My RfA

Thank you for participating in my RfA. It was successful, and I am now, may God have mercy on us all, an administrator. Look at all the new buttons! I had heard about 'protect,' 'block user,' and 'delete,' but no one told me about 'kill,' 'eject,' and 'purée.' I appreciate the trust the community has in me, and I'll try hard not to delete the main page or block Jimbo. -FisherQueen (Talk) 18:02, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Quran Wiki Project Page deleted, why?

Hello,

Hope you are doing fine. I am very new on wikipedia so anything I say that may not sound appropriate, I seek your pardon.

Kindly advice on what were the "advertisement" grounds for which Quranwiki.com page was being deleted from Islamic websites category by you (Another three websites are already listed there.). It's community project that we started to compile a wiki based upon Quranic teachings.

I don't understand then how can it be considered advertisement?? Let alone, it was in the very apporopriate cateogry that exists to list islamic websites, i.e. Islamic websites category.

Before taking taking next step to the next level, in all fairness, I believe I should investigate issue properly by seeking your guidance so my judgement stays practical and not premature.

It may sound as strange as it was of deletion of Quran wiki page which was deleted within 5 minutes of it's creation especially when I did put {{hang on}} to have some time.

Any sincere response would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards

Himesh Reshammiya

Hey hi  !! first thanx for the welcome. as you know i am new here , i am interested to know what change did you exactly make to the said article. Also i would like to know was my opinion regarding the grammar of that Page wrong ? or was my approach wrong. I am keen to know this so that in future i do not repeat the mistakes again.

thank you once again

Hi, thanx for the information !! i have done the necessary corrections. Just another small question. When i write or edit some page why does it appear to be in some dotted box ?? while rest seems to be alright ??

is there any other way of editing ?? (Asro 11:53, 6 July 2007 (UTC))

Uploading Photos Copyrights

Hi !! utkarsh , i want to uplaod some photos to an article on Sushmita Sen. But the copyrights issue has confused me. I did find some goood Photos of her in google. but now how am i to check for the copyright ?? could you help me with this ?? tell me which photos are allowed on wikipedia ?.

(Asro 19:25, 7 July 2007 (UTC))

Katrina Kaif article needs semi protection

The Katrina Kaif article is being edited nonstop by people who seemingly have no clue about what is allowed and what is not. It is getting really tiring removing all the non-free photos and the tabloid information from teh article. Most of the edits are coming in from IP addresses or first time editors. Could you semi-protect the article for a while to give it a chance to settle down? Thanks! Achitnis 15:16, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (Image:UniversityOfPuneLogo.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:UniversityOfPuneLogo.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 21:24, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi!

Thanks for the welcome message. I'm new to the whole editing process, though I have been using it as a reference tool for a long while... about two years now. I have a fair idea of what's required here, but as I said, I am new, so it'll take a while to adjust.

Thanks for the cleanup on the article. Stay in touch.

Cheers!

Is this an appropriate external link?

I was going through the article on Ramnarain Ruia College.

This site was used as an external link. I checked it out. It's arguable funny, but is is appropriate to use this site on Wikipedia?

Thanks

I didn't quite think it was suitable either. Just wanted to run it by someone with a bit more experience. A Sengupta 14:07, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

First of all, sorry if I did something which seemed to be insulting. It wasn't my intention. I must have done it in a professional way like you do now, talking to you before editing/reverting. So I'm really sorry and thank you for talking to me before doing any further edits. I actually posted a message when I reverted the pages to Talk:National Film Awards.

If my explanation is not worth to leave the page like it was previously before your edits, so I have only one request please. Could you please leave the winners' names highlighted in bold? It is my only request and it's really important for me. I believe the winners should be highlighted in bold and film names in italic. For example, Raveena Tandon || Daman. It was also my only reason to do that. Clours are really unnecessary and unimportant. Just Bold and Italic text are the only aspects I ask you to agree with. The oscar awards for example have that like this.

Thank you, best regards, --ShahidTalk2me 18:08, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

WOW, thank you very much:) You're also doing a great here! Best regards, --ShahidTalk2me 17:32, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Just to echo what I said on the Talk page. Thank you so much for dropping by and cleaning up the article. This kind of scale of edit could only really be done by someone not close to the subject. It is one huge step forward and I really appreciate what you did.

I like to thank you as well for dropping by. At the same time, I would like if it is possible for you to check this [1] it would be greatly appreciated. Best, avyakt7 20:59, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

thanks for the hints on the reference tags

i tidied up 99% of the ones left except a few I could not work out how to and fixed punctuation............I think the article looks pretty tidy nowGreen108 10:00, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Dada Lekhraj Om Mandli

i flagged up on the BKWSU page this the om mandli was not actually the committee

this is factual erroneous and i think you will find it difficult to substantiate against even the Bkwsus own material ,,what is your actual knowledge of this organisation?

i wont argue that Kripalani is notable enough but shouldn't the page be in his own name?

i challenge the use of Dada Lekhraj as , by comparison, it would be a little like having a page on Josef Stalin title "Uncle Joe".........sorry bad example i know.........dada was not his name..........in engligh it is a bit like saying "uncle lekhraj"

but thanks for the good work on the citation , i did not know how to lay them outGreen108 12:05, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Please see my reply at Talk:Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University#om_mandli_as_a_committee (diff). utcursch | talk 13:02, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Tendentious reverts on BKWSU article

Please see the recent editing history. It would appear editors are forcefully re-inserting material that you cleaned up. I am going to let go and not get dragged into an edit war over it. I hope you are able to to help resolve this as it is an ongoing battleground issue stretching back the whole history of the article. This article is a prime candidate for article supervision if and when the policy is implemented since arbcom have been unable to curtail this activity. I was eventually referred back to try lower dispute resolution than arbcom because the problems now involve editors not implicated in the ruling. I am not criticising arbcom or any other right-minded editor. It just seems to me (and I hope I'm wrong) to be more a bigger, more persistent problem than Wikipedia is currently able to handle. Thanks & regards Bksimonb 18:52, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

provided reliable reference for date of birth ,thanksGreen108 19:06, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

i have a couple of technical question;

if the same reference <ref> tag" is used but a different quote is refered to, e.g. page number and quotation..........technically how do you do that?

what is the proper way to lay out the bibliography at the end?

i have gone over the references on BKWSU trying to put them into shape , it is the first time I have done so and there may be a few errors but mostly it worksutcursch | talk 04:42, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello! Some anon keeps reverting the page of Veer Zaara where he adds a copyrighted synopsis. I've been reverting his edits since last month every day. It's tiresome. I thought it's good to ask for his block. But he changes his IP ever day and reverts the edits under different IP numbers. At the beginning he had a username. Now he makes his edits in disguise. It's unbearable. Could you please protect the Veer-Zaara page? Best regards, --ShahidTalk2me 11:17, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

I see you posted a message to this anon. The problem is that tomorrow his IP will be completely different. So I don't think is will help. I was warning him everyday but it doesn't help. I think, protecting the page is the best way. Regards, --ShahidTalk2me 11:27, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Temporary Block

First and foremost, let me thank you for handling the case of IP vandal 81.107.152.205. Nevertheless, despite your prompt response to my querry, I can't but think you were a little bit lenient in enforcing such a short ban. One day, in my opinion, isn't enough for this user to think his actions over. Ultimately, though, the decision is up to you. There's also a chance I am wrong, but please think this over and consider extending the duration of that user's block. One week seems appropriate. -- Ishikawa Minoru 17:54, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Noted the image for Amir Blumenfeld that you set to creative commons. As there are no articles linking to Mr. Blumenfeld's photo, is there a reason that a deletion was declined? --Dennis The Tiger (Rawr and stuff) 01:44, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

frustrated

You removed sock vandal reports from vandalism noticeboard, but my previous advice from ANI was to post on AVI. This is a real problem vandal and has been handled quickly before on AVI. It's such a waste of time yet so obvious. Did you read the request? kind regards. --Merbabu 12:00, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

As the intro on the page states, WP:AIV is only for obvious and persistent vandals. The edits by User:RealismIncorporated, User:Bogymen and User:CorrectOrPreferred don't seem to be obvious vandalism -- more like content dispute. Neither of them have been given a vandalism warning (User talk:RealismIncorporated, User talk:Bogymen, User talk:CorrectOrPreferred).
If the sockpuppetery and vandalism were very obvious (say, all the accounts created in past two or three days, editing the same article), I would have blocked the users. But, this is obviously not a case of clear vandalism. Even sockpuppetry allegations require more investigation -- WP:AIV is not the place for this.
A Checkuser or Request for comment would be better, if WP:ANI doesn't help you. utcursch | talk 12:38, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
It's been on ANI countless times and rfc have been logged. Did you see the rfc? It's a shame people like this are allowed to use red tape to waste everyone's time. THe accounts are created in the same day, same sorts of edits, and I get bored having to explain the history. What a waste of good editors' time. Who's side are you on? thanks --Merbabu 12:47, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
Utcurch, Merbabu is correct. These editors' socks have been succesfully dealt with on many occasions through WP:AIV, as previous reports to ANI suggested be done. The alternatives take too long and waste everyone's time. Everybody who watches this space already knows they're socks, and of whom. Check the banned users confirmed sock pages - they create new ones all the time, and it only takes them a few seconds to do so. You can't make a federal case about it involving multiple reporters and the noticeboards each time. If you feel you don't know enough about the situation and aren't willing to trust others and take action, at the very least, please don't remove them from WP:AIV yourself: other admins will see them and will block, as they have in the past.Proabivouac 23:16, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Ah - check user confirmed all. I don't post this to gloat, but just to follow up. I understand Utcursch and other admins's position - ie, they need to be conservative in their actions and maybe don't know about the ongoing DY71 puppetry. But, this is precisely how such socks get away with it. They know the red tape and make the most of it. Anyway, thanks for your help. WP:3RR, WP:SOCK and WP:IAR suggest we can revert socks indefinitely until they are blocked. We need to find a longer term solution. thanks and kind regards. --Merbabu 00:17, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

If we're going to have reports removed on procedural grounds (they aren't vandalism, so wrong page), then we need to have a new page just for reporting obvious socks in need of a speedy block. Even DavidYork71 and His excellency alone could warrant such pages, WP:AIDY/WP:AIHE.Proabivouac 00:32, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
The fastest way to get help against sockpuppets is to report the issue at WP:AN/I, and if that doesn't help, file a checkuser report. WP:AIV is only for vandalism reports. WP:AN/I will result in speedy blocks, if the case is easily recognized as a case of sockpuppetry; WP:RFCU will help in cases that require investigation. If I hadn't removed it, somebody else would have. The report was filed at 8:18 and I removed it at 8:49, because even after more than half an hour, no administrator was willing to take an action on it. utcursch | talk 04:42, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Help needed!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Utcursch, please can you block User:Itihaaskar he has been warned many times not to deleted cited and referenced material from the Jat people article yet he continues to delete and vandalise. He continues to abuse User:LRBurdak and remove other users referenced material contributions. As a Wikipedia Administrator it is your duty to do something about this vandal, please do something.--Peter johnson4 03:39, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Dear Utcursch, thankyou for your response. You are an Administrator and have commended User:LRBurdak work by giving him barnstars in the past. He constantly backs up he additions with references and for User:Itihaaskar to just delete the addition is vandalism. He or she should add their own references to rebuttal the point BUT deletion of clearly referenced and cited sections is Vandalism or basically vandalism. You have worked with User:LRBurdak in the past and have knowledge on the ethnic group of the Jat people. Please do something because other users addition are getting disrupted and deleted by User:Itihaaskar. You now aware and involved in the matter please take swift action.--Peter johnson4 06:03, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Dear Utcursch, thank you once again for your response. Ok for at least the time being as you have stated you can enforce the 3RR violation blocking rule. Please then enforce this rule to prevent the entire article from being hijacked so other users can edit. Please enforce the 3RR violation blocking rule give User:Itihaaskar notification if he reverts 3 times in a day he will be blocked. Enforce this rule on the Jat people article then this will solve 90% of the problem.--Peter johnson4 21:24, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Thankyou

Hey thanks for helping me with the Krystal Forscutt article. It's well on it's way to becoming a good article. She's quite popular is Australia so I was quite suprised that she didn't have an article about her (or a decent one anyway). Anyway, thanks.
