About the event[edit]

This event will be an opportunity for staff to learn more about Wikipedia and the benefits of Wikipedia for science outreach, and to create new and improve existing content on Wikipedia pertaining to stem cells.

Most articles on Wikipedia relating to Stem Cells are semi-protected, meaning that anyone intending to take part must create their account 5 days in advance, and must make at least 10 edits before they will be able to edit those pages. Please see below for further information about making edits. More training will be provided on the day.

Programme[edit]

  • 13:00 - Housekeeping and Welcome from Dr. Cathy Southworth
  • 13:15 - Introduction to Wikipedia and editing training
  • 14:30 - Break, then research & editing.
  • 16:30 - Transferring from the Sandbox (draft space area) to the Wikipedia live space.
  • 17:30 - Close.

Full training will be provided.

How do I prepare?[edit]

Hit list of articles to be created or improved[edit]

Helpful updates could be as simple as: Making sure reference links are still appropriate and functional; Adding new inline citations/references; Adding a photo; Adding an infobox; Adding data to more fields in an existing infobox; Creating headings; Adding categories; etc.

The following is a small sample of topics to work on. Feel free to come up with your own ideas!

All are welcome to add names to the list which is intended to serve as a basis for creating new articles in this important but somewhat neglected sector on the English Wikipedia.

Articles on the history of genetics to be improved[edit]

Some articles on people who played a role in the history of genetics could be much improved, and these might be a good starting point for those unfamiliar to editing. They are listed below, with links to the Wikipedia pages and to some sources to get you started:

  • C.P. Blacker doesn't have an infobox. There's also more information to add about him here.
  • Malcolm Ferguson-Smith doesn't have an infobox, and his page is a little sparse. There's some relevant information and pictures here.
  • Hans Grüneberg's page is almost all bullet-points. Information and pictures can be found here.
  • Arthur Mourant's page is not particularly extensive at present. Relevant information/images are here.
  • Lionel Penrose's page is quite brief at present, though well referenced. Information on Penrose to use in building up the page is located here.
  • Guido Pontecorvo's page is mostly bullet-points and could be significantly extended using this profile.
  • Robert Russell Race has a page which only consists of about one paragraph. Ruth Sanger's is only marginally better. There is some information to use in improving their pages here.

Please note per WP:MEDRS: It is very important to use high quality secondary sources (such as review articles) published by reputable journals or major textbooks. Primary sources, even if pubmed indexed and peer reviewed will typically be removed.
