If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Sean Curran (scientist) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Conflict of interest[edit]

You appear to be editing on behalf of the USC Davis School of Gerontology. Please review the guidelines regarding conflicts of interest. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 17:29, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also, please review Wikipedia's notability standard for academics at WP:Notability (academics). This standard is quite demanding, as Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a directory, and it can cause embarrassment if biographical articles are posted which are then deleted, possibly after a deletion debate which remains on the record. JohnCD (talk) 17:55, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Status and Advice[edit]

As reviewing administrator, I removed the speedy tags from these two articles. But you need some advice, and, since I frequently work with such articles, let me expand a little on the good advice JohnCD has given you.

The criterion for notability of a faculty member or research is WP:PROF -- normally, only full professors are likely to meet it. The usual way of demonstrating that they do meet it is to include the citations to their most cited articles--in biomedicine, articles are normally kept if there are one or two papers with over a hundred citations, as shown by Web of Science or Scopus. It can also be shown by awards of national importance or being the editor in chief of a significant journal (not just a member the editorial board). The WP:GNG, our general notability guideline, also can apply--if there are substantial references providing substantial coverage from 3rd party independent published reliable sources, print or online, but not blogs or press releases, or material derived from press releases, then the person is usually considered to be notable.

By these standards, I do not think that Tara Gruenewald is likely to be notable, unless some of the papers have a truly exceptional citation record, and I shall probably nominate it for a regular deletion process. The awards are not of major significance. Sean Curran is more likely to be, if the NYT article talks to a significant extent about his work, rather than just mentions it. This article too would need citation figures.

They also need removal of the minor papers--list only the 4 or 5 most important or most cited. Giving a paper at a meeting or seminar is not considered significant, and should not even been mentioned, Curran;s IGEM coaching would be possibly important if the team had won the contest--if it has, please say so and give a reference.

I advise you to fix the problema, and do this very quickly, before the articles get nominated for deletion by a regular deletion process.

If you are going to add more such bios, start at the top, with the distinguished professors. Holding a distinguished or named professorship at USC would be justification for notability. It does not help the career of an assistant professor to have an article on them deleted from Wikipedia. If you decide to withdraw either of the articles, mark them with {{db-author}} at the top. I would certainly advise doing so for Gruenewald.

And some general advice:

Remember not to copy from a web site, even your own -- first it's a copyright violation, but, even if you own the copyright and are willing to give us permission according to WP:DCM, the tone will not be encyclopedic and the material will not be suitable. and remember to follow our WP:MOS manual of style. Do not refer to people as Dr. or Prof. after the first mention--use the last name only.

Include only material that would be of interest to a general reader coming across the mention of the subject and wanting the sort of information that would be found in an encyclopedia. Do not include material that would be of interest only to those associated with the subject, or to prospective students--that sort of content is considered promotional.

As a general rule, a suitable page will be best written by someone without Conflict of Interest; it's not impossible to do it properly with a conflict of interest or as a press agent, but it's relatively more difficult: you are automatically thinking in terms of what the subject wishes to communicate to the public, but an uninvolved person will think in terms of what the public might wish to know. And keep in mind that the goal of an encyclopedia is to say things in a concise manner, which is not the style of press releases or web sites, which are usually more expansive. If you think you can do it right according to our guidelines, do so, but expect the article to be carefully checked for objectivity.

However, since the name you have used refers to the subject of the article, you must choose another username. As explained in WP:USER, only individuals may edit. When you have a username that refers to the name of your organization, you imply that you are editing officially, and have a superior right to edit the page. But that is not the way WP works--all editors are considered equal--and your contributions like those of any editor must be justified by sources. I'm sure you do not intend to give such impression, but that's why we have the rule. Therefore, please choose another name. On that user page, you should say whom you are working for. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DGG (talkcontribs) 18:09, 20 March 2012

Thanks for all your advice and help! Very much appreciated. How do I change my user name? Geropost (talk) 18:13, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Apply at WP:CHU - read down to the bottom of that page and then click on "Simple." JohnCD (talk) 18:17, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion request?[edit]

With this edit, you added a {{db-author}} tag to the Tara Gruenewald article. Was it your intention to request that the article be deleted? WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 18:20, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes pleaseGeropost (talk) 18:21, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I saw that, realised what you intended, and have deleted the page. The reason for WikiDan61 checking is that all you needed to add was {{db-author}} as it appears on the screen here. That is called a "template" - the software expands what is between the curly brackets. When one wants to show the template without its expanding, the <nowiki> ... </nowiki> markers are placed round it on the edit screen, and it is all too easy to suppose, as you did, that you need to copy them too.
There is a basic guide to "Wiki markup" at WP:Cheatsheet, and a more detailed one at Help:Wiki markup. Work is proceeding on a more friendly editing interface, but that may take some time... Regards, JohnCD (talk) 18:40, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Sean Curran (scientist) for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Sean Curran (scientist) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sean Curran (scientist) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Guillaume2303 (talk) 09:23, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on File:Eileen Crimmins.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

File permission problem with File:Kelvin Davies.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Kelvin Davies.jpg, which you've sourced to http://www.usc.edu/dept/gero/news/2012/news0104.shtml. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 23:34, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The author of the photo, Christine McDowell, just emailed her permission for the usage of this photo to the address you provided. Please advise. Jriggs2012 (talk) 21:46, 27 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Contested deletion[edit]

At the now-deleted talk page of File:Eileen Crimmins.jpg you wrote the following, which I want to reply to: —teb728 t c 07:22, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This page should not be speedy deleted as an unambiguous copyright infringement, because it was commissioned by and taken on request of the USC Davis School of Gerontology, who owns the usage of it. While it does appear on the USC Davis School website, I work for the school and have a copy of the original file as well as permission to use it in this manner.—Jriggs2012 (talk) 22:01, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The license tag you attached asserted that you were the copyright owner, but the file’s metadata attributes it to S. Peter Lopez, and you seem to acknowledge here that you personally are not the copyright owner. You say that you have “permission to use it in this manner.” Do you mean permission to use it on Wikipedia, or do you mean permission to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license, which allows anyone to reuse the photo for anything including commercial use and derivative works? If the former, I’m sorry, but Wikipedia does not accept permission for use only on Wikipedia. If the latter, please have the copyright owner verify permission as described at WP:COPYREQ. —teb728 t c 07:22, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • The image you uploaded is not a direct copy from this page or the PDF to which it links so your claim to have the original is probably true. But if so, please upload the original - why should Wikipedia have to accept just a near-thumbnail? — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 09:15, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
