. I thought maybe LP's had too many and may get switched back, which is fine; they have a lot. Meanwhile I'll take a look at the lead. What is your problem with the references? - eo (talk) 21:05, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Apparently the references are a mess. I'm fixing them and put them like this but I'm not sure what to put in publisher in cite web tag. I'll do all I can and then ask these guys to review it. I can't fix the lead by myself because my english is not enough to do it --Neo139 (talk) 21:37, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for contact me. I was AFK the whole week (physics exam). Anyway, I post a message on MatthewGoodfan101 talk page (see here). Lets see if he calms down. (Last edit he did screw the tables lol). I think the solution to all this is to find an absolute consensus for which charts select for each section though a mathematical formula. So if someone start trolling for his country to be included, we can let the math decide ^^ That is why I just created this. Also please vote in the link or dont link poll. Its an easy and simple thing that need speedy consensus. About Matthew, this are the type of users that we don't have to block, he wants to help but he doesn't know much about discussion before editing and needs to read a bit of WP:HELP. It would be a shame if he gets blocked for this --Neo139 (talk) 00:47, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Source granting

Hello, do you remember a while ago when we brought an issue up about Mariah Journal being a fan-site and now we can use it as a source for certain things? How did it come about that it was granted? I can't remember where to take it. Jayy008 (talk) 13:16, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

Invitation to comment: Formatting changes to WP:DISCOGSTYLE.

Hello, Eric. I know you're at least somewhat aware of these discussions, but I want to solicit your comment before we start changing discogs wp-wide. And trust me, the executive summary I'm clogging your talk page with here is much shorter than all the rest of what's gone before.

Quick summary: Over at the Talk page for WP:WikiProject Discographies/style, there's been quite a bit of (at times tedious and technical) discussion about the formatting of discographies. Although WikiProject Discographies/style hopes to be part of the Manual of Style some day, it does not, currently, conform to WP:ACCESS, itself a part of the MoS. This is a problem because articles which conform to the WikiProject Discographies/style ought not be acceptable for promotion to FA or FL status, since they don't conform to the MoS.

After much discussion at Accessibility issues, followed by what was meant to be a conclusion at Time to update, we would be ready to actively address the problem, with discographies eventually being reformatted to appear as currently shown here (already changed from its earlier form). Column order and formatting would be noticeably changed, chart headings would typically be bigger, a few other differences in the coding would be made.

The only hold-up (as far as we know) is lack of wider consensus; I think too few people have participated and I'd like to see more editors register their opinion (be it support or criticism) before we move ahead with a rather significant change. (At the very least, you may consider this fair warning.) Your comment is welcome at Are we ready to apply this updated guideline?. Thanks. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 20:18, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Janet Jackson discography

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I'm in the process of cleaning up this page.., (Adding sources, putting correct numbers, etc.) and splitting it as well. Ga Be 19 19:33, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

I put the tags on the article. Most all of the article is fine, but the lead is indeed unattractive, and I believe it needs to be rewritten, cleaned up, and wikified. I also believe that the lead possibly contains trivia. Nowyouseemetalk2me 21:50, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

OK then - wasn't sure of the who or why they were placed there - I'll review the lead again and redo what is necessary. Care to help me with it? - eo (talk) 11:02, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

Oh sorry, I only ask for your help.

  • I think I do a good job for Wikipedia. I rephrased the discography of Aaliyah, with all the right references, you can check.
  • I thought the first week sales of Age Is not Nothing But a Number "and" One in a Million. In addition to reformulating these articles.
  • I thought the 'End of year charts' of One in a Million and Aaliyah, plus the albums of Janet (All For You, Damita Jo, 20YO, Discipline and janet.)
  • I thought the sales of Aaliyah (32 million albums).
  • I attended all the discussions about me, as in the Discography Aaliyah, Aaliyah Article)
  • I inserted the sales in the discography of albums and Monica and Brandy.
  • I'm fixing up the discography Toni Braxton, who was without references.
  • Mya's albums and Discography.
  • Ultimate Aaliyah, I Care 4 U.
  • Blackground Records
  • Mos Def discography.
  • Ciara discography

I would love to stay in Wikipedia.--ΛΛLIYΛH (talk) 18:13, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

Rap-Up

Question: is the website of Rap-Up considered a reliable source? I know it's a magazine (which I have never seen in stores, but maybe they don't sell it in Canada), but its website makes it seem as if it's primarily a blog-like website that seems more focused on and covers every single rap and hip hop leak, new track, and album. I never use it for my additions, but I don't know if I should be telling IPs that it isn't a reliable source or not. What do you think? Yves (talk) 02:42, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for delayed response, but personally i dont find this site to be reliable at all. Per comments Ive seen from other editors, Rap-Up is frequently wrong about stuff, so I would avoid it. At least I always do. - eo (talk) 22:53, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
That's okay; thanks for the reply! I guess my question is, "Should I be removing content if its most reliable source seems to be Rap-Up?" And, "Would I be able use the Template:uw-unsourced1 templates on talk pages of users who add with Rap-Up as a source?" Yves (talk) 23:28, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
Sigh, I guess I would look at the entire article as a whole and see how much of the article is based on Rap-Up. At the very least I'd place a cleanup tag on the article and try to get something started on the talk page before removing tons of info. If it's blatantly an all-rumor article you may even want to consider taking it to WP:AfD. Getting a consensus from other editors wouldn't hurt, and FYI, a lot of tags can be found here: Wikipedia:Template messages. - eo (talk) 11:10, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Moving a page

Hi. Can you help me move Jack Starr (blues guitarist) to Jack Starr. I can't because there was already an unknown guitarist on the Jack Starr article. I moved that one to Jack Starr (Texas guitarist). The reason I did this is because there is no point of having a two line stub in the Jack Starr article about a probably non-notable 60's guitarist when people that search for jack starr are looking for the metal one (Jack Starr (blues guitarist)). Also 99% of the articles linking to Jack Starr refereed to the blues one. I have fixed this 1% that didn't so there will be no problems with the move. Thanks --Neo139 (talk) 21:25, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

the Shame Shame Shame chart entry was put in Peniston discography long ago I reconstructed the article, and as I couldn't find any further reference as for this only song, I was wondering where it comes from. However, it is one of the most successfull track she released during the last decade. Thank u for your time and work (m)anyway. Uzerakount (talk) 22:07, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
Just wanted to let you know that as for singles, I am done with all the credits/personnel (with exception of only three songs "Keep on Walkin' 2008 (EP Live), I'm in the Mood and Somebody Else's Guy), which I need to either check yet, or only complete. So if there is anybody please who could correct the overall "look" of credits, I will appreciate it. After a break I will hopefully complete also credits/personnel for Peniston's albums. At the moment I am really worn out myself... As for the charts, only Shame Shame Shame needs to be confirmed as discussed yesterday, and regarding the rest - all information was verified in detail. I was widely discussing the Peniston's milestones also with her producers, and was lucky to receive on my way also by now unreleased demos of her unfinished recordings from 2007 (all samples are provided at CCP discography main article). Thanks for help, learned heaps for sure, but it was a damn hard job, so i just hope it will be of some use. As I am not a native english speaker, would be appreciated as well if somebody checked also grammar in all CCP articles. Be well. Uzerakount (talk) 17:02, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

And the reason it wasn't sourced directly to the single was because the link redirects to the album. –Chase (talk / contribs) 18:58, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
Still does not prove that its a single. Looks to me like a pre-order teaser before the album is released - like a promotional tool, not a proper single release. This should be sourced by a record label's website, or Minaj's official site, not one online music retailer (iTunes). Even the "cover" shown is the album's not one specific to the song. Regardless, it fails WP:NSONG, in my opinion. I'd hold off on this one. - eo (talk) 20:05, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

Hey, I need you to do something about this page. Can you put a semi-protection on it, because it's been repeatedly vandalized by some IP users. They keep altering the certifications for both albums and I left a private note warning them to stop and to obey the source, but they won't stop and won't listen because they keep ignoring the private note. Please put a semi-protection on that discography so that the stupid IP vandals will no longer trouble it, Thanks. Hometown Kid (talk) 09:12, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Wykonawcy

Possible, but there isn't enough data to act on. His chart position was good, just poorly referenced.—Kww(talk) 17:57, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Actually, he originally re-instated a "2" when it should have been "72", which he then corrected. - eo (talk) 17:58, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Nice. Thanks. - eo (talk) 20:53, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

Far East Movement

Please stop removing references to Dubstep and Grime as musical influences for the far east movement. The beat structure and bpm speed at which the instrumental played indicates a Grime and Dubstep influence. Well known other hip hop artists from the US like P Diddy/Lil Jon have long been aware of this British Sub Genre and have borrowed instrumental elements for their own music. It is not a stretch of the imagination to imagine far east movement did the same... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nograviti (talkcontribs) 10:07, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) This "stretch of imagination" is considered original research, which is not allowed on Wikipedia. Genres are often subject to dispute, so reliable sourcing is necessary to avoid genre warring. Yves (talk) 10:15, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
Err guys? The only edit I ever made to that article was this one: [2]. You're confusing me with someone else. - eo (talk) 15:54, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

I need you to put a semi-protection on that page also, some pesky IP vandals are messing around on it and not obeying the sources provide, plus they're ignoring the private note I left to warn them. Hometown Kid (talk) 21:35, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Rodolfo Trotter

Just wondering, have you come across Rodolfo Trotter (talk · contribs)? The user's edits come across very TrEeMaNsHoE-ish to me. — ξxplicit 03:38, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Yes, to me also. Either that or CiaraFan4Ever. I'd ask Kww or bring this to checkuser ASAP. - eo (talk) 15:12, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
