For better or for worse...

Hi Urshyam, thanks for commenting on my RfA. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind taking a second look at my userspace contributions tree. I've been doing a lot of script and template (demo) work which has inflated the overall userspace edit count. Please let me know if you're still concerned--I'd be curious to know your opinion. Thanks! ~MDD4696 19:35, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

removing candidate

Hey Urshyam about removing candidates from Wikipedia:Article Improvement Drive, it would be better to wait next day in UTC. Cheers --Ugur Basak 20:53, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

No need to sorry:)Just give them 3 hour chance:)--Ugur Basak 21:10, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
Probably they can't get enough votes to stay. I just look to your edit counter and wow you passed 10K just in March, congratulations. Aren't you a bot, hmm?--Ugur Basak 21:23, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Re: Autotagging

Hello Mdd4696, It was really great that you care about individual's vote. My vote goes for support now as I am fully convinced with your reply. Will you help me about autotaaging process, because i am unable to understand it. Right now, I am associated with untagged images project. Thank you in anticipation, Regards, Shyam (T/C) 20:08, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

I've added some usage instructions to User:Mdd4696/Image Autotagger. With the next version, I hope to make the interface more intuitive. Are you currently using any tools to make image tagging easier? It seems that you have a very efficient method of tagging, whatever it is. Thanks for the vote of confidence by the way! ~MDD4696 20:51, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi.

Thanks for your message. I contacted the creator of this image and asked if I could upload the image to Wikipedia.org. He said that it was ok so I didn't think more of it.

Do I have to contact the creator again to get a hold of the copyright templates? I am not to familiar with all the terms and stuff so I thought it waas best to ask how to procede.

Thanks for your help. Odd7—Preceding unsigned comment added by Odd7 (talkcontribs)

Peter Cusing as Van Helsing picture.

I guess I forgot to put a tag on this, but it shouldn't be deleted I think. I got it with permission from the website I had posted along with the description but there's also the fact that the Dracula film Peter had portrayed Van Helsing in is nearly 50 years old (46 to be exact). The film is a classic in the film vaults but for all intensive purposes, I highly doubt Hammer studio's is going to go after people for a screenshot of a 46 year old, somewhat obscure film and the film is closing in on public domain/fair use age so I recommend these tags:

{{Non-free fair use in}} {{withpermission}}.

I'll expand on the copyright itself once the web administrator gets back to me.

I've sent the website administrator whom I recieved permission to use this image from an email asking him how the picture came to be and any other needed information, so I'll post that up as soon as I get it. But for the mean time, I really don't think its necessary to delete this. I won't remove the removal tag and replace it with a tag until I hear from you. I'd like to save the image because it works very well with the two wiki's its linked to.--Kiyosuki 00:14, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

AID Maintenance Log

Hi there. I was just wondering why you sometimes sign the log twice within one hour? --Steven 03:22, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm sorry, you must have misunderstood my last message. What I was saying was, you don't need to sign the AID Maintenance log every time you run the bot. You only have to sign it once. Otherwise, we end up loosing a quick record of the people that previously maintained the project. Thankyou --Steven 00:54, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Image problem

Hai Shyam, the images Image:Payan Chella Raj.jpg and Image:Muttirikkinaru.jpg are from the same website www.kanyakumarionline.com. And so I marked them as fair use and I cited them. But now the website was missing. So what to do? - Vaikunda Raja 20:42, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Image:Queen Mary and Queen Mary.png

I don't know what is appropriate regarding the above image, it was assembled from what was listed as a public domain image, and another image taken by a relative, which was also placed in the public domain and posted to the commons. In other words it was a compilation of 2 public domain works. The first picture, of the Queen, Mary Stuart, has since been delted for some reason, and if that was a good reason, then the Image:Queen Mary and Queen Mary.png image should be deleted as well. I'm going to just acquiesce to whatever gets done with either image, I trust wikipedia to do whatever it thinks is appropriate.

Thanks for notifying me though, that was kind. Pedant 22:28, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

I use it extensively as part of my profile description: on my blog, on flickr, on wikipedia and elsewhere. I am not sure where the copyright issue is... --Chandrachoodan Gopalakrishnan

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

I was just wonderin if you could answer me a question. I don't really understand the deal with the photos and all that goes with them. I mean, this whole site is a basic free for all and anyone and everyone can do anything and everything to it. So why is it that when someone adds a photo to it, they've got to get permission to use it. Now myself I look at this as a waste of time because of the simple fact that there are a zillion photos of anything and everything out there that people use. As long as you are giving credit to where you got it, I don't see the big deal. Now that is the same thing with anything and everything that is on this site. If you the powers that be want to be so picky about photos, why aren't they picky about the information that people put in the entries. I mean, I've gone on to some people's bios and shows and have seen things literally plagiarized, word for word from one source or another. I'm just really curious why they are so stingent about some things but not others. If you could help me out and answer some of these things or if there is someone who might be able to, I would appreciate it. If you could, please contact me at catsfanatic_1999@yahoo.com instead of replying here since I only come on here every so often. On the page for the graphic above, why do you keep removing my detailed copyright explanation? I am the author of the image, and I provide express approval for it to be used, but only as indicated. It is a specialized license. Suggesting that its usage is only "fair use" makes it appear as if I have not given express approval. It's important, though, that I've given express approval for use on only one page. Jkatzen 07:38, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Jkatzen, you mentioned in your detailed copyright information that it is only for use on a single article. On any other article it is simply copyright infringement. You did not use any tag to explain your copyright information, so it was untagged. I have tried to tag it according to information provided. If you think, it is tagged incorrectly, then please tag it suitably but don't leave as untagged image. Thank you, Shyam (T/C) 08:59, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
Well, if there's no tag that suitably explains my license, what is supposed to happen? Jkatzen 05:04, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Hello, photos really are a pain in the arse with wiki...

There is no copyright, its used with express permission of the author Richard Pane (an aquaintance). his site is http://lucking.org.

I don't know the tag which best describes this.

If this doesn't answer your problem then i cant be bothered, just delete it.

Image of Chatris for Laxmangarh

I just noticed that you have taken off the image of chatris that I had put in in the entry for Laxmangarh. I had clearly indicated that I had taken the picture myself, and that I was placing it in public domain, unfortunately nobody bothered to read that.

Anyway, it is what it is, more power to you and your deletions.

Image Tagging

Dear Shyam,

I have uploaded several images that I own copyright to with the proper copyright tag. But all the images I uploaded were removed. Here is a list of the images:

Image Tagging Image:Europride02 001.jpg Image Tagging Image:Berlin01 090.jpg Image Tagging Image:Amsterdam03 103.jpg

The first time I uploaded I was unaware of the copyright restrictions so the second time I uploaded the files I made sure they were tagged properly. Would you please assist me in re submitting these images?

Hi

I have specified the source of the map. The place is known for being public domain. My understanding is that you question only maps of unknown sources?

However, right now they are under construction so I cannot find easyly apropriate statement.

I hope it solves the problem?

Hello,

I just reviewed the wikipedia article I have written at length at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aranycsapat, and to my suprise I found 20 very legal images removed from the article. As I might have stated before, I do not know if there was a copyright issue with those images or not but I listed the urls from where they came and that is what I believed wikipedia required. As a second comment, I've have never had those images removed before and they were posted for much longer than that the 7 prohabitionary days, all those images were there for months before you decided to remove them. Please kindly resubmit them as I believe honestly that you're orphan image removing bot made an honest mistake. Please contact me if you need further details on where I downloaded those images. Thank you.

You have changed the text form "passed away" to "died". Please tell me what is the difference? Is there any such need to do so. Shyam (T/C) 22:23, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

"Passed away" is usually a euphemism. It doesn't say what it means. It is idiomatic. It is not encyclopaedic in tone. It is verbose. (See also parrot sketch.) "Died" is accurate, clear, concise universal English. Regards, Rich Farmbrough 22:42 18 April 2006 (UTC).
Incidentally it is mentioned explicitly at Wikipedia:How_to_write_a_great_article#writing. Rich Farmbrough 23:02 18 April 2006 (UTC).

Thanks for uploading Image:Chris Huhne.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 21:53, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

I didn't upload the original picture of Chris Huhne, it was uploaded by somebody else. I just edited it, so that the size would be on line with the other pictures of the Lib Dem politicians. I had the impression, that it was originally uploaded by somebody who was related to the site of Chris Huhne, but I can't tell this for sure, because all the original data seems to have disappeared. --Liberalis 23:28, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

PS: See also [Pictures_from_libdems.org.uk_permission], I think that the same picture or a similar can also be found from the site of the Lib Dems.

Image Deleted?

Hello Shyam,

I am the author of an article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harbor_Heights_%28Mamaroneck%2C_NY%29) which had an image deleted and I do not understand why. Can you help me?

The image is one of several that I believe are fair use and were tagged as such in the article. It seems to me it was randomly deleted by a bot and I do not have a backup of the image. I would like to know if it is recoverable.

The image is a scan from a newspaper advertisement from 1927 and I assume the copyright has expired.

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

Hi, The link to Hindi Wikipedia's RfA page is hi:विकिपीडिया:Requests for adminship. But its useless to contest for adminship as Hemanshu is the only bureaucrat and he is inactive. You might be knowing that only bureaucrats can appoint users as admins. Even I want to be an admin to Hindi Wikipedia as the place is going like hell. The only admin who has shown any activity in 2006 is Spundun and he makes some 10 edits in a month. What do you suggest we should do? Anyway, please give me some time to work on the infobox. Another image question

I completely don't understand this image permission thing. Please can you tell me why I can't use the photograph on this website:- http://members.tripod.com/~TC_AS/ (as this is my website!) in my Wikipedia entry?? If I use the photograph, people just take it away and I don't know why. (I obtained the photograph years ago and I think it was from the "Women in American History by Encyclopedia Britannica" site - which doesn't seem to be around any more.) However, this photograph is on a few websites now - so why should anyone care if I use it? Isn't that what they call public domain? (I would really like a reply that doesn't contain lots of baffling acronyms - thanks!) Jaycey 18:23, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
