White Album 2 (ホワイトアルバム2, Howaito Arubamu 2) is a trilogy of Japanese adult visual novels developed by the visual novel company Leaf for the Microsoft Windows PC, and is the sequel to Leaf's earlier visual novel, White Album.[1] The first part of the series, named White Album 2: Introductory Chapter, was released on March 26, 2010. The second part in the series is named White Album 2: Closing Chapter[2] and was released on December 22, 2011.[3] An all-ages PlayStation 3 version combining both chapters published by Aquaplus was released in 2012 and ported for PlayStation Vita in 2013. The gameplay of White Album 2 follows a linear plot line which offers pre-determined scenarios with courses of interaction. A television series anime adaptation aired in Japan between October and December 2013.

Gameplay

A scene in White Album 2 depicting the protagonist talking to both Setsuna Ogiso and Chikashi Hayasaka. The text can be visible at the bottom and some controls and menus are right-aligned at the bottom of this screen.

The gameplay in White Album 2 requires minimal interaction from the player as the player spends the majority of their time on reading the text that is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Unlike other visual novels, there is only one ending in Introductory Chapter and there are no choices for the player to select. In that regard, Introductory Chapter could be regarded as more like a movie than a video game. The player's only interaction during the "introductory chapter" and "mini after story" with the game is to click a button to advance the game by rolling the next line of text onto the screen, while both "closing chapter" and "coda" requires comprehensive multiple choice questions to handle the trend of the plot development.

Plot

Settings

White Album 2 takes place in the same setting as its predecessor with approximately ten years having been elapsed since the events of the first White Album.[4] Introductory Chapter begins during the second half of October.[5] Closing Chapter begins three years after the events of Introductory Chapter.[2]

Main Characters

Haruki Kitahara (北原 春希, Kitahara Haruki)
Voiced by: Takahiro Mizushima
The protagonist of White Album 2. He is a third year student at Hōjō High and a member of the light music club and has excellent grades. He dates Setsuna at one point, but in the end, he confesses to Kazusa Touma, and says she is the one he truly loves.[6] Haruki plays second guitar. A student with excellent grades, who's meddlesome and preachy. But for some reason, he's in the light music club. Lately he's been concentrating on practicing the guitar for the school festival, but he's not talented enough to go on stage. Haruki is surprisingly free with his emotions when involved in his love life. He is normally an energetic class president, but despite his intelligence and top grades, he is quite clueless when it comes to dealing with his love life. He likes to take charge and is extremely diligent in his work ethic and studying.[6][7]
Setsuna Ogiso (小木曽 雪菜, Ogiso Setsuna)
Voiced by: Madoka Yonezawa
Setsuna Ogiso is the main heroine. She is the triggering of the plot and the only character with an important role in all the routes, even more than Haruki himself. Setsuna is a third year student at Houjou High and has been Miss Houjou two years in a row and enjoys singing karaoke. She confesses to Haruki and becomes a couple with him, secretly knowing Kazusa and his feelings towards each other. In the end, she accepts that he has always loved Kazusa, but still comforts Haruki when he cries over Kazusa leaving. Setsuna is a very complex character as she can be seen as the main villain of the story depending on your point of view. She is beautiful and friendly when approached, yet places a wall between herself and others so she has no close friends. She refrains from making friends due to her troubled past during her years in middle school. However, she is this way precisely because she was consecutively voted as the prettiest girl in the school, and her classmates all expect her to be a fashionable, wealthy young lady. She shows great understanding after she knows that Haruki betrayed her, and she blames it all on herself. She decides to take whole responsibility and acts strong in front of Haruki and putting up fronts in general.  [4]
Kazusa Touma (冬馬 かずさ, Tōma Kazusa)
Voiced by: Hitomi Nabatame
Kazusa Touma is the secondary heroine and the most prominent love rival. In the anime she is ascended as the main heroine. She is a third year student at Houjou and is in the same class as Haruki. She often dozes off in, is late for, and skips class. She is a very talented pianist, and comes from a wealthy family. She is sometimes cruel to Haruki, but in the end, they both confess their feelings for each other. Kazusa is the daughter of a famous pianist, and a musical genius who dropped out of Houjou's music division. She is particularly annoyed with Haruki, who has been persistently pestering her for the past half year. However, once Haruki befriends her, she is a valuable ally for the cultural festival. When it comes to music, her passion and confidence is unrivaled.[8]
Io Mizusawa (水沢 依緒, Mizusawa Io)
Voiced by: Ikumi Nakagami
Io is a classmate of Setsuna's and used to be the captain of the basketball team.[9] Io was in the same class as Haruki during first year[9][10] although the two of have known each other since junior high.[10]
Takeya Iizuka (飯塚 武也, Iizuka Takeya)
Voiced by: Takuma Terashima
Takeya is a close friend of Haruki and is the president of the light music club.[5][9] Takeya plays the guitar[11] and is surprisingly popular with girls.[5]

Story

Introductory Chapter

The story of Introductory Chapter begins around the second half of October[5] with Haruki Kitahara and Takeya Iizuka troubled over the fact that all the band members they gathered for the school festival have left.[12] After a bit of hard work, Setsuna Ogiso and Kazusa Touma are recruited into the club. With Haruki, the three of them play together at the school festival.[5] They perform Yuki Morikawa's "White Album",[13] Rina Ogata's "Sound of Destiny", and an original song named "Todokanai Koi".[14][15] When the day draws to an end, Setsuna finds Haruki and then confesses to him and the two of them start going out together.[16]

Some time later, Setsuna decides to host a birthday party at her place.[17] While en route to Setsuna's place, Haruki remembers how much Setsuna wanted Kazusa to attend[18] and becomes concerned about whether Kazusa ever got the notice so he decides to go to Kazusa's place directly to see if she is around. What Haruki didn't know is that Setsuna hadn't invited Kazusa but instead was happily preparing the birthday party[19] just for him while saying "just the 2 of us".[20] Takahiro suspected she had invited just one person but considering the implications he decides not to say anything to their parents. Setsuna was expecting to have sexual intercourse with Haruki.[21] This won't be revealed to Haruki until the reader reaches the common route in Closing Chapter, where Setsuna tells him she had been waiting ever since her 18th birthday to give her body to him. The fact that Haruki was the only one supposed to attend her birthday will be disclosed to him in Coda when Setsuna mournfully tells Haruki about only wanting him there for her birthday and his mind snaps back to her insisting on everyone being there that day. Haruki finds Yōko Touma, Kazusa's mother, and explains to her that Kazusa is supposed to go to a birthday party. Yōko tells Haruki that Kazusa will be living with her next month[22] and that she will not make the party because her plane arrives an hour after it has started. Haruki goes to pick Touma at the airport and tries to convince Touma to go to the party.[23] The two get into an argument. Haruki asks why she hadn't told him she's leaving and she says it is him who disappeared from her sight, going somewhere she couldn't reach.[24][25] Kazusa runs away but not before the two confess their love for one another and Kazusa tells Haruki having him at hand yet never be able to have him had been a nightmare for her. While Haruki admits he also loves Setsuna,[26] he says he had fallen in love with Kazusa first and didn't know she had loved him all this time. Kazusa explains how the fact that he had accepted another girl has made her heart shred into pieces every single day.[27] They kiss each other but Kazusa gets mad at how good he is at it as he has kissed Setsuna countless times and runs away asking him how much more far behind Setsuna he wants her to be.[28] Meanwhile, Setsuna is left alone on her birthday as she hadn't invited anyone but Haruki.

Despite recent events, Haruki does not break up with Setsuna during the following weeks that take place until Kazusa's departure. The day before her plane takes off Kazusa shows up to school one last time to tell Setsuna that she will be leaving for Vienna[29] and then never returns to school again. Kazusa does not show up to their school's graduation ceremony but when Haruki is told by Setsuna that Kazusa was at school at one point because she found a letter from Kazusa,[30] Haruki runs all across the city looking for her. He goes home fruitless but receives a call from Kazusa and finds her standing near his house and the two of them reconcile and have sexual intercouse. Kazusa cries but tells Haruki not to cry in front of the girl he threw away.[31] Kazusa also tells Haruki she bitterly regrets not having confessed to him before Setsuna.[32][33] On the next day, Setsuna convinces Haruki to go to the airport together to see Kazusa off even though it was such a cruel departure for him.[34] Before she leaves Japan, Kazusa and Haruki kiss. The chapter ends with Setsuna embracing and consoling Haruki after Kazusa has parted.

Closing Chapter

This is the longest and main part of White Album 2, talking about Haruki and Setsuna's university life. There are 4 routes available in this part (Koharu, Mari, Izumi and Setsuna) and each one of them has its own ending between Haruki and the heroine he chooses to spend the rest of his life with. There is also a common route ending where Haruki remains indecisive, he can't choose any of the heroines. In this ending Setsuna will continue trying to get Haruki and the final scene is Setsuna falling asleep on Haruki's shoulder. As the main heroine, Setsuna's route is connected to the Coda part. The story starts 3 years after Introductory Chapter. Even though Setsuna has been trying her best to become Haruki's girlfriend during all this time Haruki keeps avoiding her to the point that normally he doesn't even answer Setsuna's calls. Setsuna had chosen to study economics (even though she wanted to study English or literature) because she wanted to spend more time with Haruki. However, 1 year after Introductory Chapter Haruki takes another step in ignoring Setsuna by changing departments for that only purpose. That behaviour makes Setsuna enter into a depression and as Takeya (Haruki's best friend) says also makes her "cry like there's no tomorrow". At one point Setsuna can't take it anymore and runs away from home. Haruki receives a call from Setsuna's family. They assumed she had completely lost track of time while being with her boyfriend Haruki. Setsuna had kept lying to her family all these years, telling them she spent a lot of time with him while in reality she either spent that time alone sulking or her friends Io and Takeya would appear trying to cheer her up. Haruki apologises to her family and lies saying she is with him. After a while Haruki finds Setsuna. He makes up an excuse for her on the spot, telling her what she should say to her family. She should tell them they had gone to an art gallery and to eat dinner at a restaurant. After that they had lost track of time and missed the last train as a result. However, Setsuna gets deeply hurt by his words. She tells him she can't tell them such a happy-sounding thing[35] because if she does her tears won't stop flowing and her parents will realize she's lying and how miserable she feels.[36] She then tells him it's fine, he can just stop worrying about her and continue ignoring her like he always does.[37] After that Haruki will start getting closer to her little by little. Io and Takeya force Haruki to take Setsuna to a restaurant and to a hotel. After Haruki and Setsuna eat they fully reconcile in the nearest bridge. Setsuna tells Haruki she had been waiting to give her body to him for 3 years ever since her 18th birthday.[38] She says that for three years she had given it her all trying to shorten the distance between them but he wouldn't even let her touch him like she's touching him now.[39][40] Haruki apologises and tells Setsuna he will forget about Kazusa and make her the only girl for him. Setsuna knows he's lying but she doesn't let it get to her. However, in the hotel Haruki makes a fatal mistake. In one of his part-time jobs he had been told to write an article about the famous pianist Kazusa. Haruki puts that article on the bed. Setsuna finds it and explodes. She tells him how she had actually bought a copy of his article. How she had read it dozens of times and each time she would be drenched in tears.[41] The pain she would feel would be unbearable and she wouldn't be able to sleep.[42] It is because his words in that article are the same as they were 3 years ago. He still loves Kazusa. After crying bitterly she shouts calling him a liar many times and wonders why after 3 years of complete dedication to him he still remains indecisive, torn between both girls.

The common route ends there. After that Haruki decides to sort out his feelings and for the first time actually devote his whole heart to a heroine (or no one, leading to the common route ending explained before). If he chooses Setsuna and her daily efforts to reconcile are finally accepted by Haruki Setsuna achieves happiness as Haruki's girlfriend. Setsuna becomes able to sing again and together with Haruki perform a one-song concert at their university that is loved by everyone. Setsuna admits she's never been so happy in her entire life and it even becomes somewhat problematic for Haruki as she sometimes sings when they're kissing each other.[43][44][45] However, if he chooses one of the side-heroines (Mari, Chiaki or Koharu) Haruki will enter their routes and Setsuna will sink deeper into a depression.

Coda

The story started one year after Haruki's bachelor graduation. Haruki and Setsuna have been a couple for two years. Haruki now works as a staff member in a magazine agency. Haruki had planned a Christmas trip to Strasbourg (France) because of work.[46] Setsuna gets worried as she hasn't seen Haruki for almost a week and goes to France chasing after him.[47] Setsuna is happy Haruki's boss sent him there as now she gets to spend Christmas with him in France. Haruki accidentally found Kazusa needs help when he was on the street in the Christmas Eve. This made Haruki late to go to Church with Setsuna. The next day, Haruki realized that the person he was told to interview is Kazusa. After the interview, Kazusa decided to give her first domestic piano concert in Japan. Setsuna still hadn't been informed about this until (either) she sees the magazine article written by Haruki (or Haruki told Setsuna prior to this, depending on choices made by the player). Since then, Setsuna decided not to contact Haruki anymore until she's able to figure out a way to handle their relationship.

Yōko realized that she had leukemia (diagnosed by Dr. Takayanagi) and may have to live domestically for her rest of life. However, Yōko has her awareness of one thing: her daughter, Kazusa, is still not independent enough to handle her self-living due to her debilitated mood led from her expectations of Haruki. Yōko then decided to do something to let Kazusa either give up or actually date with Haruki. Yōko started cooperating with the magazine agency where Haruki works. This leads to Haruki's several arranged interview with Kazusa, including the interview arranged in Strasbourg. Yōko later asked Kazusa to move to the same apartment where Haruki lives and to be Haruki's new neighborhood. Note: 1) These are all out of Setsuna's awareness; 2) Haruki and Kazusa were kept secret from Yōko's medical condition at this moment.

Prior to Kazusa's incoming first domestic piano concert, the game process during this moment leaves several events and choices to the player (from Haruki's perspective), interfering the trend of incoming plots. Kazusa initially only wants Haruki to attend her concert. However, Haruki chose not to face the music (face the truth that it will be his last meeting with Kazusa) but to meet Setsuna (on her business trip to Ōsaka) instead.

  • Note: Based on the choices done prior to this point, Haruki will either propose to Setsuna or admit the truth about his recent interview with Kazusa. The first will lead to Setsuna's route, while the latter will lead to Kazusa's. However, even though the route has been settled at this point, there are two endings in each route and were still led from choices made prior to this point. The true endings won't be triggered if your route is of someone but has less responsibility rate (calculated by choices made prior to this point) on her.

Kazusa went crazy since she realized Haruki's absence, and she does not know Yōko's whereabouts. Actually, Yōko lost her consciousness and was sent to the hospital where Dr. Takayanagi works. Haruki found Kazusa which was absent-minded at her childhood residence for days. Haruki was hit several times immediately as soon as Kazusa realized that the visitor is Haruki. Later Kazusa calmed down a little and asked Haruki for a relationship of fake lovers (including having her on-site right now).

  • If Haruki accepted Kazusa's request, plus Haruki's prior proposal to Setsuna in Ōsaka, this will trigger Kazusa's normal ending, which will be addressed below:

In this route (known as the cheating route) Haruki decides to be with both Setsuna and Kazusa, which causes him to mentally break down. At one point Haruki and Kazusa have sexual intercourse. After that, he goes back to Setsuna but doesn´t tell her what he's been doing with Kazusa. Setsuna is very happy they're about to get married (he had proposed to Setsuna a few days before right after receiving oral sex from her). Setsuna talks about shopping and cooking but Haruki would rather eat outside. Setsuna explains to Haruki they shouldn't as they have to start saving money now that they're getting married. Haruki acquiesces to her request. After they've finished eating Setsuna washes the dishes and Haruki tells her she did a good job. Haruki then starts thinking about how much he loves Setsuna.[48] He loves the homely Setsuna, the Setsuna with the smell of life about her. The family-oriented Setsuna that gives him relief, he loves her from the bottom of his heart.[49] Setsuna notices there's something weird going on with Haruki. She says he can tell her anything that may release his anxieties. Actually, he can release anything in her. After that, Setsuna gets closer to Haruki and they have sexual intercourse. Meanwhile, Kazusa is in the adjacent room crying while listening to their moans. She touches herself while shouting Haruki's name (the fact that she is living next door is unknown to both Haruki and Setsuna). Haruki later returns to being with Kazusa. She claims she can never forget about him.[50] She says that him as the pet owner may have several dogs, but for her, he is the only master in the world.[51] Haruki later goes back to spending some time with Setsuna. While she's gone he receives a call from Kazusa, who is crying and can barely talk. Amidst sobs, she congratulates him for his imminent marriage with Setsuna[52] (Haruki had not told her he was getting married). Setsuna, Haruki's friends and Ogiso's family had been celebrating their engagement. Haruki already starts showing symptoms of mentally breaking down. He thinks about Setsuna, the secrets he's keeping from her and his guilt. In his own words, his body and mind are fighting each other, he can no longer maintain a physical and mental balance and everything ceases functioning.[53] When he meets Kazusa, she declares that she is different from her mother. Unlike her, there is only one person in the world that Kazusa can call a man[54] and it will always be like that. According to Haruki she has a very narrow world. Shortly afterwards he announces he doesn't want her to leave. Kazusa then asks him why didn't he say so at the beginning,[55] he always does the same thing. Kazusa asks Haruki if he has thought about going oversees with her. He hasn't thought about it. She utters that's the same as not thinking about a future in which he leaves Japan to go with her.[56] Haruki apologises and starts thinking about Kazusa´s words, wondering if leaving Japan is even a possible course to follow.[57] Afterwards, kazusa states that now she is the happiest she's ever been in her entire life.[58]

However, Kazusa will soon start getting worried about their future. Haruki avoids the confrontation by having sexual intercourse with her. While teasing her body he declares that she shouldn't be thinking about anything.[59] According to him, as long as they're able to continue doing the same everything will be all right.[60] Despite having said that, Haruki's subsequent monologue reveals he doesn't completely believe his own words. He's trying to believe it himself by making Kazusa believe.[61] After a while, Haruki explains to Kazusa that life is simple and that everything gets solved before you even notice it.[62] He also claims that "somehow" everything will work out.[63] As he keeps getting more and more broken, he will continue seeking refuge in sexual intercourse to avoid facing his dilemma. Setsuna, her family and Haruki's friends are still very happy about his imminent marriage with Setsuna. After some time has passed, Haruki decides to take Kazusa north, to the hot springs as he wants to be somewhere where they'll be "less conspicuous". There, he will continue having lots of sexual intercourse with Kazusa, but after a few days Kazusa will finally realize she has to face reality and stay away from Haruki. As he keeps running away and he's too hesitant on getting his proposal withdrawn from Setsuna, that leads to Kazusa's concern for Haruki's future, realizing that with her he'd live a miserable life. And because she loves him more than anything, she decides to sacrifice herself by not being by his side (there is a direct reference to this in Kazusa's true ending). When Haruki wakes up, he notices Kazusa isn't there anymore, so he starts looking for her without putting on any clothes in broad daylight and with people staring at him. He is finally able to find her. Kazusa says that, of course, she doesn't want to go,[64] what she wants is to always be with him in a world where it is just the two of them.[65] But as Kazusa explains, it's all falling apart, because whenever Haruki's with her, he's rapidly falling apart.[66] Ultimately, Haruki is destryoing himself.[67] Kazusa had been the first one to break[68] Initially they had agreed to be together for just winter but Kazusa had abandoned that idea and changed it to always be with him. She tells Haruki that just until last night she would have run away with him; and as long as he wanted to be with her, she would follow him anywhere.[69] Because even that kind of life of constantly running away would make her the most happy[70] if she's with him.

The determination to part with him was not from long ago, it had actually happened right now.[71] It happened just minutes before, the moment she saw his face, when she saw his smile[72] (his pitiful appearance and his change from a horrified look to a smile just because she had gone for a few minutes, showing his lack of inner peace). As Kazusa explains it was at that moment that she finally understood.[73] She realized that compared to Haruki obtaining normal happiness and living a long life always smiling, the immediate happiness she can provide is insignificant.[74] As she utters, she was made painfully aware of it.[75] Kazusa really wanted to make Haruki happy.[76][77] But no matter how hard she tried, she wasn't able to achieve that.[78] She laments that her most valued treasure in the whole world, she'll destroy it if she takes it.[79] She would try to take care of it, she would desperately try to protect it, but she would end up smashing it to pieces.[80] That's why she has to return this treasure to the person that can cherish it properly, to the person (Setsuna) that can actually protect him.[81] As Kazusa says, she broke him, but Setsuna can save him. She cannot protect Haruki, Setsuna is the only one who can.[82]

Kazusa also admits that even if it lasted just one night she must have been the happiest bride in the world). Note that in this route Haruki loves Setsuna and Kazusa and has been with both of them. The entire scenario of this route to this ending is explicit in the PC version of this game. After Kazusa's second domestic concert, Kazusa went back to Vienne. Haruki later decided to split up with Setsuna. However, Setsuna managed to be a part of his life and one year later they have already reconciled and Haruki is back to saying he loves Setsuna.

  • If Haruki rejected, a following multiple choice question appears to let Haruki explain the reason, leading to other endings (will be explained below) depending on everything you have chosen prior to this point.
    • If Haruki's reason is his love to Setsuna, plus his maximum responsibility rate to Kazusa till this point (certainly proposed to Setsuna in Ōsaka), this will go to Setsuna's normal ending (which is really short): Kazusa went crazy and immediately went back to Europe (certainly no 2nd domestic concert). Haruki later married Setsuna even though Kazusa is still Haruki's "most fond of". This ending indicates that Haruki has lack of necessary courage to face his own heart, he still loves both Setsuna and Kazusa in a romantic way.
    • If Haruki's reason is his love to Setsuna, plus his maximum responsibility rate to Setsuna till this point (certainly not proposed to Setsuna in Ōsaka), this will go to Setsuna's true ending (will be addressed below).
    • Only if Haruki has his maximum responsibility rate to Kazusa till this point (certainly proposed to Setsuna in Ōsaka), Haruki could have a choice of reason: "unable to lie to Kazusa". This leads to Kazusa's true ending (will be addressed below).

Kazusa chilled herself out and later started preparing her 2nd domestic piano concert. Haruki later met Yōko at the hospital and was informed about Yōko's medical situation. Haruki then work as Yōko's vice secretary for a while, plus his previously arranged work of continuing interviewing Kazusa (with certain help on managing her daily lives). Apparently, Kazusa and Haruki went back to normal friends. However, one night while they were having supper:

  • In Setsuna True route, Kazusa asked Haruki about what was going on with her mom Yōko. She assumed that Haruki didn't tell her the truth, and she later went to see Yōko during the midnight. Haruki run out searching for Kazusa's whereabouts when he woke up and realized Kazusa's absence.
  • In Kazusa True route, Haruki received Takeya's phone call. Takeya invited Haruki to their party celebrating Haruki's proposal to Setsuna. Note that Kazusa know nothing about such proposal until she heard such from the speaker phone. Kazusa suddenly went desperate and tried to run out of the apartment. Haruki tried his best to calm her down (to hinder Kazusa from knowing Yōko's medical situation, as what Yōko requested). Later, Haruki went sleep for a short while. Kazusa then went to see Yōko during the midnight.

Haruki woke up and realized Kazusa's absence. He then run out searching for Kazusa's whereabouts. Haruki later found Yōko (as informed by Yōko's prime secretary Kudō) in the hospital and was informed that Yōko lost her conscious in front of Kazusa, leading to Kazusa's awareness of Yōko's leukemia.

Haruki later made his judgement call:

  • In Setsuna True route, Setsuna takes the role of main character and Haruki steps aside of the conflict by asking Setsuna to look after Kazusa. This makes Setsuna help Kazusa on facing her future livings. After a lot of drama between the heroines, they finally become friends again and start cooperating on their EP album with Haruki. Kazusa admits she loves Haruki deeply, that she'll always love him[83] and that she will never be able to fall in love with someone else. Even so, she gives Haruki her blessing as he has decided to be with Setsuna. Later, Haruki proposes to Setsuna and eases her mind by telling her he will always be friends with Kazusa and nothing more. Even though Setsuna has a short outburst towards Haruki, she also says he is "the person I love the most".[84] The fact that Haruki had kept thinking about Kazusa[85] and that he had even concealed his meetings with her for a while had really hurt Setsuna. After telling him how cruel he had been and how much she had been suffering all the time because of him she accepts,[86] leading to their final marriage. In this ending Haruki truly loves just Setsuna in a romantic way, he is no longer torn between both girls. Kazusa later decides to stay in Japan to take care of her mom Yōko. The story continues in "Mini After Story".
  • In Kazusa True route, Haruki decides to detour his life towards Kazusa. He is no longer torn between his feelings for Setsuna and Kazusa and decides to give his whole heart to Kazusa. This route will be addressed below:

Haruki and Kazusa struggle with their sense of guilt. She once intended to run back to Europe as she feels Haruki would be miserable if he stayed with her, but she later goes back from the airport. For the first time Haruki decides to break up with Setsuna. Setsuna can feel his heart does not belong to her anymore so she tries to stop him, telling him they can change the pace of their relationship if he wants, she will always keep up with him.[87] Even so, he doesn't change his mind. She shouts he can't break up with her and that she doesn't want to listen.[88] She tells him to go away, she shouts she's not hearing anything[89] and she begs him to stop. Haruki finally tells her he wants to break up with her and Setsuna makes her final great cry.[90] After that, there is a sad flashback of all the promises Haruki had made to Setsuna for the past three years (among others, that she was the only girl for him, that he was fine without Kazusa and finally that he would marry her). Setsuna asks him what can she do to make him retract his words and come back to her,[91] she asks him to tell her what she must do to fix it.[92] His mind doesn't change.

After the request of terminating his proposal with Setsuna on Valentine's Day has been finally fulfilled, he decides to tell the truth to both the Ogiso family and his friends who support Setsuna, which would make him cut his ties with them. Ogiso Akina realizes that her daughter Setsuna was failing to handle her daily matters. Ogiso Susumu, Setsuna's father, thought that he had to talk with Haruki. Akina asks Tomo, one of Setsuna's friends, to get out for dinner to avoid seeing Susumu and Haruki's meeting. Haruki conceals the truth of what had happened with Kazusa and Yōko and just says that his change of mind was the only reason of the proposal withdrawal. Ogiso Takahiro eavesdropped on their meeting, leading to his rage against Haruki. Haruki gets beaten fiercely by Takahiro when he was about to leave. Setsuna realizes what was going on and runs back home but failed to find Haruki on site. Setsuna had defended Haruki and ganged up on her family instead. She grabs the medic box, runs out and finally finds Haruki on the street. She heals Haruki's wounds even though Haruki refuses her. Later, Setsuna asks whether she could still be friends with him and Kazusa. She then says she had thought she would always be living with Haruki as a couple, but if they can't... she then stops mid-sentence and has a sudden outburst where she shows how painful and frustrating it is that he broke up with her.[93] Haruki asserts its impossibility and tells her he is moving in with Kazusa (in Vienne). Setsuna says she will go with him,[94] but Haruki does not let her because she can't abandon her family, friends, job... when she's not even the bride. Also, because even if she didn't have to give up on anything Kazusa does not want her to come. Haruki later goes back to his apartment.

Next day, Haruki goes to the farewell party held by his colleagues as they know that Haruki is about to resign his job and go to Vienne; meanwhile, Kazusa talks with her mother. In order to be with Haruki she abandons her sick mother.[95] Kazusa later has a meeting with Setsuna. Setsuna says she is very glad Kazusa is doing so well, she is famous, talented, beautiful and she recently got... a boyfriend (sour tone). She asks her why must she hog all the happiness, she has Haruki, she has everything. Setsuna explains to Kazusa that she is very broken and that she is suffering from memory loss. She has become unable to work and she keeps repeating things she has said because she does not remember anything. Then she says it can actually be a good thing to break down.[96] According to her, if she completely breaks down and becomes unable to live without Haruki[97] (because she can't live by herself anymore), then Haruki may feel pity for her and stay by her side.[98] She tells Kazusa that she may actually get Haruki and win in the end.[99] Kazusa says that even so, she won't give up on Haruki.[100] Kazusa then almost mutilates her hands as recompense but got immediately prevented by Setsuna. This made Setsuna see how serious Kazusa was to be with Haruki. Kazusa goes to see Haruki. She tells him Setsuna got hurt so much because of her, yet nothing changed in her heart.[101] She also says that she had tried to protect him and because of that she had ended up hurting Setsuna even more.[102] According to Kazusa Haruki is that important to him, that is how much she means to him.[103] In order to be with Haruki, Kazusa had abandoned her sick mother and destroyed her friend's life, she even almost mutilates her hands.

Setsuna later walks alone on the street in a totally desperate mood and gets hit by a car; however, she just keeps walking away and wandering on the street. Next day, Haruki is unable go to Kazusa's 2nd domestic piano concert due to a sudden interrogative call from Mizusawa Io claiming Setsuna's missing. Haruki later successfully contacts Setsuna on the phone and finds Setsuna at where they had initially recovered their relationship during their university life. It was the bridge she held so dear in her heart as he had promised Setsuna he would forget about Kazusa and start a new life as a couple with her. Setsuna accepts her fate and blesses Haruki's future life. After Haruki leaves, Setsuna loses her consciousness and falls onto the snowy ground but gets rescued by her family (note that Setsuna already phoned her family about her whereabouts). Three months later, Haruki terminates his contract with his landlord and goes back to Vienne with Kazusa. Kazusa says farewell to Yōko at Narita airport. Kazusa confesses her true feelings to Haruki, saying he had made her "the happiest girl in the world".[104] She says that it had caused Setsuna to become "the most miserable girl in the world", but even if it causes misfortune to everyone she will still relish in it from the bottom of her heart.[105] The last two phrases of her confession told Haruki that having him return to her side had made her the happiest she's ever been in her entire life and she deeply thanks him for that.[106][107] Two years afterwards, Haruki finds in his email a video message where a depressed Setsuna is singing while playing Haruki's guitar (in closing chapter it was shown she needs Haruki to sing). She had spent that time learning how to play his guitar, but unlike her usual love song for Haruki "unreachable love", this time she sings a love song devoid of hope which focuses on the past (she says "I still love you" and that she will never forget the first time they kissed and how gentle he always was with her). It should be noted that this ending is not available until the current game configuration has any record of finished Kazusa Normal Ending (i.e. you have to finish Kazusa's normal ending prior to Kazusa's true ending). The story continues in "Mini After Story".

Mini After Story

This release is the latest installment in the White Album 2 series. Just like the previous ones it has Maruto Fumuaki as its writer but this time the player does not have to make any in-game choices, like in Introductory Chapter. This short all ages fan disc contains the official epilogues to the true Coda endings. Both stories take place during the last days of the year (Setsuna's epilogue starts on December 21 and ends on December 29 while Kazusa's story takes place from the 25th to 31 December). Unlike the previous installments of White Album 2 Mini After Story does not have drama and shows that each heroine gets her best possible outcome and happily ever after when Haruki has chosen to give his whole heart to her.

  • Kazusa True Ending Epilogue: Haruki and Kazusa already lived together in Europe for 3 years and decide to visit Japan to have Christmas Eve with Yōko. Kazusa is a successful pianist in Vienne and Haruki is her manager (they have merged their public and private lives and are always together). At the beginning they are bickering. After a while they go a the hotel. Haruki is in the bathroom having a bath. Kazusa enters to "apologise" to him. She even cries. They "hold each other tight". The next morning, Youko's assistant comes to fetch them and has to listen through the door as Kazusa grumbles that she doesn't want to get out of bed, Haruki was quite enthusiastic until the small hours of the night, can't they stay a while longer... They have dinner with her mother. There are talks of marriage, Kazusa says they are as good as married anyways. They sip 1989 vintage red wine and Haruki reminisces that it's the year he was born. Kazusa and Haruki still feel guilt about what had happened before they left Japan but it turns out Yōko has tried her best to ask Ogiso family and Setsuna's friends for forgiveness during these years. Kazusa finally realizes the essence of her relationship with her mom Yōko. Later, Kazusa gets all emotional and expresses openly affection and gratitude to her mother for the first time in her life. There's a conversation between Kazusa and Haruki on the day after the dinner with Youko. Haruki wants to go out in the city. Kazusa says there's no place she wishes to go or a person to see. Haruki thinks about Setsuna, who they haven't seen for six months, the miraculous visit in Vienna half a year ago, the unexpected guest, the making up (Setsuna visited them and they became friends again). On the day after the dinner, one of her first arguments against going out is that it's tiring, she'd rather stay in and "hold Haruki's thing in her mouth." He embarrassedly says that'd be even more tiring. Haruki invites Kazusa to the school where it all started. There he tells her everything has been prepared for the wedding, and the wedding dress is waiting in the adjacent classroom - they are going to get hitched right now! Kazusa can't quite conceal her happiness... In the background the voices of their friends can be heard, who say that everything is ready. Note: The mini CD story from C91 (audio only) tells what happens 1 year after Kazusa's Mini After Story (just for Kazusa, not Setsuna), taking place 9 years after Introductory Chapter (as it is set in 2007 storywise): It's December 31, 2016. Haruki and Kazusa are in their house in Vienne. Haruki has trouble dragging Kazusa out of bed, as usual. She is still a concert pianist and he her manager. They receive a package from Youko, a gift she sends from Japan containing traditional Japanese New Year food. They talk about the good old times (Setsuna is never mentioned and we still don't know how she's doing in Japan). Haruki convinces Kazusa to practice, but she drags him along and starts teaching him the piano. He finds it difficult; she says he should do better, since he listens to the best performer in the world every day (they continue spending all their time together). Haruki says she's not at that level yet. Kazusa starts playing. She says something to Haruki - "You gave meaning to my playing. That's why my piano is for you". With perfect timing, it starts snowing. They admire the snow and discuss wishes for the new year. Kazusa looks at Haruki and tells him she already has everything she wants. They welcome the new year and Kazusa initiates foreplay.
  • Setsuna True Ending Epilogue: Haruki and Setsuna are happily married and have successful careers in publishing and public relations, respectively. At the very beginning we can see Setsuna who is sleeping in Haruki's apartment (it has been their apartment ever since Haruki had asked Setsuna for marriage and they live together). Haruki wakes her up. Setsuna's mother visits them and they talk. Setsuna works as a representative for a company called "Knights Record". Haruki and Setsuna have been marrried for a year. They have a party with Takeya and Io, who are finally getting married. They are on good terms with Kazusa, who is a successful pianist in Vienne. They even receive a postcard from Kazusa. Both Haruki and Setsuna are working for the same companies as before. There's a scene of Haruki chatting with his colleagues on Christmas Eve, and they ask him about Setsuna and mention with envy that as well as beautiful, she's well known in the business circles. When they finish packing all their stuff to transfer to the new place, Haruki thinks about the seven years spent in this cramped room. They are happy that they've finished moving all their stuff on schedule, when earlier in the week it seemed impossible; it's six in the morning, and there are three hours until the contractor comes to finish the proceedings. Setsuna asks Haruki what he wants to do: "Have breakfast, have a bath, or...ME?". Of course, he says "Setsuna", but now's not the time. Setsuna is extremely happy they are getting a bigger apartment so a third member can join and live with them. Haruki thinks her happiness is just due to them getting a better apartment. Haruki invites Setsuna for a walk, and they go to the playground where they met such a long time ago. There Setsuna explains everything to Haruki: actually, she's already pregnant. Haruki is beyond happy. Setsuna congratulates him for being a father and deeply thanks him. Now they are three. The story concludes with a happy Setsuna holding her and Haruki's baby (gender in not said).

Development

The director, artist, and character designer for White Album 2 is Takeshi Nakamura[2] who had previously worked on Leaf's other games such as December When There Is No Angel[108] and the PlayStation 3 port of Tears to Tiara. The scenario for White Album 2 is written by Fumiaki Maruto and Kikakuya.[109] The pair has worked together before on other visual novels such as Kono Aozora ni Yakusoku o.[110] The producer for White Album 2 is Naoya Shimokawa.[4]

According to Shimokawa, Maruto was the one who came up with the original design and concept for White Album 2.[4] After hearing the details from Maruto, Shimokawa felt that Maruto may be able to create a game that surpassed the original and decided to run with the idea.[4] When Nakamura was told that he would be the artist for the game, he went to speak with Hisashi Kawata, the artist for the original White Album, Kawata stated that he wanted to see the painful winter images that Nakamura would create.[111] Nakamura admits that because White Album 2 is a sequel that he does feel some pressure about the work.[111] Despite being busy with Kimi ga Yobu, Megido no Oka de and the PlayStation 3's Tears to Tiara, Nakamura went ahead and created the character designs for the game even though no one had asked him for them.[111]

When asked about the release date of the second part of the game, Shimokawa stated that it would be nice to release it some time during the winter season to align with the feelings that the title "White Album" evokes.[108] Shimokawa believes that the scenario should be all complete by then and that it would come down to whether the art is completed in time or not.[108] Unlike December When There is No Angel where there were two artists, Nakamura is alone this time and has to work on both the heroines and the supporting characters, making it a rather big effort.[108]

Release history

A preorder campaign for Introductory Chapter began on September 25, 2009.[112] Preorders that were received within an unspecified time period received a chibi model figure of Setsuna Ogiso.[108][112] Both the limited and regular editions of Introductory Chapter was originally planned to be released on February 26, 2010 but it was delayed,[113] Introductory Chapter officially went gold on March 12, 2010[109] and was then released two weeks later on March 26, 2010.[113] The limited edition of the game includes a hardcover novel with it.[108][112] The novel is named Yuki ga Toke, Soshite Yuki ga Furu Made (雪が解け、そして雪が降るまで), and was written by Maruto and illustrated by Nakamura.[112] The novel that comes with Introductory Chapter is told from a different perspective.[1] The novel that comes with Closing Chapter is a story set between the events of Introductory Chapter and the second game. Closing Chapter was released on December 22, 2011.[3]

Music

Introductory Chapter has three theme songs, the opening theme "Todokanai Koi" (届かない恋), the ending theme "Twinkle Snow", and the insert song "After All ~Tsuzuru Omoi~" (After All ~綴る想い~). Both the opening theme and insert song is sung by Rena Uehara.[114] The ending theme is performed by Akari Tsuda.[114] Shinya Ishikawa composed both "Todokanai Koi" and "After All: Tsuduru Omoi" while Junya Matsuoka composed "Twinkle Snow".[118] Matsuoka handled the arrangement of "Todokanai Koi" and Michio Kinugasa arranged "Twinkle Snow" and "After All: Tsuduru Omoi".[118] A CD single containing all three songs was released on May 26, 2010.[114] The single peaked at 65th place in Oricon's rankings for one week.[119]

The opening theme to Closing Chapter, "Shiawase na Kioku" (幸せな記憶), was also sung by Rena Uehara.[120]

The anime series uses "Todokanai Koi '13" (届かない恋 '13) as the opening theme and "Closing '13" and "Sayonara no Koto" (さよならのこと) as ending themes, all three performed by Rena Uehara.

Reception

Introductory Chapter tied for second place in bishōjo game preorders in Japan between the months of December 2009 and January 2010.[121] It was the second most widely sold PC game in March 2010 on Getchu.com.[122]
