Media namespace

[edit]

What are pages in the Media namespace written in? Are they written in wikitext? If not, what are they written in? Gioguch (talk) 02:49, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Gioguch: I'm not aware of a "media" namespace. for media files in the "file" namespace, see help:media. For a list of namespaces, see Wikipedia:namespace. Media files are not usually "written" by humans. Instead, the are created by audio or video software. -Arch dude (talk) 03:41, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude and Gioguch: The namespace "Media" appears to be an alias of the file namespace. Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 06:01, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Victor Schmidt mobil, Arch dude, and Gioguch: A link with the "Media:" prefix bypasses the file description page, and takes you directly to the image. Click on these links to see the difference: File:Example.jpg and Media:Example.jpg -- John of Reading (talk) 07:03, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@John of Reading, Victor Schmidt mobil, and Arch dude: So if the "Media:" prefix takes you directly to the image, then is that page written in wikitext? If not, what script is it written in? Gioguch (talk) 16:01, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, all. @Gioguch: The various media you upload into the "file" namespace can be retrieved and viewed three ways. When retrieved with the "File:" prefix into a wikipedia page using wikitext, you get an embeddable (and possibly converted) version. When retrieved into a browser window using the "File:" prefix, you get the image embedded into its description page. When using the "Media:" prefix, the image file itself is sent from the server to you browser without embellishment. The image file itself is not usually written by a human, but is generated by the appropriate image creation software (e.g., Inkscape generates SVG and the software in you digital camera generates JPEG). Images may be in any of the formats listed at Help:Files. -Arch dude (talk) 16:03, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, all. @Arch dude: Now it totally makes sense why it's not possible to create or delete pages in the "Media:" namespace, because it is not generated by human, but is automatically generated. Gioguch (talk) 16:07, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Suspicious

[edit]

Hi, I just wanted to ask if two accounts with the exact same userpage appear suspicious? By chance, while I was welcoming and checking for possible vandalism from new users, I came accross two users with the same userpage having almost the same brief description: "Editor at the European Investment Bank." Is this concerning? What links can I read regarding proper use of accounts. Thank you. Chinogrids (talk) 14:01, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like Praxidicae already left a link on your talk page to our page on Wikipedia:Sockpuppetry, which describes proper and improper use of multiple accounts. Do you still have questions after reading that page? ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:23, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Good morning, I am a longtime supporter, with my money, of Wikipedia. I have been trying to figure out how to make a login so I can become a contributor. I am self-employed so I do not have a government, School, or large corporation email. I have tried a couple of times and I cannot figure out how to do so. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.121.247.230 (talk) 14:13, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You do not need to have a government, school, or corporate e-mail to create an account. You don't need to provide any e-mail address at all if you don't want to, although providing one will allow you to recover your account should you forget your password. If you want to provide an e-mail address so you can recover your password, any e-mail address will do. If you don't have an e-mail address, there are free services like hotmail or mail.com which will work. All you need to do to create an account is Click here, choose a username, and create a password. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:30, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

updating the information on my company because its not correct

[edit]

my company information is wrong how do I let them know or update it myself — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.200.101.195 (talk) 14:30, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Visit the talk page of the article about your company, type {{request edit}}, then say something like "X should be changed to Y because..." and cite some sources to verify the new information. Keep in mind that sources that are not affiliated with the company are preferred (rather than the company's website or press releases). ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:35, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also, please mention that you are affiliated with this company for transparency's sake, per Conflict of Interest Policy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Flowernerd (talkcontribs) 22:30, 23 September 2020 (UTC) Edit: I'm an idiot and I can't figure out how to make that link be a link. Also I forgot to sign my previous edit. Sorry. Flowernerd (talk) 22:33, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Flowernerd, you aren't an idiot. I fixed the link for you. The problem was you forgot a closing bracket, and had a bracket where you wanted a pipe. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 22:41, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

how do I delete my Wikipedia search history? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.11.10.224 (talk) 14:44, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia does not keep a log of your search history. You may need to clear your browser's history, and if you use Google for searching it may keep a separate log of your Google search history. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:38, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How do I add information?

[edit]

I was searching for information on Wallace Beery's early films. On 'Partners in Crime' you have the line: No synopsis available'. In searching for that info, I landed on an imaged page from April, 1928 of Variety, with a full review/synopsis. I would like to add it to your page. How do I do it?32.216.132.134 (talk) 14:55, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see that line in the article on Partners in Crime (1928 film), however I do see that it is missing a synopsis or plot summary. As for how to add it, read the article from Variety, then summarize it in your own words, adding a citation indicating that you got the information you added from that source. And, thank you for wanting to expand the article! ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:41, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
My understanding is that the film itself is considered the source for 'Plot summary' (synopsis), therefore sourcing isn't required; however, if you're basing the information from another source, citation is needed. 2606:A000:1126:28D:CD60:8A12:D70:9EBA (talk) 20:12, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If a Wikipedia editor watched the movie and wrote a synopsis, then no reference other than the movie itself is needed. However, if the Wikipedia editor is using information from a published source instead, then that source should be referenced. -Arch dude (talk) 00:47, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Already made a donation

[edit]

Wikipedia is invaluable and my contribution of £20 this month Of Sept 2020 is only a small contribution but I do resent being badgered for more as if I had made no contribution at all. Is it possible to discriminate between those who have made no recent donation and those that have? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.78.85.245 (talk) 16:34, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you create an account you can avoid being pestered for donations. David Biddulph (talk) 16:45, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As IPs can be used by multiple people and devices, there is no way to know if the person sitting at the computer at any moment has donated or not. As noted, if you create an account, you can turn the request messages off. 331dot (talk) 16:49, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your content

Your content is not true It is not a credible source. It is a biased source and these people do not state correct facts... people dont have proof that their content is true... Wikipedia does not deal in truth, but in what can be verified, because what is "true" is in eye of the beholder. Wikipedia does not claim to be free of bias; Wikipedia presents the sources so that readers can judge them for themselves. If an article has incorrect information, please discuss it on the article talk page, along with independent reliable sources to support it. 331dot (talk) 20:17, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

On August 4, the submission of a bio for Walter Paul Blass was rejected for inadequate footnoting. I have revised and added the footnotes but have not be able to enter the new footnote numbers in the text. Should I just re-upload the entire submission?

Early life and education Walter Blass was born in 1930 in Dinslaken, Germany. His Austrian father, Richard Blass, was an engineer at Humboldt Deutz Motoren in Duesseldorf, and later a patent attorney. The family fled to Belgium in 1935 as Hitler banned Jews from the practice of law, medicine and government. Five years later when Walter was 10, World War II broke out, and the family became refugees in France. Richard obtained American visas with the help of the Quakers in Marseille, <1,2> and by May 1941, succeeded in emigrating to New York. Walter went to sixth grade in NYC, junior high school in West Hartford and The Choate School <3> for three years and then Swarthmore College where he earned a B.A. with Honors in Economics in 1951. <4> He went on to graduate school at Princeton and Columbia University where he obtained his M.A. in International Economics in 1953. <5>

Career In 1954, Blass was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy and served as Commissary and Disbursing officer on the U.S.S. Orion for 18 months. On promotion to Lt. (j.g.) he was assigned to the U.S.S. Joyce, a Destroyer Radar vessel in the North Atlantic, as Supply Officer. In 1957, following his active service <6>, he became Assistant Desk Officer for Laos in Washington in the Foreign Aid Program <7>. In late 1958 he moved to New Jersey to take over his father’s place in the consulting firm because of the latter’s Amtrak train accident. In 1961, he was hired as one of the first three economists in the Bell System and was mentored by Robert K. Greenleaf. In 1966 he took a leave of absence to serve as Country Director for the Peace Corps in Afghanistan <8>. On his return in 1968, he moved to the New York Telephone subsidiary of AT&T where he served for 12 years as Director-Strategic Planning. <9> Blass returned to AT&T in 1982 following the breakup of AT&T by the Department of Justice. <10> He retired from AT&T in 1985 when he was appointed Executive-in-residence at Fordham University’s MBA program to teach the capstone course, but also to teach in their undergraduate program. In 1990, he became a Visiting Professor in the Grenoble Graduate School of Business in France where he also taught in Moscow, Mexico City, Belgrade, Singapore and Munich. <11> He concurrently started a consulting practice with clients such as AT&T International in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, as well as McKinsey, McDonnell Douglas and the CIA’s Program on Nuclear Non-Proliferation. He was asked by the American Management Association to conduct classes in Strategic Planning and gave lectures on the topic throughout the world. Princeton University asked him to interview prospective students from 2002 to 2018. Since 1972 he has been a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, <12> lecturing at 13 colleges and universities such as Earlham, Meredith, Lawrence University, Oklahoma Baptist, University of North Georgia, <12,13,14> Wheaton (IL) and Brevard College. He was asked to join the Board of Trustees at Guilford College in 1975 and was given Trustee Emeritus status after 43 years’ service <15>. He was asked to speak at Brevard College in February 2019. <16> He is listed in Google Scholar <17>, in American Men and Women in Science <18> and in Who’s Who in America currently. <19>

Personal life Blass married Janice Minott of Portland, ME, in 1954 and had three children: Kathryn, Christopher and Gregory. They were divorced in 1984.

Can't add anything to Talk:Islamorada, Florida

[edit]

I've been trying to add something on the "Talk:Islamorada, Florida" page. I've tried adding a discussion and replying to an existing discussion with no success. I get the message "New topic added to talk page," but I see no change on the page whatsoever. Reloading the page or using a new window doesn't help. I'm using Brave Browser 1.14.83 on Android 8.0.0.

Thanks,

The talk page is not protected, and you are not blocked or partially blocked, so you should be able to edit it. I just made a test comment, and it worked for me, but I'm using a totally different browser and a laptop computer, plus as an admin if it were protected (it's not) I'd be able to edit through the protection, so the fact that I was able to make a test comment doesn't tell you much. You were able to edit here, so whatever is occurring is not occurring everywhere. Maybe ask the people at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)? ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 23:05, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I tried it too -- worked fine for me. Since you can edit here, its not a problem with your browser, evidently. 2606:A000:1126:28D:CD60:8A12:D70:9EBA (talk) 00:59, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Question on how to submit my page on Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi there,

I have created a wikipedia page. How do I submit it to Wikipedia? I have saved and published it - but I cannot find this page on Google.

Can you assist urgently? Thanks

Kind regards, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Senseisanna (talkcontribs) 23:43, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Senseisanna: The only page you have created so far is your user page at User:Senseisanna. A user page is not a Wikipedia article and will not be indexed by Google. The info on your user page is not particularly appropriate for a user page: see WP:USERPAGE. Is is also not appropriate as an article, most crucially because it does not establish notability: see WP:YFA.
