If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Jennifer Mercieca requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. SoWhy 12:19, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm very sorry that you took time to write an article which now faces deletion, although there should have been a red banner on the page to inform you about the previous deletion, was there not? I will inquire whether someone can find a solution to tag articles in the requested articles pages with a notice that they have previously been deleted. I hope this does not stop you from contributing since there are so many truly notable subjects that still need to be written about. If you need further inspiration and like to write about other accomplished women, Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red has a large list of resources on that topic. You can also feel free to contact me at any time if you need some help. Regards SoWhy 13:41, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome!

What section did you find Jennifer Mercieca in at WikiProject Requested articles? I'll remove it post-haste. –MJLTalk 14:32, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@MJL: FetalFlaw already did [1]. Regards SoWhy 15:30, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@SoWhy: [Thank you for the ping] Oh, gotcha!
FetalFlaw, my apologies to you for your first article ending up like this. I know this might be crushing, and if Cod Island turned that way for me I'd probably had given up by now. If there is anything I can do for you, please let me know. MJLTalk 15:48, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@MJL: Thank you for being polite and kind. I am only slightly discouraged, and intend to keep at contributing to Wikipedia. Right now I dont think I need anything, but if I feel I need a jungle guide, I guess I can turn to you? FetalFlaw (talk) 07:37, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I left you a message at Talk:Jennifer_Mercieca#Previously_deleted. --kingboyk (talk) 18:36, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kingboyk: I will go there now. Thanks. FetalFlaw (talk) 07:37, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @MJL:, It looks like I already need your help. The page got another speedy deletion tag. I thought the next deletion was going to be a discussion among editors. I am not really so committed to this page, but I would like to learn how all this works, and right now I am not understanding this at all. Thanks. FetalFlaw (talk) 08:41, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the second tag. Once a speedy request has been declined, re-tagging is generally not allowed, which I told the tagging editor. If you have further questions, feel free to ask. Regards SoWhy 09:01, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@SoWhy and MJL:. Maybe I'm starting to get it. Nothing is perfect, and especially a crowd-sourced experiment like Wikipedia can have a lot of bumps along the way. Thanks for taking the time to clarify. FetalFlaw (talk) 10:29, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
A very accurate summary indeed. Fortunately, there are a lot of people willing to help out whenever you have questions. After all, we all had to start at some point (although I can barely remember when that was) Regards SoWhy 10:41, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
[Thank you for the ping] If it wasn't obvious, SoWhy is really experienced at this. I actually only got started this January. SoWhy actually participates in a program to "adopt" new users. I'm just with the Welcoming Committee and can provide you referrals to good resources, but you can't get much better than SoWhy!! ;D –MJLTalk 19:26, 30 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Jennifer Mercieca for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Jennifer Mercieca is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jennifer Mercieca (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. GirthSummit (blether) 00:18, 3 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I just wanted to drop you a note that I don't think you did anything wrong by creating this article, and I don't want my nomination to discourage you from editing; however, nothing seems to have changed with regard to the subject's notability since the last discussion, and so I believe that the previous consensus should stand until something happens to change that.
By the way, I saw the question on your userpage - in answer to that, as you've already discovered (!), people communicate with you here on your talk page. It would be very unusual for anyone else to edit your userpage - that's just your space to tell everyone a bit about yourself (if you want to - it's totally optional). If you click on my signature, or that of any of the other people who have left you messages here, you'll see some examples of the sorts of things people do. Hope that's helpful, cheers GirthSummit (blether) 00:22, 3 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Girth Summit: Thanks for softening the blow of the likely upcoming deletion. I am not taking the deletion discussion personally, due mostly to how polite and respectful everyone has been on this issue. I hope this experience will help me pick better candidates to create articles about. Is there a way to check if an article I am considering creating has already written but deleted? Like a list or something? It seems like it would be efficient that when an editor checks to see if an article is worthy of Wikipedia, there should be some way of knowing it has already been tried and rejected. Am I allowed to defend the article I wrote on the deletion discussion page? I still think she is notable enough for Wikipedia, and I do see I am not alone. Her articles and interviews are all over the internet. She seems to be important in this narrow field of rhetoric and propaganda. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to welcome me into the world of Wikipedia editing. FetalFlaw (talk) 08:38, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Simply key the name of the subject you want to create into the search bay. For example, I recently participated in the AfD discussion on "P. Nathan Toomey". Keying that into the search bar brings up a page with his name as the 1st hit, in red ink. click the redlinked name and you find a link to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/P. Nathan Toomey. Before creating pages, I run 2 or 3 possible names through this sort of search. Cheers.E.M.Gregory (talk) 13:59, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You are definitely allowed to participate in the discussion. Don't just vote - make an argument based on our notability guidelines. Most editors seem to think the closest she comes to notability is via WP:NAUTHOR, so you should read that carefully then make your case.
E.M.Gregory has explained well how to do a check to see whether a page has existed before. In terms of checking whether a subject is notable, the best thing to do before you start writing is to look for sources, and ask yourself whether you have enough to meet one of the notability criteria - the most basic one is WP:GNG. Essentially, if you can find a couple of independent, secondary reliable sources that give significant coverage to the subject, then it's probably notable and worth writing about. One of the issues with Jennifer Mercieca is that the sources aren't about her - she's mentioned, and interviewed, in articles about something else, but nobody independent has written much about her. (Also some of them are written by her, so they're not independent.) That's why people are looking at notability under the NAUTHOR guidelines, which allow for authors whose work has been subject to multiple reviews. A barnstar for you!

[edit]
The Resilient Barnstar
For this comment at the AFD for your very first article. It shows a lot of maturity and is certainly worthy of this barnstar.

You've certainly gone through a trial-by-fire. Please, don't ever be discouraged and continue to write unique and interesting articles! :D –MJLTalk 06:56, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • @MJL:Thanks. I might take a bit of a break from Wiki editing. It was not my intention to put this much time in. But I will be back. This is certainly interesting, and I appreciate all your encouragement. FetalFlaw (talk) 07:02, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
[Thank you for the ping] Of course! The Wikibreak is certainly much deserved on your end. I've only written a handful of articles, but I'm pretty dang confident if one was nominated for deletion as quickly as it happened for you.. let's just say I'd be sobbing for an awfully long time. If you want, you are always free to use Special:Export to save a personal copy of it (even with attribution history!) just as a keepsake. Thank you for being so strong throughout this process despite some of the unintentional WP:BITE-y behavior shown your way. MJLTalk 07:10, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'd also like to note that I am sorry if this process has become discouraging. Please believe me, this is not the typical way of things - if you want any help or advice with future articles, I'd be more than happy to lend a hand. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 07:34, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Vessel Orchestra

[edit]

I see from your talk page you're on a bit of a hiatus; when you get back I'd like to know your thoughts about adding images to Vessel Orchestra (I started a discussion on its Talk page, feel free to respond there when you're back). Thanks for being WP:BOLD and creating that article, by the way :) Umimmak (talk) 13:33, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Jean Donaldson

[edit]

Hello FetalFlaw,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Jean Donaldson for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly indicate why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!
