Deletion discussions[edit]

Hello Jono2013: I know how frustrating it is to have one's work nominated for deletion (I've had to deal with this in the past). Some advice is to step back, take a deep breath and then take it easy on other editors in the deletion discussion and the files for deletion discussions. Try to stick with the facts and avoid confrontational discussion style, if possible. Basing your rationale for retention of the article and images upon Wikipedia's guidelines and policies is generally much more functional, and is also conducive to maintaining a collegial environment.

Here's some key links regarding guidelines and policies:

Just some friendly advice. Sincerely, Northamerica1000(talk) 04:18, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I made a comment at the ANI that was raised against you but rather than just throw words into the ether. Firstly, I'm neither an admin nor a material scientist (though I do hold 2 degrees in Physics, not that that really means a whole lot to someone who left academia behind some time ago) so all I can do is drop a few points on the little I know about Wikipedia. [User:TimTrent] has already given some suggestions so I won't repeat him, but one thing I will make a major point on relates to the post you left on his page about the Nuremburg trials. Descending ad argumentum Nazi, AKAGodwin's law, effectively ostracises you from the rest of the community. No one likes to be likened to the Nazis. This is something that should be avoided at all times regardless of how much you think it is worth using as a metaphor. Like any commmunity there are good and bad parts and just like any community you can't really pick and choose who you interact with, this is why assuming good faith is paramount. It's not a suicide pact but in general there are many good people who will work with you provided you assume good faith. This means not assuming that people who want your article deleted have any sort of ulterior motive or some agenda for doing so, merely that from their perspective and understanding of wiki policy and guidelines, which Northamerica1000 has kindly linked to, your article does not meet said guidelines and policies. In an AfD discussion, the only arguments that the closing admin will make will be based on arguments using policy. Admins have the buttons that allow them to delete articles but in order to use these buttons, they will not participate in the discussion so that they are not seen as biased in any particular way. So their decisions to delete will be solely based on the arguments made by the participants. But beware of descending down the path of the WP:WIKILAWYER.

This raises another point. When I say your article, it does not in any way belong to you, which I hope is made pretty clear in the print above the Save button. As a final point, and a very minor one at that, wikispeak has many quirks, which are not obvious to a newcomer. One of which is the avoidance of assumption that a particular user is male. To that effect, editors have come to use a variety of different ways to refer to someone. Some stick with assuming he until told otherwise. Others use "xyr" "s/he" "him/her". Some, like myself, use the gender neutral, and most importantly, singular "they". This in no way is meant to imply that there are a number of users behind the account, merely that in the interests of a gender equal playing field, we make no assumptions of gender.

That's all I really had to say, which is approaching TLDR territory myself. Like many editors, I make no assumptions that when I write what I see as advice to another user that that user will take that advice, but with the aims of the project in mind, I hope that it clears up some of the headaches that you have run into in your first foray. AfD thread[edit]

First, your tone has continued to be inappropriate, and bringing things like people's ages in is out of order. Second, you're making unfounded, baseless accusations of COI (which appears ironic), and other borderline personal attacks. Third, you don't need to reply to every single user in the AfD, and in fact it doesn't help in the slightest. Finally, your frustration at seeing an article taken back to AfD is understandable, but your actions are bang out of order. Read WP:COI, WP:AGF, WP:CIVIL and WP:NPA before responding anywhere again, please, or you may find that an admin decides to block you. Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 18:46, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A word to the wise[edit]

Wikipedia is not a benign place, nor is it a democracy. Rubbing people up the wrong way, even, perhaps especially, if you are correct, is likely to be counter-productive. Whether you recognise it or not, you are acting in an abusive manner. Please use objectivity rather than rhetoric, and work more gently with the people here. Like it or not, they, we, are your peer group. Abusing your peers is never a useful behaviour. Please consider your attitudes in your work here. Quiet, solid, and brief argument usually wins the day. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve.
