Sylvia Wald

Hi Megalibrarygirl,

I am so happy there is a Sylvia Wald page on Wikipedia and I noticed that you were a strong contributor to the page. I just have a few questions about how to add to the Sylvia Wald page and suggest an edit. Is this something that I would contact you for or is there somewhere else that I need to go? I am very new to editing and creating Wikipedia pages and would like to expand on the nonprofit foundation that Sylvia Wald and her husband, Po Kim, started as well as start a page for him. If this is not the right place to reach out to for edits, would you point me in the right direction of where to go?

Thanks! Meghan 67.245.123.204 (talk) 14:46, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi Meghan! You can start editing on the page itself whenever you wish. To start a new page, you'll have to register an account. Make sure you use a lot of "reliable sources" like newspaper articles and/or journals to support what you write about. I'm happy to help if you need any, esp if you want me to look at your work. Sorry to jump in to the conversation - Welcome Meghan! I thought these bits of information may help you get started: Getting Started and How to Edit. Cheers, Dresken (talk) 23:12, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.67.245.123.204 (talk) 13:36, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Another question

Hi Megalibrarygirl,

I really appreciate your help so far! Some of the Wikipedia guidelines are a little confusing and I just wanted to see if you could clear a few things up before I really get into editing/creating a page. I intern at a nonprofit foundation for the artists (Sylvia Wald and Po Kim) that we have discussed and am working on building Wiki pages so that they are more searchable. I had heard that anyone with a vested interest in the the person or subject of the page cannot create the page so that it is an objective page. Do you know if that is true? And if I would be able to create a page for Po? I am worried about starting to put it all together and then find out that Wikipedia will not accept it.

Also, do you know if it is harder for me to publish a page since my account would be so new to Wikipedia? I thought that I would have to be a credible contributor to multiple pages before I could create my own. Is that true?

Again, thank you so much for responding so quickly and being so willing to help!

I think as long as you disclose your affiliation with the non-profit, you'll be OK. I've never dealt with that personally, though. I work for a public library in Texas. I've written about a few of the historical librarians who built my library and I don't see that as a conflict of interest. Instead, I see that I have easy access to the information in our archives. Writing for Po Kim is probably not a problem. When I was a newer editor, I did some edits on my library itself. Now, I would be more hesitant. It's a fine line, really. There is a place on Wiki called the Teahouse. You may get a more solid answer there. (Wikipedia:Teahouse) Overall, most editors are glad when people are trying to follow the rules and respect Wiki policies. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 15:57, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week for your work on articles relating to women's issues. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Maile66 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Megalibrarygirl to be Editor of the Week for creating 174 new articles in the last year. She has been a consistent contributor to content on women's issues, both as article creator and for expansion. Of her 17,363 edit total, only 301 of them have been minor edits. Megalibrarygirl has helped Wikipedia's efforts to increase the encyclopedia's content on women, both in the United States and elsewhere in the world. She regularly participates in AfD striving to source articles rather than simply delete them. Because in the real world, she really is a librarian, she helps many editors find sourcing. She has been the driving force for creating the redlists of WikiProject Women in Red. Anytime a new redlist is needed for an "editathon" or some missing area for the encyclopedia, she creates it and begins populating it with curated names and links to confirm notability. She has tirelessly worked to update the monthly metrics lists and worked on adding women's articles to surname lists. On top of all of that, she regularly welcomes and mentors new editors. Encouraging and coaching she is a positive force and a real asset to WP. She has written for the Signpost, plus create and update dozens of redlists (lists of redlinks) for WP:Women in Red. Her positivity is much appreciated.
