GOCE mentorship

Greetings. I've been on Wikipedia for a couple of years now, but I recently thought I'd get involved with Copy-editing. I've done a bit before, but it's mostly been on articles I've been involved with/know a fair bit about; so I thought I'd ask if you'd be willing to watch over my initial attempts a little. I signed up for the August blitz, and I'm going to give at least a couple of articles a shot; but I'd feel a lot better if somebody glanced over my work. Regards, Vanamonde93 (talk) 08:28, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Welcome to the GOCE; we can use your help! You can see the above thread for instructional links, and just ping me when you have something you'd like checked. Since the request articles can be a bit more demanding to copyedit than the ordinary backlog ones, if you'd rather wait for the month-long September backlog-reduction drive that's okay too. Have fun and all the best, Miniapolis 13:48, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! As you said above, there doesn't seem to be a commitment during the blitz; so I'll give the articles a glance, and if they seem too difficult I'll just bail out, and wait for the backlog drive. Cheers, Vanamonde93 (talk) 14:20, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
Hello again. I just made at attempt to copy-edit Dattatraya Parchure, and I'd be grateful if you could look it over. It seemed a good candidate because I've worked on related articles before, and knew the material at least a little. here is a combined diff of what I did, and here is the article history, in case you want to look at my rationale for removing some things. There were also a couple of edits by another editor in between; not too significant, though. Cheers, Vanamonde93 (talk) 07:53, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Sure. As soon as finish the article I'm working on later today, I'll take a look at it. All the best, Miniapolis 13:50, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Nice job! I also like your edit summaries. Thanks for your help and all the best, Miniapolis 17:57, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! Quick question; will copy-editing something from the backlog count towards my total words for this blitz? Or should I just wait for September? Cheers, Vanamonde93 (talk) 15:18, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

() Sorry, no; the blitz is requests-page only (but the backlog-reduction drive is only a week away :-)). Feel free to choose something from the requests page for the blitz, although I'd steer clear of the GA and FA candidates for now; some requests are for non-GAN and -FAC pages. All the best, Miniapolis 15:45, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Ha, thanks, I guessed as much. Taking one that is being prepared for GA, but where the user who submitted it is essentially trying for British English and grammar, which I think I am fine with; it is more complex stuff (like layout) that I think I am weaker on. Cheers, Vanamonde93 (talk) 15:53, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Hello again. I had a quick question; so as you must have noticed when you gave me the barnstar for the blitz (Thanks, btw) I finished one article, but left another halfway done. Does that mean that the second article counts toward the september drive word count? The Blitz and the drive had no gap between them, if I understand correctly, so that second article (or the half of it that I've done so far) should count either in one or the other. Cheers, Vanamonde93 (talk) 21:33, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
First time I've been asked this. Actually, there was 24 hours between the end of the blitz to the start of the drive so I'd say no, but you may want to check on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Coordinators; Jonesey95 and Baffle gab1978, the other GOCE coordinators, may have other opinions. Ordinarily we count sections of articles (if that's all that requires copyediting), but not half-articles. Miniapolis 22:29, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! Seems a trifle unfair, though, because since I was planning to CE that article in any case, it would seem I have an incentive to delay beginning it, which seems counter-productive.Vanamonde93 (talk) 22:53, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
Life isn't always fair, and it's hard enough running these drives as it is without the hair-splitting you suggest. Are you in this to improve articles or win a prize? Miniapolis 23:02, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
Whoa, chill, mate. If I was here for the prize I wouldn't be here at all. I am happy to copy edit just for the sake of improving Wikipedia; all I am saying is that once you offer incentives, they should be offered in a consistent manner. I'm going to drop this issue now, and get back to the Corfu case; I just felt some feedback may be appreciated. Sure, life isn't fair, that isn't a reason not to try and change that. Regards, Vanamonde93 (talk) 03:10, 2 September 2014 (UTC)
I'm not going to split hairs either, Vanamonde93. If you didn't finish copy-editing the article during the blitz, you can't count it for the blitz. If you finish it during the September drive, do what you think is fair for yourself. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:14, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Greetings again. I have finished copy-editing Corfu Channel case, and I would appreciate it if you gave it a look over. I recognize that it is a long article, so perhaps you cannot do all of it, but some generic feedback would be appreciated. Regards, Vanamonde93 (talk) 06:00, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Sure. As soon as I finish the article I'm working on, I'll look at it. However, in future I still think you should focus on the backlog rather than the requests page for now (just until you learn the ropes). All the best, Miniapolis 13:50, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
It looks very good, and thanks for your help on a long article. You can put {{GOCEtb}} on the requester's talk page (if you haven't already), and I'll archive it. All the best, Miniapolis 15:24, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! And sure, I'll stick largely to the backlog, especially because there's not many others on the requests page I am interested in. I did notify Mendaliv, and mentioned a couple of "clarify" tags that we could work through.
Quick question; when I take an article from the backlog, how do I mark it as taken? Regards, Vanamonde93 (talk) 16:44, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
I used to use {{GOCEinuse}}, but it would be over-zealously removed (like if I went offline to sleep :-)). Stfg said that he just removes the {{copyedit}} tag, and I've found that it works well. It helps to check the history first; I've occasionally accidentally worked on the same article as another editor (who neither removed the copyedit tag nor added GOCEinuse), but it doesn't happen often. All the best, Miniapolis 17:09, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
Okay, that makes sense, I'll remove the tag. I didn't want to add {{GOCEinuse}}, because I doubt very much I'll have the motivation to finish one article in a day. Thanks. Vanamonde93 (talk) 18:52, 6 September 2014 (UTC)

Quick question. I appear to have (entirely coincidentally) CEd two "old" articles. Do I update the table myself, or is it automated, or what? Cheers, Vanamonde93 (talk) 05:00, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

We do our own recordkeeping, in our individual drive-page section and on the leaderboard. All the best, Miniapolis 13:20, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks; that makes it easier. Vanamonde93 (talk) 15:56, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
Greetings again. Quick MOS question; what is protocol for the name of a magazine (i.e. The New Yorker) when it appears in a section title? Is it still italicized? Vanamonde93 (talk) 05:16, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
Yes. What are discouraged in section headers are wikilinks. All the best, Miniapolis 13:33, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Greetings again. Apologies if this sounds a little self-serving; I Copy-edited a 9k word article, and updated the leaderboard as you asked me to. However, in the confusion of the last few days, my name appears to have been deleted from the "articles over 5k" section. Since the event was closed, I did not wish to correct this myself. Funnily enough, my name is still there in the longest articles section. Regards, Vanamonde93 (talk) 19:56, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

No problem. I've updated the leaderboard (it's okay to do it yourself), and you're tied for fifth in the 5K-article category with Demiurge10000. All the best, Miniapolis 21:55, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! Vanamonde93 (talk) 22:02, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Changing an article title

I restarted the Social practice art page by creating a link from Social Practice but neglected to fix the capitalization (there shouldn't be any for practice and art). Could you fix?--Aichik (talk) 11:11, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Aichik, one of Miniapolis's talk page stalkers took care of it for you. – Jonesey95 (talk) 12:16, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, Jonesey. All the best, Miniapolis 13:20, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks guys!--Aichik (talk) 12:44, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

A kitten for you!

Thanks for the copyedit on AKB48. It looks really good now!

AngusWOOF (talk) 20:16, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for the kind words. I'd say the article is now B-class, and depending on the sources it may be ready for a GAN. All the best, Miniapolis 20:26, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
