ART & COMMUNITY[edit]

During this edit-a-thon taking place on April 5th, 2021, we will be adding and updating articles for artists, activists, and organizers with a sustained involvement in cultural production, community building, and intersectional dialogs.

Who are we focusing on?[edit]

Artists, activists, and organizers with a sustained involvement in cultural production, community building, and intersectional dialogs. Although the additions and edits will be far from comprehensive, it is one step towards a more diverse archive. Art & Community aims to add diverse practitioners and communities to the wikipedia archive. New articles will be chosen through a series of discussions with students and organizer Jaret Vadera.

The Process: Step-by-Step[edit]

1. Create your account[edit]

Decide on a username

  1. Click on the blue link "Create Account" in the top right corner.
  2. Click on the blue link "Create One" in the sign in box.
  3. Fill out the information on the page (email is not necessary) and click the "Create Account" button.
  4. Your username will now appear in red in the top right corner.

2. Create your userpage[edit]

Creating a user page will be your first time editing in Wikipedia!

  1. Make sure you're signed in.
  2. Click on your user name, which is a red link, in the top right corner.
  3. Click the “Edit” tab (located between “Read” and “View History”) to make several edits to your userpage.
  4. Include as little or as much information about yourself as you would like. It's often a good idea to state your interests and what you'll be working on, including any declarations of possible conflicts of interest (for example, where you work, if you're comfortable sharing.)
  5. Tell edit-a-thon organizer your username so they can add it to the ART+COMMUNITY Meetup Page
  • The “Creating a userpage” document will walk you through the steps involved in setting up your userpage. your edits.

3. Create a draft in sandbox[edit]

A sandbox is a subpage of your userpage that can be used for drafting articles.

  1. When you are logged-in, look in the upper-right hand corner and you will see a link to your sandbox.
  2. When you click on this link, it will bring up the Edit box. You can type something in here and click Save, which will create your draft page. You can use this space for testing and practice.
  • These pages are not live articles, so they do not have to meet all of the Manual of Style requirements.

5. Read[edit]

It is important that you read about the Five Pillars of Wikipedia.

  1. Neutral Point of View Policy
  2. No Original Research Policy
  3. Verifiability Policy
  4. Notability Policy

6. Choose artist page to create or edit from the list above or feel free to suggest a page you would like to work on[edit]

7. Research / Write / Share with other participants[edit]

8. Tell edit-a-thon organizer when you are close to done so you can upload together[edit]

ART & COMMUNITY is part of an ongoing series of edit-a-thons originally developed by Uzma Rizvi and Jaret Vadera aimed at adding diverse practitioners and communities to the wikipedia archive. It was first hosted in the Social Science and Cultural Studies Department at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York
