Talk about this project on WikiProject Christianity

The above article is currently being considered for deletion. Anyone should feel free to take part in the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mar Gregorios Orthodox Church Janakpuri. Thank you. John Carter (talk) 19:51, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Potential project activity

As it stands, the categorization of the articles in the Category:Christianity in India, and occasionally the text, doesn't help differentiate between the various entities within Indian Christianity, like the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, the Mar Thoma Church, and some others. Considering most if not all of these subjects are also within the scope of one of the "denominational" Christianity projects, it would probably be useful if the specific "allegiances" of the individual churches, individuals, etc., were included in the articles as well. Need a help for article assessment stats

We need a help on fixing the article assessment stats for the project. Only 266 of 530 articles in Category:Indian Christianity work group articles are shown in Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian Christianity/Assessment , even after last bot run. The unaccessed are not displayed and the importance categorization is also not Shown. Kindly help to fix this - Tinucherian (talk) 02:27, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Note the proposal at: Talk:Mangalorean Konkani -- SECisek (talk) 16:47, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

New nav box

Discussion moved to Template talk:Indian christianity

Henry Martyn

Henry Martyn has been nominated for GA. This is a first for the project - all articles on the new Nav Box should be targeted for GA and placed on the portal when they pass. -- SECisek (talk) 09:28, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Mother Teresa is already a GA ! - Tinucherian (talk) 02:46, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Add her to the portal as fetured content. -- SECisek (talk) 18:32, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Congrats SECisek , on working with Henry Martyn article to promote it to GA status ! Keep it up. Let us get more articles to GA and FA status - Tinucherian (talk) 12:03, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Ravi Zacharias article is GA now ! - Tinucherian (talk) 04:48, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Well Done. -- Secisek (talk) 06:14, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Addition of Category:Christianity in India to all prjt articles

I propose to add Category:Christianity in India for all this project articles. All articles with {{ChristianityWikiProject|indian-work-group=yes}} banner on the Talk pages should be added with the above category if not already present. Comments ? Is there a bot to do this automatically?? - Tinucherian (talk) 04:53, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Random content

Before the portal get's too much older, I propose we switch to the random rather than the archive display system. They are no longer passing archive portals as Featured Portals. They also require more up keep. What do you say? If you don't know what I am talking about, go see Portal:Anglicanism. -- Secisek (talk) 06:20, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

I got the point. But we will try to maintain as much as possible. But can we modify it to take from a select pool if there is no artcile for the month ? else , if available , take the article for the month. Comments ? - Tinucherian (talk) 06:45, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Not that I know of...we can slant to make a single article appear more often. This can be done with ease while we only a few GAs and FAs. I won't make any changes without agreement here. -- Secisek (talk) 07:45, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Is there any reason why you oppose the random portal? I did at first, but now see it is clearly a better option. -- Secisek (talk) 07:57, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
Please go ahead if your think that this is a better option. I was only thinking if v have a select a article every month, the member will try to improve the articles to get to the Portal. Anyways I have no objections - Tinucherian (talk) 05:03, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
Secondly , I want to make this portal to push for Featured Portal Status in future.. Will this random article selection be a hindrance ?? - Tinucherian (talk) 06:55, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

They still have to improve articles to get them to the portal...and yes, when I first nominated Anglicanism, it was rejected for not being a random portal. I had to redesign it. That was why I suggested this now. I we are agreed, I will make the changes. -- Secisek (talk) 09:07, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

I had just followed the steps of our parent Portal:Christianity which is also content per month. You may make the neccessary changes - Tinucherian (talk) 02:40, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Started the changes and I will finish them tomorrow. -- Secisek (talk) 04:17, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Fully switched over to random content. -- Secisek (talk) 03:39, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Indian Christianity

Not to throw a wrench in, here, but do you think that "Indian Christianity" is a bit misleading? I think that "Christianity in India" is more neutral and less nationalistic. I would seriously consider a renaming.Brian0324 (talk) 17:55, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

According to usage here at WP Indian "usually refers to the inhabitants" and customs of India. Its use here is neither POV nor "nationalistic", by which I assume you mean advancing "that nationality is the most important aspect of one's identity". The title of the project and the portal is fine as it is.
I would think the notion of a (European) Christianity in India would be less NPOV the the simple "Indian Christianity". I don't care, however, and will respect consensus. -- Secisek (talk) 04:24, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
In light of the navbox merger proposal for the "series on Protstant Missions in India" and this project's navbox, I will agree to what ever name is thought best for the project, portal, and navbox. This including the name proposed by [[User talk:Brian0324|talk] above, should a wider navbox be settled on. --Secisek (talk) 21:31, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Nav boxes

It seems that there are two parallel Nav Boxes in use. One for this project and another for the "series on Protestant missions in India". I propse a merger of the two be carried out under the more banner general banner of "Christianity in India". This will provide a full picture of the project's scope and prevent problems with groups like the Churches of North and South India, which identify as Catholic and Protestant and groups like the Mar Thoma who are reformed and Oriental Orthodox at the same time.

I ask this because an article that I spent a good time developing specificly for this project had the project Navbox replaced with the one for the series.

In any case, neither box should be used if it will cause large breaks in the formating. That was the whole purpose of setting up the portal. Larger navigation ability, smaller footprint on the article. Thoughts? -- Secisek (talk) 21:25, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Is there not some formal process for merging templates? There is no notice at either Template talk:Protestant missions to India or Template talk:Indian Christianity. How are those outside narrow confines of WikiProject Indian Christianity (WikiProject Christianity in India) to be informed of this discussion? Aramgar (talk) 22:10, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
It was mentioned in the edit summary, which you clearly saw because you then went to the talk page and told us that you were going to ignore the edit summary that asked you discuss the changes here. -- Secisek (talk) 00:28, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Discussion about the content of Henry Martyn needs to be conducted at Talk:Henry Martyn. An edit summary is not sufficient notice for the wider community. Aramgar (talk) 00:36, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
This does not involve the content of one article, but the formating of many. This is not a content dispute. This is not (yet) a dispute at all. As for the edit summary not being "sufficient notice" you could have spread the word yourself, since you have been watching the "discussion unfolding over the last few days". Again, this is part of an on-going, open discussion between a group of editors who are working together to improve the focus and presentation of certain christianity-related articles. This is not a content dispute or even a dispute at all, it is a work in progress. Please be constructive. -- Secisek (talk) 02:29, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
I have placed a comment on which template is appropriate for the article Henry Martyn at the affiliated talkpage (here). I would happily comment on any proposed template merge in the appropriate place, provided the discussion is conducted in a transparent fashion. Aramgar (talk) 03:33, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

I suspect discussion will result in one template, built by consensus, for all main project articles. Feel free to particpate here. -- Secisek (talk) 05:07, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

I am reserved about a merger of the two templates at this point. My main concern is the title and icon/flag that suggest a bit of a monolithic form of "Indian Christianity" that simply does not exist. At this point please add your comments to my essential debate below and then, once we agree on a name, we can discuss the purpose of template(s).Thanks!Brian0324 (talk) 13:50, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Name of Project & Portal & Template issues

I raised some issues on the various talk pages for the Portal and the Template & maybe it is just best to bring up everything in one place, here. I have a real concern that "Indian Christianity" is not the best choice for a title of things. The same would be true of "American Christianity" - one might ask, "Just what is American Christianity?" Too, if the goal is to make one Wikiproject and Template to cover such a broad spectrum of theology and ethnicity - a better title would be "Christianity in India". I wrestled with this question when I created the Portal:Christianity in China, and the reason that I did not think that it should be called "Chinese Christianity" is that within China, there are those who do not identify with the Han culture, such as the Lisu, but call themselves Christian all the same. They may be in fact citizens of the People's Republic, but they are not "Chinese". I am not an expert on India, but I am guessing that there are some similar issues, here. Comments?Brian0324 (talk) 21:48, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

I think we can reach an agreement in short order, it is the other active members of the project who need to sound off. Give 'em a day or two. -- Secisek (talk) 19:29, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
I have come to this discussion through my interest in the articles Prester John and Henry Martyn and have lurked here with varying degrees of interest since the imposition of the Template:Indian Christianity on these two articles in early March. User:Brian0324's criticism of the image at the top of the template (here) and the elaboration of his views at the top of this thread articulated well my own concerns about the template, while leading me to a fuller understanding of the problems with the portal itself.
Christians within the borders of the modern state of India are a diverse lot. The template, and perhaps the project as well, attempt to impose a unity where no natural unity seems to exist. The Christian churches present in India frequently come from a variety of supranational traditions: Roman Catholicism, Northern European Protestantism, Orthodoxy, Syriac Christianity, et cetera. These are more appropriately treated in the larger context of their respective traditions. This said, I understand the wish to establish order and applaud a group of editors who have focused their efforts on improving articles related to the varieties of Christianity present in India.
I would support the name change proposed by Brian0234 from "Indian Christianity" to "Christianity in India." My chief concern remains the unwieldy template affixed to the many articles covered under the broad rubric of Christianity in India. I understand that the goal of the template is to increase access to a range of India-related articles; perhaps the template does this, but the loss in detail, particularly in the ease of access to the Protestant missionaries that Template talk:Protestant missions to India provides, is unacceptable. Even if the Protestants were folded into the former template, they would be obscured under a link. I know that when I first came to Henry Martyn, I clicked-through the names on the template in order to establish him in some sort of context. This sort of experience would be far more difficult if the templates were merged.
By way of compromise, I would suggest that if the members of the wikiproject wish to include a template, they consider using the less obtrusive footer-style navigation box (example). Aramgar (talk) 20:23, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Both templates are associated with Christianity wikiproject. As for a footer, this has already been proposed by me - see here. Throughout all the Cristianity projects, the move is away from the clumsy nav boxs and to the less obtrusive footers.
If a combination of the two Indian nav boxs leads to a large, but useful collection of links, a footer would be the way to go. As it stands, it is custom to have a nav box that connects the key figures and key topics of a project. The more general of the two ends up on the page in the event of a conflict. If the Christianity series and Calvinsim series both wanted to link to Jesus as a key article, clearly Christianity would get the nod. I don't think that is going to be the case here, as we have been moving away from the POV Protestant v. Catholic presentations of Christianity in Asia and to a more NPOV geographic presentation. -- Secisek (talk) 21:46, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
I do not wish to sound obtuse, but I do not follow the statement you have made about priority in template usage. Would you please explain, perhaps citing some sort of policy or a previous discussion where this was elaborated? As for "Protestant" and "Catholic," they are descriptive terms of long standing and do not lose their validity as such at the borders of Asia. Regards, Aramgar (talk) 02:59, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
I see what you are getting at. Indian Christianity sounds more or less like Roman Catholicism or Syrian Orthodox. Christianity in India seems to be a good option, but like I once mentioned User:Tinucherian (who created this project page) here, to widen the prospect of this project into the whole of Indian subcontinent. Afterall, to go by the St Thomas legend, the history of Christianity in India covers as far as Afghanistan with Gondophares. Not to mention that Sri Lankan Christians' close ties with South Indian Christians (especially TN and Kerala) with one of the their most revered saint being an Indian. Cheers Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 02:54, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

I would agree with with a wider scope. User:Tinucherian? How do you feel about names, graphics and templates? Christianity in South Asia, anyone?-- Secisek (talk) 03:08, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Logo
I reckon the logo with the map (of South Asia) with a cross in it would be a good idea, similar to what was proposed here.
Template
I guess this is more tricky than the issue on logo. The Protestant missions to India Template lists quite a lot specifically about Protestanism in India, including the works, people, agencies, pivotal events and notable Indian Protestants. This I fear, when merged would be approprite and fare to include such details on every single Church listed in the Indian Christianity Template. This will be super huge template or at the least with too many collapsibles. The point of easy navigation will be lost, or atleast that is what I can think right now. I reckon that Protestant missions to India should be linked to the Indian Christianity Template and the Protestant missionary template converted to a footer. This will give freedom for non-Protestant articles to have their own footer that doesn't get on the way. What do you guys think? Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 04:17, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

I think that may be one way to go. I would like to see something, footer or nav box, that is inclusive. I think splitting the project into Catholic and Protestant camps is the wrong way to go - it also ignores the presence in the sub-continent of Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Assyrian traditions - all of which predate Catholic or Protestant missions by 1000+ years. Spliting along denominational lines runs counter to the mission statement of the project which states:

A template or footer that shows all the diversity of Christianity in Indian seems to be the least POV way to go about it. I have been through much with templates at the parent project and I know sectarian templates raise many questions. One good one is will there be a seperate template for Mormanism in India, or will they be included on the Protestant template? Just something to ponder. I also was one of the chief supporters of the phase out of the Christianity navbox in favor of the footer and/or portal links. --Secisek (talk) 05:17, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

I strongly oppose. The intention of a wikiproject is to improve articles on a particular subject by a group of interested Wikipedians. We have created this project for only the coverge of Christianity in India ONLY and this is a work force of both Christianity Workproject AND India Wikiproject. Indian Christianity means all the christian traditions and history from the arrival of St.Thomas in India in 52 AD till the present century. It will unbiasedly include ALL traditions and denominations in India. As a group, we do not prefer any particular tradition or denominination of Christianity, but see to it that all Christian traditions in India are fairly and accurately represented.
I dont understand what is the big issue with the name Indian Christianity. It is a simplied name and it means Christianity in India only. Btw doesnt Indian history means History of India ?? It is just similar to Eastern Christianity, Syriac Christianity... etc.
If anybody wants to have and maintain another wikiproject on Christianity in Indian subcontinent , they are very well free to do so . Similarly you cannot prevent a wikiproject on India by saying that we need only an India sub-continent wikiproject.
Besides Indian Christianity is more of a workforce to Christianity Workproject AND India Wikiproject , than a wikiproject by itself. - Tinucherian (talk) 05:34, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

You raise a good point, I apologise, I often forget that this is a work group of Wikiproject India. So scratch the subcontinent idea. Do you have an opinion on Christianity in India as the proposed rename? -- Secisek (talk) 05:40, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Considering that there is no issue in the case of Indian Christianity as Brian0324 said regarding Chinese Christianity , I dont really feel there is any need for the change of name. Besides considering all the overhead of changes in lots of pages , templetes , cats etc, I dont think it is worth the effort. But if there is a Consensus among a good number of project members, I am still ok ! Are we going to change Eastern Christianity to Christianity in Eastern world , Syriac Christianity to Christianity in Syria etc ? - Tinucherian (talk) 06:38, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
I understand your stance and the reason behind it for the South Asian idea. Although I agree with it, there needs to be something done about the much neglected Christian history of other parts of the subcontinent. Probably wait for others to express their views on it. As far as Eastern Christianity is pretty different to the Christianity in the Eastern world. Same as Indian religions doesn't mean the same as Religion in India, where the latter includes Christianity but not the former. It originates, if am right from what we call as the Great Schism. Moving on, what is your opinion on the logo? Even if we are staying on with India alone, do you think we should stick on to the tricolor flag or to the map? ->Wiki San Roze
I am OK with the map than the tricolor ! One main reason , some people might find it disrespectful to Indian flag , replacing the Ashoka Chakra with a cross. Besides Indian flag is just a few centuries old while Christianity in Indian region dates back to 52 AD. For South Asia christianity , we may create a new workgroup(s) within WP:X , if there are enough interested people - Tinucherian (talk) 07:05, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

I will make the changes on the logo then. Well done everybody! -- Secisek (talk) 07:12, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Name

Very good. New image by consensus. Focus stays on just India, at least for now. Before moving on, we should settle the matter of the name. I am fine with either Indian Christianity or Christianity in India. I don't think it would require that much work to change it as the portal and project pages would not be renamed, just the titles on them. What does everyone think? -- Secisek (talk) 07:24, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

I suggest we may change the name of Portal to Christianity in India . Personally I believe , changing the name of workgroup/prjt Indian Christianity is not worth it. - Tinucherian (talk) 07:43, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

If nobody objects or has anything to add, I will make the changes soon. -- Secisek (talk) 19:12, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

If the Portal and Template are renamed to Christianity in India that is an improesvement enough.Brian0324 (talk) 19:15, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Christianity in India will be the names of the lock, stock, and barrel going forward. All instance wont be changed over night and the page at the portal and the project can't be moved without massive amounts of work. The names however will be changed going forward. -- Secisek (talk) 20:31, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Brian, Secisek,
On second thoughts, I was thinking what is the big issue in renaming the prjt (other than massive work), if we are going to rename the portal and templates also. May be this issue may be raised in future again , when the efforts for change will b more tough. Ok. I support the renames .Let us divide the work. I will work on the project restructure. Secisek , can you work on templates and the Portal ? - Tinucherian (talk) 03:05, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

I would advise againstmoving the physical pages of the project and the portal as so many of them are wired to one another. Changing the names on all the headers and links should accomplish what we are out for. Pipe the links with new name as in: [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian Christianity|WikiProject Christianity in India]] -- Secisek (talk) 03:19, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Upon discussion and consensus ( see here) , The following changes and decisions were taken w.r.t to Indian Christianity workgroup :-

  • The scope of workgroup will be limited to Indian region only for now.
  • The workgroup will be renamed to Christianity in India instead of Indian Christianity.
  • The changes will effect the project pages, Portal and the templates.
  • The templetes will be replaced by a Indian map instead of Tricolor flag picture.

This is FYI - Tinucherian (talk) 04:41, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

New portal link

{{Ciiportal}} makes: {{portal-inline|Christianity in India}}

Feel free to put this on every article in the category. It is already transcluded into the navbox, so it is on the key articles already. -- Secisek (talk) 07:38, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Good. Good :) - Tinucherian (talk) 09:03, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

This is really good. I suggest to remove the current infobox in the articles and use this box in every article involving Indian Christianity. Instead of the current infobox the horizontal footer with collapsable option need to be included in the major articles. The foccus should be on the article not on the infobox. ThanksTarijanel (talk) 22:33, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Coordinators election

We are now holding elections for various individuals to help coordinate the various Christianity projects. For what it's worth, as the "instigator" of the proposed coordinators, the purpose of having them is not to try to impose any sort of "discipline" on the various projects relating to Christianity, but just to ensure that things like assessment, peer review, portal maintainance, and other similar directly project-related functions get peformed for all the various projects relating to Christianity. If there are any individuals with this project who are already doing such activities for the project, and who want to take on the role more formally, I think nominations are being held open until the end of the elections themselves. And, for the purposes of this election, any member in good standing of any of the Christianity projects can either be nominated or express their votes at Wikipedia:WikiProject Christianity/Coordinators/Election 1. Thank you for your attention. John Carter (talk) 00:28, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Saint Thomas Christians

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Thomas_Christians is defintly a prime article concerend with Chrisitanity in India. I have added couple of sections and reformatted the article to give a relaistic and accurate picture. It need formatting, language corrections and better continunity. Can anyone with good understading on subject look at this and correct the article.Tarijanel (talk) 22:49, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Some suggestions,

1] More pictures from each denominations 2] Flow, language corrections and forematting.

Tarijanel (talk) 22:51, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

An user Avineshjose proposed a merger of Indian (Malankara) Orthodox Church and Malankara Church. Malankara Church is the original church established by St. Thomas in India. It was undivided until 15th century - later it become different denominations Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church, Malankara Catholic Syrian Church, Syro-Malabar Catholic Church etc ..during the course of history. The user has his personal intentions on this request for this merger ( explained in the talk page) . To be fair to him , I request a third party and unbiased opinion on this issue , on the article Talk page -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 05:06, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Indian Christianity work group

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! I tried adding a section regarding the violence to the page on Orissa, but I had a strong response from at least two editors that it was 'recentism'. I'm not sure a 10 year old issue of ongoing violence like this is all that recent. I just think it would be good to mention it and reference the main article on the violence! Third opinions would be helpful. Sandwich Eater (talk) 02:16, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Honorifics

As per WP:MOS, honorifics are universally not allowed in any Wikipedia article. Please help by removing or renaming articles when encountered containing the honorific "Moran Mar" (always before the name like all honorifics). I'm currently allowing or ignoring "Mar" or "Mor" by itself or part of a name. Catholicos, is of course, allowed. It is like "patriarch" or "archbishop" and is a title, not an honorific. Thanks.
