Fresh start[edit]

Let's start again. First, you can sign your posts using four tildes, like this: ~~~~, which will produce your name and the time and date. I find it exciting to contribute to Wikipedia too! As soon as I can explain a few things to you, you can get back to editing. I'm going to start basic, so let me know if this is too simple for you.

In general, you shouldn't copy what someone else writes and pretend it's yours. This is called plagiarism, and it is unethical; that is, it is widely considered dishonest and not nice. It's kind of like stealing someone else's work. If I read a book, and copy part of what the author says into my paper for school, it's plagiarism, and if my teacher finds out, I will fail. There are also some laws that prevent people from copying other people's work, whether it's writing, art, music...even if they say where they got it. Copyright means that people retain the rights to things they create, and therefore can control how they are used, with some limitations. So if I read an interesting magazine article and type it up and put it on my web site, even if I say I got it from the magazine, I am using their work without permission and would be breaking the law. It's OK to copy one or two sentences, as long as it's in quotes ("") and it's clear that you're using their work. In the same way, if I make copies of my favorite U2 CD and give it (or sell it) to a bunch of my friends, even if I tell them it's U2's CD, I would be breaking copyright laws and could be sued—the same goes for downloading music. Not everything can be copyrighted. Facts cannot be copyrighted, but creative works can be.

Glenncando, when you copy something directly from another web site (or book, or newspaper, or magazine, etc.) and paste it here, you are violating copyright laws. You don't have their permission to use their words, their language. And it puts Wikipedia in a dangerous position. The person or organization who wrote the material could sue Wikipedia and perhaps win a lot of money from us, which would be devastating. When you copy it like that, you are doing two bad things. One, by pretending it's your writing, you are being dishonest. Two, even if you say where you got it from, you are using their work without their permission, which is illegal. I know you don't intend to do this, which is why I wish to explain.

Although the way the words are written is copyrighted, the facts themselves are not. What you should do is read other sources, and then use the material you've learned to write your own words. Rewrite it in your own words. Then list the source at the bottom of the article, in the "References" section. Let me give an example. The following is the second paragraph of a space.com article:

Using the Submillimeter Array, or SMA, a network of radio telescopes located in Hawaii, astronomers found that Pluto’s average surface temperature was about 43 K (-382 degrees F) instead of the expected 53 K (-364 degrees F), which is what the temperature of Pluto’s largest moon, Charon, is.

If I read this, I might add the following to the Pluto article: "Although astronomers expected Pluto's surface temperature to be around 53 K, recent work using Hawaii's Submillimeter Array radio telescope network suggests that Pluto's surface is actually around 43 K." And I would list the URL of the web page in the reference section.

Does you understand so far? What doesn't make sense? — Knowledge Seeker 05:51, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

Let's vote for Mariano Trias[edit]

Hey there Glenncando! I would like to ask for your vote for the article of Mariano Trias in Wikipedia's Article Creation and Improvement Drive.

I believe that this article still needs a bit of clean-up and expansion. I hope you would vote for the article in this link.

Thanks a lot!!! ---- Kevin Ray 08:29, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Nationalist People's Coalition - consistency[edit]

Hi! Following your template, should we keep the name Nationalist People's Coalition or change it to the Tagalog translation. Also, there is no Tagalog translation in the article. We also need to change Francis Escudero's political party for consistency. Please advice. --Pinay06|Talk|Email 02:54, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Based on the above, obviously, I was confused...I still am...Sorry...--Pinay06|Talk|Email 05:04, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. If it's not too much to ask, may I ask you to please add this info in the articles, too? I may not be able to "string" all this together. Thanks much! --Pinay06(Talk*Email) 20:35, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Francis Escudero[edit]

Hey, good job! Thanks much. Maybe you can also check this article, and lend it your "expertise". Mabuhay! --Pinay06 (Talk*Email) 22:01, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks![edit]

Thanks a lot for the Barnstar Award. I am really happy for it. It made me cheer-up! Well, about the Philippine President and Vice President Lists Barnstar, I am amenable to it. I would like to thank those people who really contributed to the near completion of the lists especially you. Again, thanks a lot!!! --- Kevin Ray 02:53, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm Furious, Uncontrollable, Convulsed and Keyed up to beat them[edit]

I have the same feeling with you Glenncando. I am really disappointed with my created articles that are up to deletion while those American and Canadian ones are enjoying freedom from AfDs! If ever it should qualify for deletion, then the following should also be deleted:

And now, I am really in this abbreviated condition:

  • Furious;
  • Uncontrollable;
  • Convulsed; and
  • Keyed up to beat them!

Don't worry, I have already posted in Tambayan about our concern. This would let them be aware of what outrage we are receiving from this biased people. -- Kevin Ray 06:03, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject C-SPAN?[edit]

Greetings fellow Wikipedia editor -

I am leaving you this note because I have reason to believe that you are interested in C-SPAN. (I may have made this assumption based on your C-SPAN user box, or perhaps for some other reason.) If this is not an interest of yours, please feel free to read no further and delete this message.

If you are in fact someone who is interested in C-SPAN, then let me put forward an idea that I have been kicking around for a while. What if we started a C-SPAN WikiProject?

The parameters of this (potential) project are up for discussion, but it could include some or all of the following (as well as things that may occur to you that have not occurred to me):

  • Creation, maintenance, and improvement of articles and lists directly related to C-SPAN and its programming.
  • Use of C-SPAN programming in citations for various topics
  • Inclusion of unique and targeted C-SPAN video links for various articles. (Doing this with respect for established guidelines at Wikipedia:External links.) (Example: If you are interested in the submarine USS Wyoming (SSBN-742), then having easy access to the eight hours of programming taped while a C-SPAN crew were guests on that submarine could also be of interest to you.)
  • Inclusion of (and possible further creation of) templated links such as {{C-SPAN|laurabush}}, that will easily take article readers to a link of all C-SPAN Video Library links for the person about whom the article is about.
  • What else?

I don't know exactly how far we may want to go, nor in what directions, but I do believe (as I have long noted on my user page) that C-SPAN and Wikipedia are both...

...fantastic vehicles for the free exchange of ideas and information in a non-sound-bite manner, and they both invite the participation of any parties (expert or amateur) who are interested in taking the time to absorb and/or contribute to the ideas and information offered. C-SPAN and Wikipedia go together like peanut butter and jelly, and I want to help give other Wiki users easy access to the great work that C-SPAN has done on a variety of topics.

Now, I should mention that I have never started a WikiProject before, and I do not know the best way to go about it. (Perhaps one of you do?) Let me offer one of my sandbox pages, User:KConWiki/sandbox/Wikiproject C-SPAN?, as a gathering area for comments until such time as we gather enough steam to start our own WikiProject page.

Thanks for reading this far, and I hope that you will give some consideration as to whether this is something we ought to attempt. Please feel free to pass this message on to others you know whom might be interested, and please let me know your thoughts and comments.
