Talk:Maxima and minima

Figure for the above lookin' very good, Freiddy. My thanks. Would it be practical to put the figure in the positive (+, +, +) 3-D quadrant like the 4th Fig. down in (expandable here by clicking the boxes in tha caption):

An example of how indifference curves are obtained as the level curves of a utility function

, which appears in indifference curve at the top right side? Thanks again. Thomasmeeks 14:35, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

I will try to do that.

The whole nine yards. No need to even mention paraboloid, since use here is for mazimum. Tweaks I'm sorry I didn't think of earlier that might help (but might be too time consuming) are:

  • eliminating all edges except the 3 from the origin (simplifying visually)
  • labelling the origin (near corner) as 0
  • labelling the vertical axis from the origin as z atop that axis
  • having a separate figure without the constraint (which may get in way of labelling z axis anyhow), especially with your nice red bull's eye maximum.

Both figures in the article would be useful. (I'd at least reference them in indifference curve article among others. Hope someone would know how to downsize for the article (I could get Wiki help). Thank you. Thomasmeeks 18:59, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Well, I used the 'paraboloid' term in case someone else wants to use it for a different purpose. Anyway, I'll work on it.
What exactly did you mean by "constraint"? The box? Please tell me so I can create the 2nd diagram.
I think the front corner should work well as the origin.
You said the z should be atop the axis. Should I also place the x and y next to the arrowheads as well?
It's getting late (on this side of the world) so I'll do everything tomorrow (sorry). --Freiddy 20:43, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Well, (possibly) "the sun never sets" and all that. But people do. I misspoke on the 'constraint'. I should have said 'tangent plane'. (For the kind of constrained-maximum article I've been staring at recently for consumer theory with indifference curves and convex preferences, the budget constraint would be a vertical plane with negative slope in the x-y. direction. Anyhow, the tangent plane arguably hides your nice bull's eye. 'Preciate your assistance. No binding time constraint here. BW, Thomasmeeks 23:25, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
P.S. Yes, your idea for labelling at end of each axis sounds good. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Thomasmeeks (talkcontribs) 00:29, 9 January 2007 (UTC).
I tried, the labels are not above the arrowheads but slightly below it. The z isn't clear enough if I place it above the arrow. To keep the two pictures consistent, I had to capture another view from the calculator, so the projected angle is different from the last version. The pictures are available as "with tangent plane" and "without tangent plane". But the one "with tangent plane" is not the newest version I uploaded. I can't upload the newest version I already got cause my account is too new (I forgot to create a Wikimedia Commons account -- only the Wikipedia account). If you don't mind to wait for 3 more days... If you do mind, I can upload the newest version as a different name (please suggest one). The main difference is that the new version removed the unnecessary edges.
Sorry, again I forgot to sign. But I left this message a few days ago. --Freiddy Some time on 9 January 2007, actual time: Freiddy 10:15, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Gorgeous. I was looking but at my Watchlist, but someone must have posted something else. Just saw it a few hours ago (was caught up in something). But you're right: I could not bring above on this page. I wonder if enlarging the red ball would make it easier to see (alleviating need to enlarge Fig.). I'll try to work it into text next, however. Thx so much, Freiddy. -- Thomasmeeks 17:59, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Re: Picture

I commented at Talk:Maxima and minima about the picture you would like to add (it looks good :) Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 15:57, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Hmm. I see what happened... I'm using the popups so my watchlist showed the last edit as the "Barrett is black" one, and when I reverted that, it went to the previous vandalism about fat obese people, and overwrote your double reversion. I thought it wouldn't do that... sorry, and thanks for helping stomp out the vandals. Gzuckier 20:27, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

yeah, i see what you mean. I tossed them some "last warnings". User_talk:204.108.230.2#8_January_2007 Gzuckier 20:34, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
