Orphaned fair use image (Image:PennState-logo.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:PennState-logo.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Strange problem with forward slashes[edit]

Ditto here. Both links take you the same page, regardless of whether there is a forward slash at the end. I tested it in both Internet Explorer and Firefox, and there doesn't seem to be a problem. I have checked in IE6 and in Firefox 1.5.0.12, and I still see the error. Have you checked the image link at the bottom of that page? It very clearly highlights what I am talking about (i.e. the difference in the displaying of the hyperlinks / hyperlink text). --Godfoster 04:46, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll just have to chime in to add that I don't see the difference in my browsers, either in Firefox 2.0 or Konqueror 3.5. Do you see the same thing when you're not logged in, or from another computer? Henrik 09:33, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I just checked this while logged out, and I continue to see the error in Firefox 1.5.0.12 and IE6. I checked using my sister's computer using Firefox 2 and IE7, and the error did NOT appear. What could be causing this, I have no idea. --Godfoster 09:49, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(unindenting) A wild guess, but I wouldn't be surprised if antivirus/anti-spyware/security software might be the culprit. Or maybe actual virus/spyware/malware, it's hard to tell which causes more problems :) Try disabling any of that stuff and see if anything changes. Henrik 16:25, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My editing your userpage[edit]

I agree userpages are a little different from editing, but even you don't own your userpage. Further, the edit I did was in compliance with a Wikipedia policy of not having a fair use image outside article namespace. Since my edit was to bring your userpage in compliance with policy, was not vandalism in any way, I don't think "requesting" or "talking" to you first about the change is warranted. Per the Wikipedia User Policy you quoted me: As a tradition, Wikipedia offers wide latitude to users to manage their user space as they see fit. However, pages in user space still do belong to the community: ... Other users may edit pages in your user space, although by convention your user page will usually not be edited by others. Further down it also mentions that if a user does not want someone to edit their userpage, they should have a note to that effect on their userpage, I saw no such notice (nor do I now, you may want to add it). Right, I understand this. However, I was asking for advice on an acceptable free license, which is the question that has not yet been answered. I am perfectly willing to ask the copyright owner for such a release, but I want to be able to explain it to them exactly with no uncertainty to avoid confusion. Thus, I would need to pick a license and know what it means to be able to communicate it to them. It seems to me, at this time, that Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license is the one that they would be most comfortable with, as it allows free transmission and modification of the image, but forces all derivatives to use the Attribution-ShareAlike license, instead of allowing someone to copyright a modified image. I would like to hear opinions/thoughts on this though, since there are others who have been studying such licenses WAY longer than I have. --Godfoster 07:45, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please look at Commons:Commons:First steps/License selection. There, all possible licenses are explained. You should think about uploading your pictures on commons, because then they can be used in all the wikiprojects. --Thw1309 06:36, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Additionally, you need to establish that AVN is willing to open the picture up as free content. As you pointed out here, he simply says "Permission granted if you include “Used with permission of AVN Media Network”." Okay... While I thank everyone who answered for taking the time to write a response, I am a bit annoyed with the turnout. Many of the answers that I received were either repetitions of information that I had already quoted, information that had already been posted in response to my question, or it avoided answering the question. Mainly, the primary question that I had asked was for someone to provide me with a specific license that would be acceptable and/or recommended to procure for an image. ShadowHalo's response is the only one that really addressed this directly. Please, for those who would read this, don't think of this as some sort of insult, but rather, think of it as constructive criticism on how best to offer help. If someone is asking for something specific, and you can provide them with what they need, then just give it to them instead of pointing them at vague documents that are lengthy that may contain what they were looking for in one specific place. Instead, try providing them with the specifics they asked for, and also include where those specifics came from (e.g.: "Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 is an acceptable license for free images. For explanations on other licenses, feel free to check out Commons:Commons:First steps/License selection."). In any case, I have chosen to propose Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 for the image and have already received permissions back, which has been forwarded to the appropriate Wikimedia e-mail address. Fair use rationale for Image:PennState-logo.png[edit]

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
