Images[edit]

Are you the owner of the images that you've uploaded? Image:CBTL_Beverage_005_copy.jpg, for example. The photos look professional, and I would have thought they'd be copyrighted by the company. Can you explain? ·:· Will Beback ·:· 18:18, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see you uploaded Image:1RIDREVSPEED FB09.jpg. Thank you for your contribution. However, the image lacks any descriptions, and provides neither source information nor any indication of who the author might be. It also does not state if it is a fair-use image. Unfortunately, if an image here on Wikipedia does not provide adequate information as to its source and who its author is, it may be deleted. Would you care to elucidate? Thanks, Elucidate (light up) 18:23, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Copying[edit]

I deleted Riddell because it was all copied from other websites. For copyright and neutrality reason, it's inappropriate to copy like that. You may recreate the page, but please use only your own words. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 18:51, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help. I have another question. I have images I would like to upload and I work with the company who has given me permission to upload them. HOw do I upload without them getting deleted this time?

Also, can I use information from press releases put out by Riddell as long as I use my own words, or does the information have to come from an article by a journalist?

Thanks so much for your help. LAIntern (talk) 00:37, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Press releases are considered to be self-published sources, and are suitable to support assertions about the organization that issued them which are not excessively remarkable or self-promotional. So they cannot to be used for assertions about 3rd parties, or for claims like "the top company in its field" or "it invented the safety helmet". They're fine for assertions like "Joe Smith became CEO in 2007", "A new plant is opening in Taiwan", or "$36 million in sales." For more information, see WP:V and WP:RS. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 00:55, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
PS: when you're thinking that you've improved the article enough, let me know and I'll go through and fix formatting, etc, for you. You can leave a note on my talk page: User talk:Will Beback. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 00:59, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any way you can bring the page back so I don't have to create a new page from scratch? I can label it as under construction until I have listed all my sources and I iwill not copy information. Is this possible? LAIntern (talk) 19:40, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I restored the article to the version before you added the copyvios. Here are the sources from the veriosn you'd written:Official Riddell site[1][2] And, BTW, you are uploading copied photos as well. Unless you took the photos yourself, or the owners are willing to release them, they can't be used on Wikipedia. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 19:49, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Copyrights and permissions[edit]

I fixed up the article a bit so as to conform to the manual of style. I added that it's headquartered in Des Plaines - if that's wrong please correct it. As for images, I suggest you settle in with a nice, ice-blended coffee. It's a difficult issue.

Wikipedia only allows two kinds of images: those that are freely licensed for use by anyone (including commercial uses) and those that are 'borrowed' under the fair use exemption in the copyright laws. A common type of image that is permissible under fair use is a company logo. A copyrighted photo of a helmet would not qualify for fair use, since anyone can replace it by simply taking a picture of the helmet. Getting back to freely-licensed images, the owner of an image may grant an irrevocable license for others to use the image. There are several licenses available that meet Wikipedia's requirements. You marked one of the images you uploaded with the Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0. That means that anyone, even Riddell's competitors, may use or even modify the image so long as they attribute the source. It is rare for companies to release images under these kinds of licenses. I suggest that you send a company lawyer these links:

The second link includes instructions for how to grant permission for use of the images. How's that iced-coffee doing? Another option is for someone to take new pictures of the helmets and release the photos on their own. These are just main points - there are many policy pages devoted to this topic. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 19:40, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, this is seriously confusing! I really appreciate your help with this. I think I will just upload the logo and a photo of a helmet I take myself. If I upload these two things what license option do I mark them with, so they don't get taken down? Thanks again for fixing up the page! LAIntern (talk) 23:07, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As you've already discovered, when you upload an image there is a pull-down list of possible image tags. First, the image you take yourself: You have several choices. Most folks use the GFDL license. If you want any future use of the image to be attributed to you, there's the Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 that you've already used. If you really want to really it totally you can pick "Public domain". As for the logo, use "Non-free/Logo." Once it's uploaded, you'll need to fill out a form giving the rationale for fair use. See Template:Logo fur. I can help you with that once the file is uploaded. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 23:23, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see you uploaded the logo I've added it to the article and fixed the license. We still need to fill in the rationale. Image:Riddell.logo.jpg I can do most of it but I don't know the URL where you got it. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 01:27, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for getting the image onto the Riddell page for me! I dont have the URL becuase the company e-mailed me the image to use. Let me know what else you need from me. I am going to attempt to upload some photos of their products that I just took with my camera. LAIntern (talk) 18:20, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I filled in it as best I could. There may be a complaint because it isn't a low resolution version (under 300 px in largest dimension). ·:· Will Beback ·:· 18:57, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I pulled another logo from the internet. Should I upload that one instead? This is the URL I found it at http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/download/brand/158538.html. LAIntern (talk) 19:00, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose. Having a source is important. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 19:14, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok I uploaded the new logo I pulled from the web. This is the URL http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.sport-it.com/sportscollectibles/riddell01.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.sport-it.com/&h=94&w=120&sz=3&hl=en&start=5&usg=__Tv4uqy0CWAJb9dLLEIxNnc1PjC4=&tbnid=hIq8Xlb70Xm-VM:&tbnh=69&tbnw=88&prev=/images%3Fq%3Driddell%2Blogo%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1T4HPND_enUS232US232

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Wood_bat_008.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 07:17, 13 November 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MER-C 07:17, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Peppermint_Ice_Blended_and_Latte.jpg. I noticed that that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Images and COI[edit]

I already gave you the rundown on image licenses above. The page you're looking for is Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries. Since you identify yourself as working for a PR firm employed by the subject of an article, you should read and follow WP:COI, the guideline on conflicts of interest. Adding pictures probably wouldn't raise any questions, but more significant edits, especially those which serve to promote the subject or make them appear in a btter light, should be avoided. In these cases it's better to use the article talk pages to make suggestions for improving the articles. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 22:58, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

July 2009[edit]

Your recent addition to Paul Dergarabedian has been removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.    7   talk Δ |   00:54, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Paul Dergarabedian requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you.
